A value sensitive ABM of the refugee crisis in The Netherlands
2019
We develop an agent based model to characterize the wellbeing of newcomers (i.e. asylum seeking refugees) in the context of asylum logistics using Schwartz’s theory of values. The model produces recommendations for decision-makers with respect to avoiding catastrophic outcomes and maximizing best case outcomes. We conduct analysis to show that while a relatively simple set of conditions is necessary to avoid catastrophic outcomes, these conditions are insufficient to maximize the best case outcomes. Furthermore, the conditions that maximize one best case outcome do so at the expense of another. The result is a platform for decision-makers to understand tradeoffs in policies for government a…
Agent-based modelling of values: the case of value sensitive design for refugee logistics
2020
We have used value sensitive design as a method to develop an agent-based model of values in humanitarian logistics for refugees. Schwartz's theory of universal values is implemented in the model in such a way that agents can make value trade-offs, which are operationalized into a measure of refugee wellbeing and a measure of public opinion about how the refugee logistics is being handled. By trying out different ‘value-scenarios’, stakeholders who are responsible for, or involved in refugee logistics can have insights into the effects of various value choices. The model is visualized and made usable as a platform (interactive website) for decision-makers to understand the trade-offs in pol…
Le prime trascrizioni del palinsesto di Gaio e il presunto «mistero» delle schede veronesi (BCapVr, Cod. DCCCIX)
2014
This paper addresses the question of the origin of the partial transcription of Gaius’ palimpsest still preserved in the Capitular Library of Verona (BCapVr, Cod. DCCCIX) and allows to solve the pretended «mystery» about its presence in this library. A comparison with the fair copy (Reinschrift) of the transcription belonging to the Berlin State Library – Prussian Cultural Heritage (SBB-PK, Ms. lat. fol. 308, K. 1, Konv. 1) shows that the Cod. DCCCIX of the Capitular Library can not be regarded as a forgotten copy or a gift. Similarly, the idea that the manuscript was the first fair copy of the transcription works is not plausible. Anyway, a neglected information provided by one of the Prus…

The rise of the hybrid model of art museums and cultural institutions. The case of Barcelona
2015
ABSTRACTArts and museum management analysis usually classifies art museums and cultural institutions as a public or private non-for-profit. However, budget and analysis management, as Mark J. Schuster stated, reveals that the majority of museums and cultural institutions cannot be classified neither public nor private non-profit, because they are hybrids. This paper analyses with a multidimensional methodology the different degrees of hybridization of Barcelona's museums and cultural institutions. Finally, we explain its phenomenon as the emergence of a new hybrid local model of museums and cultural institutions, which Barcelona is a singular and advanced case.
Accessibility of the Italian institutional web pages: a survey on the compliance of the Italian public administration web pages to the Stanca Act and…
2014
Accessibility of the Italian public administration web pages is ruled by the Stanca Act and in particular the Decree of the Minister issued on July 8, 2005. In this paper, an objective test is performed on the official web pages of the Italian province and region chief towns to check their compliance to the 22 technical requirements defined by the Stanca Act. A sample of 976 web pages belonging to the websites of the Italian chief towns have been downloaded in the period October---December 2012. Such a data collection has been submitted to Achecker, the worldwide recognized syntax and accessibility validation service. Several accessibility and syntax errors have been found following the aut…
Labor Market Flexibility and Unemployment: New Empirical Evidence of Static and Dynamic Effects
2012
The aim of this paper is to analyze the relationship between labor market flexibility and unemployment outcomes. Using a panel of 97 countries from 1985 to 2008, the results of the paper suggest that improvements in labor market flexibility have a statistically and significant negative impact on unemployment outcomes (over unemployment, youth unemployment, and long-term unemployment). Among the different labor market flexibility indicators analyzed, hiring and firing regulations and hiring costs are found to have the strongest effect.
Wilhelm Studemund e il «martire illustre della paleografia»
2012
On the basis of unpublished manuscript materials – especially a letter from 22nd April, 1866 – this paper reconstructs some unknown aspects of the background and of the evaluation of Wilhelm Studemund’s apograph of the Institutes of Gaius published in 1874 and its Supplementa published in 1884. Particular attention is paid to the use of chemical substances for the decipherment of the Gaius’ palimpsest.
Spatial fragmentation of, and US support for, the main multilateral institutions of the western order
2017
The growth of China-led minilateral initiatives mostly of a regional character has challenged the main multilateral institutions of the Western order and, ultimately, US authority. Faced with a progressive delegitimation of the institutional architecture that it promoted after World War II, the US, under the Obama administration, has acted to defend the existing main multilateral institutions of the order (UN, IMF, WB and WTO), attributing them with a strategic role. More than being radical, though, the reforms enacted have been incremental and pragmatic, but always imperfect. More importantly, they have not altered US influence, which is exercised mostly through informal means. This, howev…
