Health care spending structures in Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia over the years as compared to other EU countries

2018

Abstract After joining the European Union in 2004, the post-communist countries have dramatically changed their structure of expenditure for medical services. The cause of this is legislative and ownership changes in the new economy. The study analyzed the expenditure on medical services in the European Union with a special focus on Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The European Union countries were divided into clusters using different methods, that is, Ward’s, Two Step and Centroid Clustering. In the paper, the structure and changes in health expenses were presented according to the types of expenditures over the years 2004-2015. Countries were assigned to clusters based on three var…

Himera. Casa VI5: un tentativo di analisi funzionale

2013

The Author proposes, while emphasizing the difficulty of reinterpreting an old excavation, a functional analysis of a Himerean house which has been excavated in 1972. Noting that at Himera there is not a typical house plan, he begins with the description of structures and materials from House VI 5 and proposes a sociological and economical interpretation of their domestic use. House VI 5 is one of the largest houses in the city in the fifth century B.C. consisting of three parts (one for storage, a public place, and a private one) and attests that Himereans knew and used new domestic patterns from metropolitan Greece, in particular in Athens, and were actively involved in spreading cultural…

Bartomeu de Tresbens, metge i astròleg de Pere el Cerimomiós : aproximació biogràfica i diplomatari

2019

Mind the Gap: The Big House in Cinematic Representations of the Anglo-Irish War

2018

It goes without saying that the Big House was intended to be a symbol: as more than one critic has remarked, these houses really were only “big” in comparison to the poverty of the lesser structures that surrounded them. They were to be a bastion for British and Anglo-Irish culture and a center for social and administrative interactions. In this sense, they straddled the gap between the towns of Dublin and London, whence their power came, and the villages to whom they administered: it is no coincidence that these garrisons of British power bore the brunt of Republican anger during the Troubles of 1919-1921. Examining two of the rare films to focus on the War of Independence from the perspec…

El precio de ser itinerante. Viajes, acompañamiento y espacios cortesanos de la reina Leonor de Sicilia (r. 1349-1375)

2021

This article is an attempt to detail which logistical, economic and human implications had the itinerancy of the medieval monarchy. For this reason, the paper focuses on the characteristics of the itinerancy of Eleanor of Sicily, third wife of Pedro the Ceremonious and queen of the Crown of Aragon between 1349 and 1375. Through the analysis of her documentation, from chancery and treasury resources, it has been possible to establish an itinerary of the queen for three years, from 1354 to 1357. The analysis of this itinerary allows us to see the confluence of the royal couple entourages and the consequences of the beginning of the Dos Pedros war. At the same time, the paper focuses on the pe…

EX-ANTE AND EX-POST MEASUREMENT OF EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY IN HEALTH: A NORMATIVE DECOMPOSITION

2013

This paper proposes and discusses two different approaches to the definition of inequality in health: the ex-ante and the ex-post approach. It proposes strategies for measuring inequality of opportunity in health based on the path-independent Atkinson equality index. The proposed methodology is illustrated using data from the British Household Panel Survey; the results suggest that in the period 2000–2005, at least one-third of the observed health equalities in the UK were equalities of opportunity. NEIGHBORHOOD EFFECTS IN SPATIAL HOUSING VALUE MODELS. THE CASE OF THE METROPOLITAN AREA OF PARIS (1999)

2009

In hedonic housing models, the spatial dimension of housing values are traditionally processed by the impact of neighborhood variables and accessibility variables. In this paper we show that spatial effects might remain once neighborhood effects and accessibility have been controlled for. We notably stress on three sides of neighborhood effects: social capital, social status and social externalities and consider the accessibility to the primary economic center as describing the urban spatial trend. Using spatial econometrics specifications of the hedonic equation, we estimate whether spatial effects impact the housing values. Our empirical case concerns the Metropolitan Area (MA) of Paris i…

Spatial effects of urban public policies on housing values

2009

International audience; Problems of spatial segregation have often stressed on the social status and social capital of a neighbourhood as main driving forces behind housing price formation. In this paper, it is assumed that spatial effects are additional variables worth considering since the impact of urban policies such as social housing policies and urban regeneration policies may permeate outside the areas where they are implemented. Our case study is of the urban area of Dijon (France), where these two types of urban policies have been implemented in the last three decades. Spatial effects are introduced in the hedonic model and a spatial error model is estimated, revealing a positive a…
