Association between phenotypic familial hypercholesterolaemia and telomere length in US adults: results from a multi-ethnic survey

2018

Aims: Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) accelerates atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and accordingly is the most potent hereditary cause of premature coronary heart disease. The association between telomere length (TL), a biological index of ageing, and FH has not been hitherto investigated. We addressed this question using data from the US National Health and Education National Surveys (NHANES, 1999-2002).Methods and results: We included individuals, who had TL measurements (with quantitative polymerase chain reaction method) and a phenotypic diagnosis of FH based on the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network (DLCN) criteria. Sample weights were applied for unequal probabilities of sel…

Moderate influenza vaccine effectiveness against A(H1N1)pdm09 virus, and low effectiveness against A(H3N2) subtype, 2018/19 season in Italy

2019

Background: Influenza vaccines are updated every year to match the vaccine strains with currently circulating viruses; consequently influenza vaccine effectiveness (IVE) has to be assessed annually.Research design and methods: A test-negative case-control study was conducted within the context of the Italian sentinel influenza surveillance network to estimate IVE by age group, virus subtype, and vaccine brand in medically attended laboratory-confirmed influenza. Results: In Italy, the 2018/19 influenza season was characterized by the co-circulation of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and A(H3N2) viruses. The adjusted IVE estimate in preventing influenza was moderate (44.8%, 95% CI: 18.8 to 62.5) again…

Secular trends in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in 32 countries from 2002 to 2010: a cross-national perspective

2015

Background: Sufficient levels of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) give substantial health benefits to adolescents. This article examines trends in physical activity (PA) from 2002 to 2010 across 32 countries from Europe and North America. Methods: Representative samples included 479 674 pupils (49% boys) aged 11 years ( n = 156 383), 13 years ( n = 163 729) and 15 years ( n = 159 562). The trends in meeting the recommendations for PA (at least 60 min daily) were evaluated using logistic regression. Results: There was a slight overall increase between 2002 and 2010 (17.0% and 18.6%, respectively). MVPA increased significantly ( P ≤ 0.05) among boys in 16 countries. Conversely, n…

Many national and international studies have concentrated on the evaluation and promotion of the inclusive qualities of schools. It is a complex issue which has led to wide debate and a variety of contributions which in turn highlight the need for a tool capable of measuring the inclusive quality of our schools in order to determine the empirical evidence regarding this topic. This article presents the results of an experiment in drafting a questionnaire in order to measure the inclusive quality of the school system perceived by its pupils. The questionnaire is intended as an evaluation and selfevaluation tool that enables the inclusive quality generated by the context to be measured as it is perceived by pupils. At the same time the tool allows reflection processes amongst teachers to be promoted so that they can implement educational activities which contribute to the planning and control of inclusive teaching practices. This contribution puts forward an original tool for measuring the inclusive quality of the school system perceived by pupils attending primary school in several Sicilian towns. It was administered in its definitive version to a sample of 1652 children. The psychometric properties of the tool and the significance it can hold in the areas of planning in research and of educational design are presented in this paper.Settore M-PED/03 - Didattica E Pedagogia Speciale

Labor Market Integration and Migration: Impacts on Skill Formation and the Wage Structure

2006

We analyze the impacts of labor market integration and migration on skill formation, wage structures, and per capita GDP of host and source countries. To do so, we propose a model in which heterogeneous agents invest in the acquisition of skills, and in which final good production exhibits increasing returns to scale in the range of available skills. Labor market integration, by allowing for migration in response to wage differentials, changes the wage structures and, therefore, the incentives to become skilled in both host and source countries. We show that our model can largely replicate the empirical evidence concerning international migration, the widening international income dispersio…

The Role of Intraindustry Trade in Interregional Trade in the Midwest of the US

2007

The subject of international trade among countries has long been of concern to policy makers and academics alike. As economic activity has become more and more international in scope, the potential impact of international trade on regional economic growth and income distribution has become central to many studies. Within economics, the study of industrial organization, particularly with respect to imperfect competition and economies of scale and agglomeration, has influenced developments in international trade theory in the past few decades. In identifying the determinants of trade among countries, issues such as market size, relative level of Gross National Product (GNP) per capita, market…

Brand identity documentation: a cross‐national examination of identity standards manuals

2009

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to identify the key features of an identity standards manual and assess the differences in the rules used for applying the brand to both low‐ and high‐context cultures, companies selling consumer goods and those selling services, and multinational and local companies.Design/methodology/approachThe methodology is based on the analysis of 341 identity standards manuals and on the analysis of three key features found in the manuals: contents, normative tone, and development.FindingsThe results divide the contents of the manual into two blocks: core and peripheral; and show that there are differences between the manuals of high‐ and low‐context cultures, comp…

MATRIZ DE CONTABILIDAD SOCIAL DE 1995 PARA ESPAÑA (MCS-95)

2005

A Social Accounting Matrix for Spain in 1995 (MCS-95) is shown in this paper. This new data base contains some novelties in relation to the earlier MCS-90, both in the methodology applied and in the use of new data sources. As to the methodological innovation, the new input output framework of the European Accounting system (SEC-95) is used in the construction of the MCS-95. Also the estimation procedure and the adjustment of some of the accounts is made applying a method based on minimum entropy. In addition, statistical sources that were not used previously, are exploited in the MCS-95, in particular the ECPH for Spain and the Spanish Survey of Wage Structure. Finally, the SAM-LEG directi…
