Nutritional prevention of cognitive decline and dementia.

2018

Cognitive impairment results from a complex interplay of many factors. The most important independent predictor of cognitive decline is age but other contributing factors include demographic, genetic, socio-economic, and environmental parameters, including nutrition. The number of persons with cognitive decline and dementia will increase in the next decades in parallel with aging of the world population. Effective pharmaceutical treatments for age-related cognitive decline are lacking, emphasizing the importance of prevention strategies. There is extensive evidence supporting a relationship between diet and cognitive functions. Thus, nutritional approaches to prevent or slow cognitive decli…

Effects of Physical Exercise on Inflammatory Markers of Atherosclerosis

2011

It is well established that physically fit individuals have a reduced risk of developing CVD (cardiovascular disease) and other age-related chronic disorders. Regular exercise is an established therapeutic intervention with an enormous range of benefits. Chronic low-grade systemic inflammation may be involved in atherosclerosis, diabetes and in pathogenesis of several chronic pathological conditions; recent findings confirm that physical activity induces an increase in the systemic levels of a number of cytokines and chemokines with anti-inflammatory properties. The possibility that regular physical exercise exerts anti-inflammation activity, being the interaction between contracting muscle…

Antiaging Medicine

2009

• The factors best demonstrated to delay aging are fruit and vegetables, exercise, not smoking, drinking one or two glasses of alcohol daily, and fish consumption. • Vitamin D replacement, in persons with low 25[OH] vitamin D levels, decreases hip fractures, improves muscle strength, enhances function, and decreases mortality. • Antiaging medicine has been hijacked by charlatans who promote unproven or dangerous remedies to a naïve aging public. • Too often animal studies that produce longevity are directly applied to humans before appropriate clinical trials have been carried out. • There is no evidence that hormones or megadoses of vitamins prolong life. • Numerous products of varying qua…

An Elevated Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio Increases the Risk of Cardiovascular Events and of Renal Function Decline in Hypertensive Patients with CKD

2021

Introduction: Many epidemiological studies have shown that low-grade chronic inflammation, estimated through the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), is linked to traditional and non-traditional cardiovascular (CV) risk factors. Aim: The aim of our study was to investigate the potential prognostic role of NLR regarding the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the development of CV events in a cohort of renal and hypertensive patients. Methods: In this retrospective observational study, 403 patients consecutively attending our Nephrology and Hypertension clinics were included. At the baseline observation and control visits in all patients, in addition to the clinical-anamnestic eval…

Pro-inflammatory CX3CR1+ CD59+ TL1A+ IL-23+ monocytes are expanded in patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis and modulate ILC3 immune functions

2018

Gut derived ILC3 have been demonstrated to participate in AS pathogenesis. CX3CR1+ mononuclear phagocytes (MNP) have been demonstrated to modulate ILC3 function in the gut. The aim of this study was to study the role of pro-inflammatory CX3CR1+ CD59+ MNP in modulating ILC3 function in AS patients.

INFIAMMAZIONE NEURO-MEDIATA E PATOLOGIE DELLA MUCOSA LINGUALE: UN'IPOTESI EZIOPATOGENETICA

2007

The nervous system contributes to the pathophysiology of peripheral inflammation and a neurogenic component has been implicated in many inflammatory disease, including oral diseases. Neurogenic inflammation should be regarded as a protective mechanism wich forms the first line of defense and protects tissue integrity. However, prolonged noxius stimulation may result in the inflammatory response. This review focuses on the evidence suggesting that neuropeptides have a pivotal role in the complex cascade of chemical activity associated with oral diseases. The pathophysiology is complex and neuropeptides are not solely responsible for the initiation and progression of the disease. However, sin…
