The role of perspective on students’ use of multiple documents to solve an openended Task
2013
AbstractMcCrudden & Schraw (2007) show how students’ interaction with a text is mediated by the instructions they are presented with. Specifically, perspective instructions prompt readers to use background knowledge to evaluate text from an assigned point of view. Research on perspective in single texts has demonstrated that readers confer relevance on text segments that are consistent with the assigned perspective (Pichert & Anderson, 1977). This work has tested the effects of perspective when reading conflicting information from multiple documents to perform an open-ended task, as well as has studied if the trustworthiness of a source exerts any influence on students’ decision to use info…
Flipped Classroom: Aprendizaje Personalizado en la Universidad
2020
The project considers the Flipped Classroom methodology as a strategy that help to personalize learning. Firstly, higher education context will be considered. Then, the instructor’s role at University will be presented. Qualitative methodology was chosen as a method and in depth interviews were undertaken. Results shows that effective learning is connected to the ability the instructor has to motivate his/her students, to how much is he/she able to create a good environment for learning, to his/her ability to guide students towards their future jobs. El proyecto pretende presentar la metodología de la Flipped Classroom como estrategia metodológica personalizada. En su estructuración, este t…

Achieving universal primary education by 2015 - a chance for every child
2003

The book assesses whether universal primary education can be achieved by 2015. The study focuses on the largest low-income countries that are furthest from the goal, home to about seventy five percent of the children out of school globally. By analyzing education policies, and financing patterns in relatively high-performing countries, the study identifies a new policy, and financing f…
Reforming the Teaching and Learning of Foundational Mathematics Courses: An Investigation into the Status Quo of Teaching, Feedback Delivery, and Ass…
2022
Several universities are witnessing an increase in students’ enrolment in mathematics-intensive programmes over the last decades. This increase has come with the price of high failure rates in foundational mathematics courses, which poses challenges to mathematics teaching and learning in higher education. It is therefore inevitable, for some universities, to transform the teaching and learning of mathematics to more student-centred approaches that engage the students mathematically and enhance their success rates. We approach this transformative effort by investigating students’ perception of teaching, feedback, and assessment as a first step in reforming the teaching of a firs…
Cultural transposition: Italian didactic experiences inspired by Chinese and Russian perspectives on whole number arithmetic
2019
The paper presents some reflections and activities developed by researchers and teachers involved in teacher education programs on cultural transposition. The construct of cultural transposition is presented as a condition for decentralizing the didactic practice of a specific cultural context through contact with other didactic practices of different cultural contexts. We discuss the background theoretical issues of this approach and also give an analysis of two examples of cultural transposition experiences carried out in Italy. In particular, by means of qualitative analysis of some excerpts, discussions, and interviews, we show that the contact with different perspectives coming from Ch…
Qualities of mathematical discourses in kindergartens
2020
AbstractIn this study we investigated qualities of the mathematical discourse in four kindergarten classes in which kindergarten teachers and 5-year-old children engaged in mathematical learning activities. We analysed differences in the mathematical discourses in two experimental kindergarten classes and two control kindergarten classes, in a research and development project. The overarching research question guiding our study was as follows: what characterises the mathematical discourse unfolding in kindergarten classes? In our study we drew on the theoretical framework Mathematical Discourse in Instruction coined by Adler and Ronda, as we quantified the collected qualitative data. Our an…
The role of language on the reversal error. A study with bilingual Basque-Spanish students

The reversal error is a prevalent phenomenon that consists of reversing the relationship between two variables when writing equations from comparison in verbal language. A study with 169 Basque/Spa...
Aspects of “Anschauung” in the Work of Felix Klein
2018
Aimed at modernizing the teaching of mathematics at German secondary schools around 1900, The “Kleinian Reform Movement” was characterized by Felix Klein’s two key demands: “strengthening spatial intuition” and “training the habit of functional reasoning”. This paper presents a number of examples demonstrating the importance of the concept of intuition (Anschauung) for Klein and explains the role he assigned to intuition in mathematics instruction at school and university.
Assessing the effectiveness of GraphoLearn combined with classroom instruction on phonics : a randomised control trial
2023
Proficiency in reading is a gateway for learning. However, the literacy rate in India stands at only 73% today. Many children studying in English-medium public schools often face a learning disadvantage through the schooling years since they struggle in learning to read in English which manifests into a struggle with reading to learn in later years. This disadvantage is more pronounced in children living in poverty. Thus, consistent efforts towards building foundational literacy skills of these children when developmentally appropriate is important to overcome the learning crisis. The aim of this study was to determine whether GraphoLearn, a computer assisted learning tool, combined with Gr…
