Morphea after silicone gel breast implantation for cosmetic reasons in an HLA-B8,DR3-positive woman

We describe an HLA-B8, DR3-positive patient with localized morphea after silicone gel breast implantation for cosmetic reasons. We believe that this case suggests that a genetic background, i.e. HLA-B8, DR3 haplotype, is involved in the autoimmune response to silicone.

Reactivation of aerobic granular sludge for the treatment of industrial shipboard slop wastewater: Effects of long-term storage on granules structure…

Abstract This work reports on reactivation of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) for the treatment of industrial recalcitrant wastewater (slop wastewater) characterized by high salinity and hydrocarbons. AGS were reactivated in two reactors, R1 and R2, to treat industrial slop wastewater after a long-term storage for 12-months at 4 °C. In R1, salt-adapted mature aerobic granules were previously subjected to a step-wise increase of hydrocarbons, whereas in R2 aerobic granules were previously cultivated in presence of salinity and hydrocarbons. High-pressure processing (HPP) has emerged over the last 2 decades as a good alternative to traditional thermal treatment for food safety and shelf-life extension, supplying foods with similar characteristics to those of fresh products. The effect of agglomeration economies and geography on the survival of accommodation businesses in Sicily

The study explores the geographical pattern of the accommodation industry in the Italian insular region of Sicily, focusing on the determinants of the risk of market exit. We adopt a standard framework of business survival analysis where agglomeration economies play an important role. We then extend the analysis by considering the role of geography to explore whether the risk of market exit depends on nearness to desirable amenities. The geography is here measured by the distance from the coast and the altitude of the place where the firm is located. Formation of supramolecular aggregates by hydrogen bonding based on bispyrimidine and bisbarbituric acid

Hydrogen bonds between bispyrimidine and bisbarbituric acid in equal molar ratio can lead to the formation of supramolecular aggregates. This is established by TEM, IR and DSC measurements. Additionally, WAXS pattern showed that the aggregate is of laminar structure. Both the hydrolysis of this system and termination of the aggregate's growth were studied.

Effect of Stiffness on the Micellization Behavior of Model H4T4 Surfactant Chains

The micellization behavior of a series of model surfactants, all with four head and tail groups (H4T4) but with different degrees of chain stiffness, was studied using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations on a cubic lattice. The critical micelle concentration, micellar size, and thermodynamics of micellization were examined. In all cases investigated, the critical micelle concentration was found to increase with increasing temperature as observed for nonionic surfactants in apolar or slightly polar solvents. RGD-mimic polyamidoamine-montmorillonite composites with tunable stiffness as scaffolds for bone tissue-engineering applications

This paper reports on the development of montmorillonite (MMT)-reinforced hydrogels, based on a peptidomimetic polyamidoamine carrying guanidine pendants (AGMA1), as substrates for the osteo-induction of osteoblast precursor cells.
