Deformation profile in GaN quantum dots: Medium-energy ion scattering experiments and theoretical calculations
2005
Medium energy ion scattering (MEIS) has been used to measure at the scale of the monolayer the deformation profile of self-organized GaN quantum dots grown on AlN by molecular-beam epitaxy. The effect of capping the GaN dots by a thin layer of AlN has also been studied. It is shown that GaN dots are partially relaxed in every situation. Capping them with AlN has little effect on the basal plane, as expected, but strongly modifies the strain of the upper part of dots. The experimental results are compared with theoretical calculations, allowing one to conclude that GaN quantum dots experience a nonbiaxial strain, which drastically decreases when going from the basal plane up to the apex of t…
Numerical analysis of the influence of ultrasonic vibration on crystallization processes
2011
The challenge in the future fabrication of semiconductor bulk crystals is the improvement of the crystal quality with a simultaneous increase of the yield. For that, a proper control of mass transfer within the fluid phase is required. Besides the damping of violent convective fluctuations, the thickness of the diffusion boundary layer, causing morphological instability, has to be decreased. The influence of ultrasound in molten Germanium was analyzed by numerical simulations. The simulations were provided by applying commercial software packages ANSYS ® and FLUENT ® . ANSYS ® was used to model the ultrasonic wave propagation in the whole growth system consisting of melt and crystal, crucib…
Crystal Reorientation and Amorphization Induced by Stressing Efficient and Stable P–I–N Vacuum‐Processed MAPbI 3 Perovskite Solar Cells
2021
Herein, the long-term stability of vacuum-deposited methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI(3)) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of around 19% is evaluated. A low-temperature atomic layer deposition (ALD) Al2O3 coating is developed and used to protect the MAPbI(3) layers and the solar cells from environmental agents. The ALD encapsulation enables the MAPbI(3) to be exposed to temperatures as high as 150 degrees C for several hours without change in color. It also improves the thermal stability of the solar cells, which maintain 80% of the initial PCEs after aging for approximate to 40 and 37days at 65 and 85 degrees C, respectively. However, room-temperature…
Magnetic and magneto-optical properties of nickel hexacyanoferrate/chromate thin films
2017
One of the most important challenges of modern science and technology is the quest for novel and tuneable materials, the properties of which can be widely controlled by chemical modifications or external stimuli. Simultaneously, an interest in the development of magnetic thin films also gains significant attention. In the current paper we bring together both these challenges and present a study of a new type of low-dimensional nickel hexacyanoferrate/chromate system. Thin films were obtained by the "layer by layer" deposition technique, where the ratio of Fe/Cr was controlled by the dipping sequence. The scope of this work is a comprehensive analysis of structural, spectroscopic and magneti…
Characterization process to measure the electrical contact resistance of Gas Diffusion Layers under mechanical static compressive loads
2016
AEM2016. International conference on Advanced Energy Materials, University of Surrey, Guildford, ROYAUME-UNI, 12-/09/2016 - 14/09/2016; Recent research has identified the mechanical properties of the fuel cell internal components (in particular, the Gas Diffusion Layers - GDLs) as key-parameters to obtain high final performances of the generator. The mechanical compression modulus of these components, the stability of their mechanical properties with respect to temperature and humidity, and their ability to interact with water have an impact on the electrical contact resistances in the stack and, by consequence, on the overall performance of the electric generator. Reducing the losses by co…
Charge Transport Layers Limiting the Efficiency of Perovskite Solar Cells: How To Optimize Conductivity, Doping, and Thickness
2019
Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are one of the main research topics of the photovoltaic community; with efficiencies now reaching up to 24%, PSCs are on the way to catching up with classical inorganic solar cells. However, PSCs have not yet reached their full potential. In fact, their efficiency is still limited by nonradiative recombination, mainly via trap-states and by losses due to the poor transport properties of the commonly used transport layers (TLs). Indeed, state-of-the-art TLs (especially if organic) suffer from rather low mobilities, typically within 10(-5) and 10(-2) cm(-2) V-1 s(-1), when compared to the high mobilities, 1-10 cm(-2) V-1 s(-1), measured for perovskites. This work…
Normal Metal-Insulator-Superconductor Tunnel Junctions With Pulsed Laser Deposited Titanium Nitride as Superconductor
2021
Here we report the fabrication of normal metal – insulator – superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions using superconducting titanium nitride grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The films for NIS junction fabrication were deposited on two different substrates: silicon nitride film and magnesium oxide. TiN films were characterized by means of electrical transport measurements, and films with superconducting transition temperatures above the liquid helium boiling point were chosen for fabrication of NIS junctions. Tunnel junction devices were successfully fabricated using electron beam lithography and shadow evaporation techniques. The insulator layer formation was performed using two differe…
Well-aligned hydrothermally synthesized zinc oxide nanorods on p-GaN without a seed layer
2015
Zinc oxide nanorods have great potential for the realization of high efficiency heterostructure LEDs based on pdoped gallium nitride. In order to obtain a good confinement of the light, a well-aligned nanorod waveguiding structure is desirable. This paper reports on the fabrication of vertical zinc oxide nanorods using a solution-based growth process that does not require a seed layer. The nanorods obtained follow the crystalline growth direction of the GaN layer along the c-axis. Various results with different reagent concentrations are reported.
Influence of charge transfer doping on the morphologies of C60islands on hydrogenated diamond C(100)-(2×1)
2012
The adsorption and island formation of C${}_{60}$ fullerenes on the hydrogenated C(100)-($2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1$):H diamond surface is studied using high-resolution noncontact atomic force microscopy in ultrahigh vacuum. At room temperature, C${}_{60}$ fullerene molecules assemble into monolayer islands, exhibiting a hexagonally close-packed internal structure. Dewetting is observed when raising the substrate temperature above approximately 505 K, resulting in two-layer high islands. In contrast to the monolayer islands, these double-layer islands form extended wetting layers. This peculiar behavior is explained by an increased molecule-substrate binding energy in the case of…
Atmosphere-induced change of microhardness and plasticity of C60 single crystals and polycrystalline films
1998
Abstract The effect of air exposure and visible light illumination on the microhardness, plasticity and dislocation mobility in the C60 single crystals was investigated. Microhardness values for defined structural states of the fullerene (pristine, oxygen-intercalated, photo-oxidized) are reported. It has been shown that oxygen intercalation in the fullerene lattice during air-aging in the dark results in the suppression of dislocation mobility. However, only a slight increase in the hardness of oxygenated samples was observed. A remarkable increase in the hardness and decrease in the plasticity of the C60 crystals under illumination-assisted air exposure was noted. Photochemical transforma…
