Probabilistic and preferential sampling approaches offer integrated perspectives of Italian forest diversity

2023

Aim: Assessing the performances of different sampling approaches for documenting community diversity may help to identify optimal sampling efforts and strategies, and to enhance conservation and monitoring planning. Here, we used two data sets based on probabilistic and preferential sampling schemes of Italian forest vegetation to analyze the multifaceted performances of the two approaches across three major forest types at a large scale. Location: Italy. Methods: We pooled 804 probabilistic and 16,259 preferential forest plots as samples of vascular plant diversity across the country. We balanced the two data sets in terms of sizes, plot size, geographical position, and vegetation types. F…

SOME CONSIDERATIONS ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN UNIVERSITY STRATEGIES AND FINANCIAL INDICATORS

2010

A very important role in establishment and foundation the activities of a university is strategies and policies developed by management authorities. Through this article we identify the relationship between the components of university strategy and financial indicators, taking into account that financial projections are those that can affirm or overturn the objectives. In this respect, the article is structured in such a way that could provide answer to questions like: What kind of university strategy must be adopted to insure academic success? What is the premises development strategy, as requirements for success in university management? What financial indicators can influence the compone…

Hints of latent drivers investigating university student performance

2018

Job market, nowadays, asks for higher and higher skills and competences. Therefore, also the measurement and assessment of the university students performance are crucial issues for policy makers. Although the scientific literature provides several papers investigating the main determinants of university student performance, often results are very different, and they seem to hold just in very specific contexts. This paper aims to contribute to the international literature, focusing on the role of student specific characteristics, supporting the idea that unobservable variables (such as motivation, aptitudes or abilities) should be more investigated.

The aggregation of sustainability performance measuring at company level : a case study

2015

Industrial companies face constant scrutiny about their sustainability performance development and comprehensive sustainability performance measuring is demanded from them. Companies are measuring their sustainability performance with various and multitude indicators, but it is difficult to look into the overall sustainability performance of companies based on plentiful and variable sustainability measures. There is no universally accepted method to measure the overall sustainability performance of a company, though tools for this purpose are developed. This qualitative case study research aims to shed light on whether the sustainability indicators of a case company could be aggregated in a…

Forecasting pollutant emission of the urban vehicular running fleet by means of synthetic indicators

2003

The simple method here presented, devoted to the evaluation of the environmental performances of transportation systems, is mainly referred to the pollutant emission factors released within the "COPERT III” approach. The method is here adopted for building up a synthetic indicator of the whole pollutant emissions from the transportation sector in a given urban area. The indicator can be utilised in the aim of comparing the environmental effects of different transportation policies: the introducing of modal changes in the transportation demand from private cars to public vehicles, for examples, could be suitably analysed. Apart the knowledge of the proper pollutant emission factors, the meth…

Applying a new synthetic environmental indicator to urban transportation scenario

2002

Through this work will be presented a suitably modified version of a simple model devoted to the evaluation of pollutant matters released in urban contexts by the transportation sector. The method, essentially referring to the pollutant emission factors provided within the European "COPERT III" approach, only requires the knowledge of data concerning the running car fleet on the analysed site. The methodology is here utilised for comparing environmental and energy effects of different transportation policies to be adopted in a given urban area. By imposing modal changes to the transportation demand and, consequently, by re-allocating people from cars to public means, the effects on the rele…

Longitudinal and cross-sectional associations of adherence to 24-hour movement guidelines with cardiometabolic risk

2022

This study aimed to examine 1) adherence to 24-hour movement guidelines over a 2-year follow-up in children aged 6-8 years and 2) association of this adherence with cardiometabolic risk factors. Physical activity and sleep were assessed by a monitor combining heart rate and accelerometry measurements. Screen time was reported by the parents. Body fat percentage, waist circumference, blood glucose, serum insulin, plasma lipids and blood pressure were assessed, and a cardiometabolic risk score was calculated using z-scores. Children were classified as meeting the guidelines if they had on average ≥60min/day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity during the valid days; ≤120min/day of screen…
