A look into the future of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe : an expert consultation

How will the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic develop in the coming months and years? Based on an expert survey, we examine key aspects that are likely to influence COVID-19 in Europe. The future challenges and developments will strongly depend on the progress of national and global vaccination programs, the emergence and spread of variants of concern, and public responses to nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). In the short term, many people are still unvaccinated, VOCs continue to emerge and spread, and mobility and population mixing is expected to increase over the summer. The pianigiani-yorke measure for topological markov chains

We prove the existence of a Pianigiani-Yorke measure for a Markovian factor of a topological Markov chain. This measure induces a Gibbs measure in the limit set. The proof uses the contraction properties of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius operator.

QUANTITATIVE CONVERGENCE RATES FOR SUBGEOMETRIC MARKOV CHAINS

We provide explicit expressions for the constants involved in the characterisation of ergodicity of subgeometric Markov chains. The constants are determined in terms of those appearing in the assumed drift and one-step minorisation conditions. The results are fundamental for the study of some algorithms where uniform bounds for these constants are needed for a family of Markov kernels. Our results accommodate also some classes of inhomogeneous chains.

A novel approach to prevent graphene oxide re-aggregation during the melt compounding with polymers

Abstract The technology for the preparation of polymer-GO nanocomposites was investigated by studying the structure-properties relationships of two different systems, based on PA6 and EVA, fabricated by using different preparation methods, i.e. melt mixing, wet phase inversion, and the combination of the two. The morphology of nanocomposites resulted dramatically influenced by the technique adopted and showed to be the critical variable affecting the physical properties of the materials. Finally, the mechanical and dynamic-mechanical of the nanocomposites were improved by using the hybrid technique combining the two procedures.

Four-wave mixing and vacuum squeezing in polariton microcavities

In a recent paper [1] it has been shown how a bichromatic fast driving of optomechanical (optical domain) and superconducting circuit systems (microwave domain), operating in a limit where they present a non-linear Kerr-type interaction, can give rise to very strong vacuum squeezing. The driving with two close frequencies of a Kerr cavity changes the usual bistability bifurcation behaviour that takes place under monochromatic driving, into a degenerate four-wave mixing bifurcation, where a phase-bistable component starts oscillating spontaneously at a frequency that lies halfway between the two driving frequencies [2]. Fronto-parietal homotopy in resting-state functional connectivity predicts task-switching performance

Homotopic functional connectivity reflects the degree of synchrony in spontaneous activity between homologous voxels in the two hemispheres. Previous studies have associated increased brain homotopy and decreased white matter integrity with performance decrements on different cognitive tasks across the life-span. Here, we correlated functional homotopy, both at the whole-brain level and specifically in fronto-parietal network nodes, with task-switching performance in young adults. Free surface oxygen transfer in large aspect ratio unbaffled bio-reactors, with or without draft-tube

Abstract It is widely accepted that animal cell damage in aerated bioreactors is mainly related to the bursting of bubbles at the air–liquid interface. A viable alternative to sparged bioreactors may be represented by uncovered unbaffled stirred tanks, which have been recently found to be able to provide sufficient mass transfer through the deep free surface vortex which takes place under agitation conditions. Design and fabrication of an acoustic micromixer for biological media activation

International audience; The bioassay of infinitesimal quantities of protein markers in biological samples is the way to early cancer detection. However, this detection can be limited by the diffusion of these macromolecules (analytes) from the bulk to the sensor chip (surface of ligands). Here, we propose a new method to overcome this drawback by the activation of the biological media during the detection step. Generation of high-quality ultra-high repetition rate optical pulse trains around 1.55µm has become increasingly interesting for many scientific applications such as optical sampling, ultra-high capacity transmission systems, component testing or nonlinear phenomena studies. Unfortunately, the current bandwidth limitations of optoelectronic devices do not enable the direct generation of pulses with repetition rate higher than 80GHz and a temporal width below a few ps.
