Colonization is crucial to habitat restoration projects that rely on the spontaneous regeneration of the original vegetation. However, as a previously declining plant species spreads again, the likelihood of founder effects increases through recurrent population founding and associated serial bottlenecks. Molecular analysis of Gaucher disease: distribution of eight mutations and the complete gene deletion in 27 patients from Germany

Gaucher disease is the most common lysosomal storage disease with a high prevalence in the Ashkenazi Jewish population but it is also present in other populations. The presence of eight mutations (1226G, 1448C, IVS2+1. 84GG, 1504T, 1604T, 1342C and 1297T) and the complete deletion of the beta-glucocerebrosidase gene was investigated in 25 unrelated non-Jewish patients with Gaucher's disease in Germany. Congruence in genetic markers used to describe Mediterranean and Atlantic populations of European hake (Merluccius merluccius L. 1758)

Summary Eight samples of the hake, Merluccius merluccius L., from the Mediterranean basin (370 fishes total) and one from the Atlantic ocean (50 fishes) were analysed in order to assess genetic variability and describe genetic population structure. Five polymorphic protein coding loci were scored (ADH*, PGI-1*, PGI-2*, PGM* and SOD-1*) in eight samples, together with a haplotype variation of four samples, obtained from polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR–RFLP) analysis on the mitochondrial DNA control region. Diagnosis of flavobacteriosis by direct amplification of rRNA genes

A broad-range bacterial PCR method with universal 16S rDNA targeting primers and bacterial cultivation was used to identify the putative pathogen in flavobacterial outbreaks. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis and sequencing of the partial 16S rDNA PCR products of 10 skin samples and 10 representative isolates derived from the same fish specimens revealed differences between direct molecular and cultivation-based analysis. Cluster of cases of Salmonella enterica serotype Rissen infection in a general hospital, Italy, 2007.

In 2007, three strains of Salmonella enterica serotype Rissen (S. Rissen) were isolated in the laboratory of diagnostic microbiology of the General Hospital of Prato, Tuscany, Italy, over a 1 month and half interval of time. The first isolate was recovered on January 26 from an outpatient with enteritis. Then, two strains were isolated on February 16 and March 11 respectively, from central venous catheters of patients who were being hospitalized in two departments of the Hospital. Mitochondrial DNA variability of striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) in the Spanish Mediterranean waters

Frozen muscle samples from 44 striped dolphins stranded on the Spanish Mediterranean coasts from 1990 to 1993 have been studied by means of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction site analysis. Thirty-five of these dolphins were affected by a die-off occurring during this time in the western Mediterranean Sea. The mtDNA from each dolphin was digested with 15 restriction endonucleases that recognized 61 different restriction sites. The specific location of these sites on the mitochondrial gene map allowed us to determine the distribution of variability along this molecule.
