Pathways to and within Higher Education for youths of immigrant backgrounds

2019

International audience; This presentation looks first at the access to higher education of immigrant youths and particularly through which tracks in secondary education. It then shows the choice of type of institution and field of study (vertical and horizontal differentiation) made by these youths once in higher education, as well as to what extent they succeed in obtaining a higher education diploma. The presentation focuses on comparative research across European countries as well as outside Europe (e.g. Canada), taking into account country contexts and the organization of the educational systems both in secondary and higher education. Moreover, differences between country of origin, gen…

The Vocationalisation of University Programmes in France: its Consequences for Employability and Mobility

2011

France has a multi-track higher education system which includes four key components: Grandes Ecoles, short vocational training tracks, specialised higher education institutions (in social work, healthcare and the arts), and universities. Access to higher education is traditionally defined by the contrast between universities (which enrol all holders of the baccalaureat without any selection process) and the extremely selective Grandes Ecoles. The other tertiary courses are not directly accessible to all baccalaureat holders who wish to enrol because the number of study places is limited; applications to these tracks involve a selection process (based on educational records or a competitive …

Opening the gates or coping with the flow? Governing access to higher education in Northern and Central Europe

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Higher Education. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10734-014-9830-1 Access to higher education has become a key policy issue in most European countries in since the last half of the last century. We trace the historical development of the ways in which governments in two countries within the region, Norway and Poland, have attempted to steer developments. Three access waves or phases are identified and contextualized, by illuminating dominant policy logics and tensions. Our analysis suggests that “coping with the flow” reflects a continuous attempt to instrumentalize higher education and make it serve different …

Korkeakouludiplomi : kokeiluhankkeen seuranta- ja arviointitutkimuksen väliraportti

2015

Graduate employment and the returns to higher education in Africa

2013

http://cemapre.iseg.utl.pt/educonf/2e3/files/submissions_to_web/Barounia%20Mahdi_Broeckeb%20%20Stijn.docx; In this paper, we estimate the return to higher education for 12 African countries using recent data and a variety of methods. Importantly, one of our methods adjusts for the effect of higher education on the rate of joblessness, which is substantial in most African countries, and particularly for women. Our results confirm that Mincerian coefficients cannot be interpreted as a true rate of return, and that the latter (even after taking into account the employment effect) is considerably lower than what has previously been suggested in the literature (less than half). For Sub-Saharan A…

IMPLICIT MESH DISCONTINUOUS GALERKIN FOR VARIABLE ANGLE TOW MULTILAYERED PLATES

2018

This works presents a novel computational scheme for variable angle tow (VAT) multilayered plates [1]. The characteristic features of the proposed scheme are the combined use of a discontinuous Galerkin (dG) formulation and an implicitly defined mesh. The formulation is based on the principle of virtual displacements (PVD) and the Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) assumption for the mechanical behavior of the VAT plates [2]. The problem is first placed within the dG framework by suitably introducing an auxiliary variable and by rewriting the set of equations governing ESL VAT plates as a firstorder system of differential equations. Following Arnold et al.[3] and by introducing suitably defined …

Analysis of attitudes towards disability among university students: a focus on the theory of reasoned action

2011

THE GEOGRAPHY OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN LATVIA’S HIGHER EDUCATION: PREROGATIVE OR ‘SECOND CHANCE’

2020

This paper links geographies of in-flow international students to the higher education system in Latvia and destination country choice rationales. Latvia welcomes international students from diverse geographies. Besides specific sourcing countries like Germany and India, there are also considerably constant and stable flows from former Soviet countries. International students are both an essential source of revenue for higher education institutions and to some extent, replacement of decrease of local students. This study adopts a mixed-method approach and based on the analysis of official statistical data and survey data. The survey reveals views on decision-making process and motives of cu…
