Foreign language teaching within special needs education: learning from Europe-wide experience

2005

In this article, Anne Stevens and David Marsh focus on the main aspects of the argument and discussion raised in the recently published European Commission (2005) report on the teaching and learning of languages in the context of special educational needs. They explore the avenues of possible action that should follow if the issues raised in the report are to be effectively addressed.

Temperature dependence of the rate constant of hydrogen isotope interactions with a lithium capillary-porous system under reactor irradiation

2013

Abstract Experiments with a sample of a lithium capillary-porous system (CPS) were performed at the reactor IVG-1.M of the Institute of Atomic Energy NNC RK to study the effects of neutron irradiation on the parameters of hydrogen isotope interactions with a lithium CPS. The absorption technique was used during the experiments, and this technique allowed the temperature dependences of the hydrogen isotope interaction rate constants with the lithium CPS to be obtained under various reactor powers. The obtained dependencies were used to determine the main interaction parameters: the activation energies and the pre-exponents of the Arrhenius dependence of the hydrogen interaction rate constant…

Cities' Identity Through Architecture and Art

2018

Intended to be a guide for academics, scholars, and interested leaders, this book was designed to critically assess issues related to architectural identity, the city as a scene, the city as an organism, the city as a subject, and the planning or rather approaching of one. A pressing issue for many researchers in the field, the book discusses the negative repercussions resulting from globalization. Studies have indicated that globalization, despite all the positive effects, has resulted in a loss of identity within a city. As a city develops over time, its identity is evolving as well and may even be lost due to rapid and constant changes it is subjected to. Discussed as well are examples a…

Determinants and efficiency of Pakistan's chemical products' exports: An application of stochastic frontier gravity model.

2019

The estimation of efficiency of industry-specific exports is very important to find exports' gap and to frame exports promotion policy for targeted industry. This study attempts to investigate the main determinants of chemical products' exports of Pakistan with 62 trading partners by applying Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) on an augmented gravity model for a period 1995-2015. The results corroborate that chemical products' exports follow gravity patterns. This study finds a negative and significant impact of import tariff on exports of chemical products while the positive impact of devaluation has been observed. Further, the estimations also take into account the impact of Preferential …

Downstream Services for Rice Crop Monitoring in Europe: From Regional to Local Scale

2017

The ERMES agromonitoring system for rice cultivations integrates EO data at different resolutions, crop models, and user-provided in situ data in a unified system, which drives two operational downstream services for rice monitoring. The first is aimed at providing information concerning the behavior of the current season at regional/rice district scale, while the second is dedicated to provide farmers with field-scale data useful to support more efficient and environmentally friendly crop practices. In this contribution, we describe the main characteristics of the system, in terms of overall architecture, technological solutions adopted, characteristics of the developed products, and funct…

Invasive Observation by Atomic Force Microscope of a Langmuir-Blodgett Monolayer of Gramicidin

2002

The properties of gramicidin, a linear antibiotic polypeptide of 15 amino acids, have been studied at the air-water interface. Analysis of the pressure-area isotherm is not able to conclude about the conformational behavior of gramicidin in the monolayer. Langmuir-Blodgett deposition of gramicidin layers onto a mica substrate has been developed for atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations. At high pressure of deposition, the gramicidin monolayer is composed of dimers perpendicular to the surface. The possibility of removing the half upper part of this dimer monolayer with the AFM tip is more in favor of a structure of single-stranded helical dimers.

Iron deposition on TiO2(110): effect of the surface stoichiometry and roughness

1999

Abstract Characterizations of ultra-thin iron films deposited on TiO 2 (110) surfaces with different stoichiometries, roughnesses and crystallinities have been carried out by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). For a high initial roughness of the substrate, a 2D growth mode is observed up to three monolayers. But, if the initial roughness is low, clusters grow on the TiO 2 surface. Whatever the initial surface stoichiometry, electronic exchanges occur between titanium and iron leading to a reduction of titanium and an oxidation of iron. This interaction between iron and titanium dioxide surface takes place only at the interface between the metal and…

Fabrication of layered nanostructures by successive electron beam induced deposition with two precursors: protective capping of metallic iron structu…

2011

We report on the stepwise generation of layered nanostructures via electron beam induced deposition (EBID) using organometallic precursor molecules in ultra-high vacuum (UHV). In a first step a metallic iron line structure was produced using iron pentacarbonyl; in a second step this nanostructure was then locally capped with a 2-3 nm thin titanium oxide-containing film fabricated from titanium tetraisopropoxide. The chemical composition of the deposited layers was analyzed by spatially resolved Auger electron spectroscopy. With spatially resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Fe L₃ edge, it was demonstrated that the thin capping layer prevents the iron structure from oxidation upon e…

To be or not to be a brand: the author name

2019

International audience; The aim of this research is to determine whether or not the author name is of the same nature as a brand namein readers’ eyes, in order to understand whether there is a limit, a boundto the scope of the branding concept. The case of the literary fiction writer is especially interesting since literature is on the boundary between commerce and the arts, and accordingly on the boundary of the profane and the sacred, given the sacralization process from which the arts have benefited since the sixteenth century. To this end, aqualitative studywas conductedamong 18 regular readersin France. The findings of the studys how that, although the author name (the signature) plays…
