De novo transcriptome assembly of a facultative parasitic nematode Pelodera (syn. Rhabditis) strongyloides

2018

Pelodera strongyloides is a generally free-living gonochoristic facultative nematode. The whole genomic sequence of P. strongyloides remains unknown but 4 small subunit ribosomal RNA (ssrRNA) gene sequences are available. This project launched a de novo transcriptome assembly with 100 bp paired-end RNA-seq reads from normal, starved and wet-plate cultured animals. Trinity assembly tool generated 104,634 transcript contigs with N50 contig being 2195 bp and average contig length at 1103 bp. Transcriptome BLASTX matching results of five nematodes (C. elegans, Strongyloides stercoralis, Necator americanus, Trichuris trichiura, and Pristionchus pacificus) were consistent with their evolutionary …

Music style not only modulates the auditory cortex, but also motor related areas

2021

The neuroscience of music has recently attracted significant attention, but the effect of music style on the activation of auditory-motor regions has not been explored. The aim of the present study is to analyze the differences in brain activity during passive listening to non-vocal excerpts of four different music genres (classical, reggaeton, electronic and folk). A functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment was performed. Twenty-eight participants with no musical training were included in the study. They had to passively listen to music excerpts of the above genres during fMRI acquisition. Imaging analysis was performed at the whole-brain-level and in auditory-motor regions …

Subnational mapping of HIV incidence and mortality among individuals aged 15-49 years in sub-Saharan Africa, 2000-18: a modelling study

2021

Background. High-resolution estimates of HIV burden across space and time provide an important tool for tracking and monitoring the progress of prevention and control efforts and assist with improving the precision and efficiency of targeting efforts. We aimed to assess HIV incidence and HIV mortality for all second-level administrative units across sub-Saharan Africa. Methods. In this modelling study, we developed a framework that used the geographically specific HIV prevalence data collected in seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care clinics to train a model that estimates HIV incidence and mortality among individuals aged 15–49 years. We used a model-based geostatistical framework to e…

Internal and external mapping of preferences for commercial lager beers : comparison of hedonic ratings by consumers blind versus with knowledge of b…

2001

Abstract The individual preferences of 170 consumers in six categories of age (20s, 30s, 40s) and gender (men, women) for 24 domestic, imported or specialty lager beers, tasted first blind and then with knowledge of brand and price, were investigated by preference mapping techniques. Internal preference mapping revealed differences in the preferences of consumers, with some consumers preferring domestic or ice beers, and others preferring specialty or imported beers. Hedonic ratings changed significantly from the blind to the informed tasting condition, particularly for consumers in their twenties, thereby documenting the significant role of non-sensory variables in the formulation of a hed…

Visualizing Human Protein‐Protein Interactions and Subcellular Localizations on Cell Images Through CellMap

2020

Visualizing protein data remains a challenging and stimulating task. Useful and intuitive visualization tools may help advance biomolecular and medical research; unintuitive tools may bar important breakthroughs. This protocol describes two use cases for the CellMap (http://cellmap.protein.properties) web tool. The tool allows researchers to visualize human protein-protein interaction data constrained by protein subcellular localizations. In the simplest form, proteins are visualized on cell images that also show protein-protein interactions (PPIs) through lines (edges) connecting the proteins across the compartments. At a glance, this simultaneously highlights spatial constraints that prot…

Mapping effective connectivity between the frontal and contralateral primary motor cortex using dual-coil transcranial magnetic stimulation

2019

AbstractCytoarchitectonic, anatomical and electrophysiological studies have divided the frontal cortex into distinct functional subdivisions. Many of these subdivisions are anatomically connected with the contralateral primary motor cortex (M1); however, effective neurophysiological connectivity between these regions is not well defined in humans. Therefore, we aimed to use dual-coil transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to map, with high spatial resolution, the effective connectivity between different frontal regions of the right hemisphere and contralateral M1 (cM1). TMS was applied over the left M1 alone (test pulse) or after a conditioning pulse was applied to different grid points co…

Sense Equivalence in plWordNet to Princeton WordNet Mapping

2019

Abstract Though the interest in use of wordnets for lexicography is (gradually) growing, no research has been conducted so far on equivalence between lexical units (or senses) in inter-linked wordnets. In this paper, we present and validate a procedure of sense-linking between plWordNet and Princeton WordNet. The proposed procedure employs a continuum of three equivalence types: strong, regular and weak, distinguished by a custom-designed set of formal, semantic and translational features. To validate the procedure, three independent samples of 120 sense pairs were manually analysed with respect to the features. The results show that synsets from the two wordnets linked by interlingual syno…

Containers in Software Development: A Systematic Mapping Study

2019

Over the past decade, continuous software development has become a common place in the field of software engineering. Containers like Docker are a lightweight solution that developers can use to deploy and manage applications. Containers are used to build both component-based architectures and microservice architectures. Still, practitioners often view containers only as way to lower resource requirements compared to virtual machines. In this paper, we conducted a systematic mapping study to find information on what is known of how containers are used in software development. 56 primary studies were selected into this paper and they were categorized and mapped to identify the gaps in the cu…

On presentations for mapping class groups of orientable surfaces via Poincaré's Polyhedron theorem and graphs of groups

2021

The mapping class group of an orientable surface with one boundary component, S, is isomorphic to a subgroup of the automorphism group of the fundamental group of S. We call these subgroups algebraic mapping class groups. An algebraic mapping class group acts on a space called ordered Auter space. We apply Poincaré's Polyhedron theorem to this action. We describe a decomposition of ordered Auter space. From these results, we deduce that the algebraic mapping class group of S is a quotient of the fundamental group of a graph of groups with, at most, two vertices and, at most, six edges. Vertex and edge groups of our graph of groups are mapping class groups of orientable surfaces with one, tw…

Spatio-Temporal Spread Pattern of COVID-19 in Italy

2021

This paper investigates the spatio-temporal spread pattern of COVID-19 in Italy, during the first wave of infections, from February to October 2020. Disease mappings of the virus infections by using the Besag–York–Mollié model and some spatio-temporal extensions are provided. This modeling framework, which includes a temporal component, allows the studying of the time evolution of the spread pattern among the 107 Italian provinces. The focus is on the effect of citizens’ mobility patterns, represented here by the three distinct phases of the Italian virus first wave, identified by the Italian government, also characterized by the lockdown period. Results show the effectiveness of the lockdo…
