Advanced imaging of the gastrointestinal tract: research vs. clinical tools?

2009

Diagnostic endoscopy has moved forward considerably in the recent years. Still, three major needs have to be satisfied: endoscopy should be able to detect a lesion, characterize the lesion, and then its nature should be confirmed. These steps should ideally translate into an immediate therapeutic decision.High definition endoscopy has optimized our endoscopic view onto the mucosa and can be combined with digital surface enhancement modalities. Chromoendoscopy still holds a place to detect especially flat lesions in high-risk patients such as ulcerative colitis. Digital chromoendoscopy techniques such as narrow band imaging, i-scan, or Fuji intelligent chromo endoscopy offer new possibilitie…

Chromoendoscopy: What Is Its True Value for Ulcerative Colitis Surveillance?

2010

Advanced imaging technologies are enabling targeted biopsies or endoscopic resections due to better visualization of the mucosal architecture. This new concept of ‘smart biopsies’ is in particular important for patients with higher risk for development cancer (e.g. ulcerative colitis) but can also be beneficial for screening purposes. This short review will focus on new imaging modalities like chromoendoscopy, digital chromoendoscopy, high-definition endoscopy and confocal laser endomicroscopy in the lower GI tract which will be crucial in the future to detect colorectal neoplasia earlier then before.

Ultrafast decay of the excited singlet states of thioxanthone by internal conversion and intersystem crossing.

2010

The experimental ultrafast photophysics of thioxanthone in several aprotic organic solvents at room temperature is presented, measured using femtosecond transient absorption together with high-level ab initio CASPT2 calculations of the singlet- and triplet-state manifolds in the gas phase, including computed state minima and conical intersections, transition energies, oscillator strengths, and spin-orbit coupling terms. The initially populated singlet pi pi* state is shown to decay through internal conversion and intersystem crossing processes via intermediate n pi* singlet and triplet states, respectively. Two easily accessible conical intersections explain the favorable internal conversio…

Trace detection of plutonium by three-step photoionization with a laser system pumped by a copper vapor laser

1985

Laser photoionization has been used to detect trace amounts of plutonium. A high sensitivity and selectivity has been achieved by applying three-step excitation and ionization of the plutonium atoms with high pulse-repetition rates and additional mass determination by time-of-flight measurements. A laser system was developed which consists of a copper vapor laser pumping three dye lasers simultaneously. Samples containing between 1010 and 1012 atoms of239Pu on Re filaments were measured yielding strong resonance signals with maximum ion count rates of several kHz at a vanishingly low background. A detection efficiency of 10−7 was determined allowing the detection of about 108 plutonium atom…

Accurate tuning of mismatched twin-core fiber filters

1998

We have demonstrated a reproducible and accurate way of tuning the coupling wavelength of a mismatched twin-core filter. This method allows high quality all-fiber filters to be implemented with low loss at any desired wavelength over a range of few hundred nanometers from the same fiber. An ~500-nm tuning range is demonstrated, limited only by the measurement setup and not by the technique itself. Highly accurate control of the filtering wavelength in combination with control of filtering strength by adjustment of the length of the twin-core fibers allows complex filter profiles to be implemented by cascading of several different filters. These filters are also very stable to a change in te…

Contribution to the study of physico-chemical properties of surfaces modified by last treatment : application to the enhancement of localized corrosi…

2011

Metallic materials are more and more used in severe conditions with particularly strong request for improving their behavior in aggressive environment and especially over long periods. The objective of this PhD work is to estimate the potentiality of a laser surface melting treatment on the improvement of the stainless steel 304L corrosion resistance, surface treatments by laser can be revisited on the basis of a recent change in the laser technology. In the frame of this work, a nano-pulsed laser fiber was chosen : it allows the treated surface to be melted for few microns in depth, followed by an ultra-fast solidification occuring with cooling rates up to 1011 K/s. The combination of thes…

Radiation defects in undoped and Nd‐doped LaGaO 3 crystals

2005

Radiation induced defects have been studied in undoped and Nd-doped (6 mol% and 12 mol%) LaGaO3 crystals. Wide absorption band (2.2–2.8 eV) was observed after crystal irradiation with X-rays at 300 K. Induced defects have been annealed in air at ∼450 K. Similar absorption band was observed in transient absorption spectra after ns-pulsed electron beam excitation. The radiation defect creation efficiency is higher in undoped LaGaO3 crystal. It is shown that small concentration of Nd-doping increases the LaGaO3 crystal radiation hardness. In transient absorption spectra along with 2.7 eV band the absorption bands at 1.5 eV and 2.2 eV were observed. The decay process of transient absorption has…

Decoupling the artificial special pair to slow down the rate of singlet energy transfer

2012

Trimer 2, composed of a cofacial heterobismacrocycle, octamethyl-porphyrin zinc(II) and bisarylporphyrin zinc(II) held by an anthracenyl spacer, and a flanking acceptor, bisarylporphyrin free-base ( Ar = -3,5-(t Bu )2 C 6 H 3), has been studied by means of absorption spectroscopy, "steady state and time-resolved fluorescence" and fs transient absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) in order to assess the effect of decoupling the chromophores' low energy MOs on the rate of the singlet, S1, energy transfer, k ET , compared to a recently reported work on a heavily coupled trimeric system, Trimer 1, [biphenylenebis(n-nonyl)porphyrin zinc(II)]-bisarylporphyrin free-base ( A…

Transient absorption spectra and relaxation kinetics in Nb-doped PbWO4 scintillating crystals

2001

Abstract The spectra and relaxation kinetics of absorption induced by a pulsed electron beam were studied for undoped and Nb-doped PbWO 4 single crystals. A significant influence of Nb doping on transient absorption was found. The influence of Nb doping on the relaxation kinetics is proposed to be due to an oxygen vacancy involving electron–hole recombination. A delay was observed (35– 50 ns ) between the growth of F-centers and the irradiation pulse. A large portion of the F-centers decays within ∼16 μs due to recombination with mobile holes. The prolonged recombination processes are responsible for the decrease of the scintillation yield in PbWO 4 : Nb crystals.

The virtual reconstruction of temple B in Selinunte excavation site

2008

This paper proposes a study on the virtual reconstruction of temple B in Selinunte. It is the smallest of Selinunte’s temples yet, despite its size, it has been the subject of great interest and debate by scholars since its discovery in 1823. The studies carried out throughout the XIX century and the first half of the XX century provided different renderings, especially as to the organization of the elevation. The goal of this work is the virtual anastylosis of temple B, through the study of all available historical sources, the survey of fragments preserved today at the “A.Salinas” Regional Archaeology Museum in Palermo, and the survey of the finds at Selinunte’s site. The virtual reconstr…
