EL MIEDO EN EDUCACIÓN FÍSICA: UNA HISTORIA RECONOCIBLE
2017
Illness Narrative and Self-Help Culture – Self-Help Writing on Age-Related Infertility
2014
Both self-help books and illness narratives are motivated by an impulse to overcome a crisis and, simultaneously, to help others who suffer from similar conditions. In doing so, authors of self-help and illness narratives move in between polar opposites: they have both individual and collective motives, they have a desire to overcome uncertainty and achieve control and they negotiate the authority of experience versus the authority of expertise. This paper has two objectives: (1) It describes the intersections of illness life writing and self-help culture and traces the thematic, cultural and historical similarities. (2) It analyzes a selection of four autobiographical, U.S.-American self-h…

Health(care) in the Crisis: Reflections in Science and Society on Opioid Addiction
2021
Opioid abuse and misuse have led to an epidemic which is currently spreading worldwide. Since the number of opioid overdoses is still increasing, it is becoming obvious that current rather unsystematic approaches to tackle this health problem are not effective. This review suggests that fighting the opioid epidemic requires a structured public health approach. Therefore, it is important to consider not only scientific and biomedical perspectives, but societal implications and the lived experience of groups at risk as well. Hence, this review evaluates the risk factors associated with opioid overdoses and investigates the rates of chronic opioid misuse, particularly in the context of chronic…
Storie di oggetti (e di sogni) perduti. Musei contemporanei per ritrovarsi
2022
What happens to humanity discarded by history? To the broken dreams (of love and life)? What to do with the objects that fill our life as "fragile ruins" of a dream lost forever? The article, looking at various contemporary projects of permanent museums and temporary exhibitions, intends to outline and lead a reflection on the radical paradigm change that intervenes in the exhibition processes and in the strategies of emotional engagement within contemporary museological policies. Conceived as places of encounter and relationship, museums are open to communities and individual stories. In particular, the emotion of lost guided the constitution of collections of objects, in a series of exhibi…

Agency in first-semester university students’ career plans
2014
In this paper I examine expressions of agency in autobiographical narratives by Finnish speaking university students of Swedish. Students who write about themselves, their decisions and their career plans are simultaneously involved in (re)constructing their identities. The narratives often include references to “communities of practice” (Lave & Wenger 1991; Wenger 1998) that the students consider as significant, and whose membership they see as something worth dreaming of. These kinds of first-person stories can be regarded as important as far as identity formation is concerned (Sfard & Prusak 2005). The narratives can help in building a bridge between the narrator’s past, the present and …
The Narrative Approach to Research Professional Identity: Relational, Temporal, and Dialogical Perspectives
2022
In this chapter, we present the narrative approach as applied in the field of professional learning. The specific aim is to present the methodological opportunities and concerns it raises in research on professional identity within the sociocultural frames of work environments. We utilise examples from empirical studies that have employed a range of narrative methods to collect and analyse datasets. The datasets include individuals’ written and spoken narratives, encompassing the told experiences of their identities, and the meanings underlying these. We illustrate how a particular strength of narrative research lies in its ability to portray temporal pathways through the phenomena under in…

Explanations of success and failure in management learning : What can we learn from Nokia's rise and fall
2016
International audience; In this paper, we study the changing explanations of success and failure over the course of a firm's history. We build on a discursive approach that highlights the role of narrative attributions in making sense of corporate performance. Specifically, we analyze how the Nokia Corporation was framed first as a success and later as a failure and how these dimensions of performance were explained in various actors' narrative accounts. In both the success and failure accounts, our analysis revealed a striking black-and-white picture that resulted in the institutionalization of Nokia's metanarratives of success and failure. Our findings also reveal a number of discursive a…
