1H, 13C and 15N NMR and electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometric characterizations of five lithocholate esters of piperazine diamides are described. Two of them are cholaphane-type cyclic structures esterified with 2,2′-bipyridine-4,4 ′ - and pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid and the other three esters are open structures comprising two or four lithocholyl residues. The conformational preferences of the dimeric congeners were examined by using molecular modelling and variable-temperature 1H NMR techniques. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A series of amino- and hydroxyalkyl amides of bile acids have been synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), (1)H and (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), as well as electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) measurements. The ability of the synthesized molecules to promote gel formation was systematically investigated. Out of 396 combinations formed by 11 compounds and 36 different solvents, 22 gel-containing systems were obtained with 1% (w/v) gelator concentration. Carbonate-coordinated metal complexes precede the formation of liquid amorphous mineral emulsions of divalent metal carbonates†

During the mineralisation of metal carbonates MCO3 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba, Mn, Cd, Pb) liquid-like amorphous intermediates emerge. These intermediates that form via a liquid/liquid phase separation behave like a classical emulsion and are stabilized electrostatically. The occurrence of these intermediates is attributed to the formation of highly hydrated networks whose stability is mainly based on weak interactions and the variability of the metal-containing pre-critical clusters. Their existence and compositional freedom are evidenced by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Liquid intermediates in non-classical crystallisation pathways seem to be more common than assumed.

A complete characterization of the proteome of seminal plasma (SP) is an essential step to understand how SP influences sperm function and fertility after artificial insemination (AI). The purpose of this study was to identify which among characterized proteins in boar SP were differently expressed among AI boars with significantly different fertility outcomes. Saliva electrophoretic protein profiles in infants: changes with age and impact of teeth eruption and diet transition.

International audience; Objective : The objective of this study was to describe the changes in salivary protein profiles in infants between the ages of 3 and 6 months, and to evaluate the impact of teeth eruption and introduction of solid foods on such profiles. Design : 73 infants were followed longitudinally at 3 and 6 months of age. Their whole saliva proteins were separated by SDS–PAGE electrophoresis and semi-quantified by image analysis. Amylase activity was also measured on a sub-sample of the population (n=42 infants). Determination of microcystins in fish by solvent extraction and liquid chromatography

A liquid chromatography electrospray mass spectrometry (LC/ESI/MS) method has been developed to identify and quantify microcystins in fish liver and intestine. Microcystins (MCs) were extracted from 500 mg sample with methanol-water (85:25, v/v) and the extracts concentrated to 250 microl. The parameters were optimized by a full factorial 2(3) design. Neither laborious pre-treatment nor clean up were necessary. MCs were separated using conventional C18 column and an acetonitrile-acidified water (pH 3) gradient.
