Recent progress in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for CO2 capture at different pressures
2022
Global climate change ensued by the rise in atmospheric CO2 levels is one of the greatest challenges our planet is facing today. This worldwide distress demands technologies that can contribute to our society toward “negative carbon emissions”. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies are in in important role for capturing CO2 from existing emission sources, such as industrial and energy production point sources, before new more prominent modifications to the energy infrastructure can be implemented. Recently, alongside point source capture, direct air capture (DAC) processes have emerged as highly sought-after technologies that are able to capture CO2 from the ambient air. Alongside t…
Silver Sulfide Nanoclusters and the Superatom Model
2015
The superatom model of electron-shell closings has been widely used to explain the stability of noble-metal nanoclusters of few nanometers, including thiolate-protected Au and Ag nanoclusters. The presence of core sulfur atoms in silver sulfide (Ag–S) nanoclusters renders them a class of clusters with distinctive properties as compared to typical noble-metal clusters. Here, it is natural to ask whether the superatom model is still applicable for the Ag–S nanoclusters with mixed metal and nonmetal core atoms. To address this question, we applied density functional simulations to analyze a series of Ag–S nanoclusters: Ag14S(SPh)12(PPh3)8, Ag14(SC6H3F2)12(PPh3)8, Ag70S16(SPh)34(PhCO2)4(triphos…
Theoretical and computational studies of magnetic anisotropy and exchange coupling in molecular systems
2018
The field of molecular magnetism studies the magnetic properties of molecular systems as opposed to conventional metal-based magnets. The high chemical modifiability of the constituting molecules makes such materials highly versatile, and the small size of the building blocks leads to the rise of various quantum mechanical phenomena, such as tunneling and entanglement. These phenomena can then be further utilized in the construction of nanoscale quantum devices. This dissertation describes computational and theoretical studies in the field of molecular magnetism using state-of-the-art quantum chemical methods based on ab initio multireference approaches and broken symmetry density functional t…
Preparation of a Series of “Ru(p-cymene)” Complexes with Different N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands for the Catalytic β-Alkylation of Secondary Alcohol…
2008
A series of five different “(p-cymene)Ru(NHC)” complexes (NHC = imidazolin-2-ylidene, imidazolin-4-ylidene, and pyrazolin-3-ylidene) have been obtained and fully characterized. The crystal structure of two of the new complexes has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. All five complexes have been tested in the catalytic β-alkylation of secondary alcohols with primary alcohols and the dimerization of phenylacetylene, showing an excellent activity in both processes. A clear improvement on the catalytic activity of the complexes is observed when the more basic NHC ligands are used. The pyrazolylidene-Ru complex lies among the best catalysts for the β-alkylation of secondary alcohols re…

The modelling of the behaviour of solid inclusions in the EM induced recirculated turbulent flows of liquid metal
2014
Melt Processed PCL/PEG Scaffold with Discrete Pore Size Gradient for Selective Cellular Infiltration
2016
In order to develop scaffold able to mimic the natural gradient properties of tissues, biphasic and triphasic approaches were adopted. In this work, polycaprolactone/polyethylene glycol (PCL/PEG) scaffolds were prepared by using a combination of melt mixing and selective leaching without harmful solvents. The method permitted to develop three-layer scaffolds with high control of porosity and pore size. The mechanical properties were evaluated under physiological condition in order to simulate the real conditions of work. Co-culture of osteoblastic and fibroblastic mice cells were carried out in order to study the differential cellular permeation through the different pore size layers.
Biological Monitoring Using Lichens as a Source of Information About Contamination of Mountain with Heavy Metals
2022
Abstract The aim of this study was passive biomonitoring of the mountains of southern Poland. Lichens Hypogymnia physodes were used for the study. Concentrations of the heavy metals Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb were determined in these lichens. The concentrations were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The analysis of the concentrations of the determined heavy metals in the lichen thallus allowed to determine the places with the highest and the lowest contamination with a given heavy metal in the study area. It was shown that the area of Great Czantoria and Big Soszow is the most contaminated with heavy metals among the investigated areas. The study shows that the transport of analy…
Neutron Radiography Visualization of Solid Particles in Stirring Liquid Metal
2015
Abstract This paper presents the analysis of the first dynamic neutron radiography experiment that visualized motion of solid particles in liquid metal, which was stirred by a system of four counter-rotating magnets. The paper also contains the quantitative results derived from neutron images: the distribution of particle concentration, number of admixed particles and velocities as functions of the magnet rotation speed.
