Water temperature influences growth and gonad differentiation in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax, L. 1758)

The effect of rearing temperature on gonad differentiation and growth was evaluated in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). One control group (CG, n = 60) and two experimental groups (EG1, n = 30; EG2, n = 30) were selected. CG was reared at 15.0 °C during 10 days post-hatch (dph) and at 19.0 °C throughout the remaining larval and post-larval development. EG1 was exposed to 14.5 °C from 1 to 50 dph, followed by an increase to 20 °C until sampling (176 dph). Prevalence and clinical features of polycystic ovarian syndrome in adolescents with previous childhood growth hormone deficiency.

AbstractGrowth hormone (GH) plays a role in the regulation of ovarian function but there are limited data in women with GH deficiency (GHD). Our aim was to evaluate the features of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in women with previous GHD.Data of 22 adolescents previously GH-treated (group A) were compared with those of 22 women with classical PCOS (group B) and 20 controls (group C).: Group A showed higher testosterone (p=0.048) and prevalence of menstrual irregularities (p&lt;0.001) than group C. The new radioligand [H-3]-L 748,337 differentially labels human and rat beta(3)-adrenoceptors

As no suitable radioligand exists for the detection of β3-adrenoceptors, we have explored the radioligand binding properties of a tritiated version of the selective β3-adrenoceptor antagonist L 748,337. Kinetic and equilibrium saturation and competition binding experiments were performed with [(3)H]-L 748,337 on membrane fractions of HEK and CHO cells stably transfected with human and rat β-adrenoceptor subtypes. Metformin: Sex/Gender Differences in Its Uses and Effects-Narrative Review

Metformin (MTF) occupies a major and fundamental position in the therapeutic management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Gender differences in some effects and actions of MTF have been reported. Women are usually prescribed lower MTF doses compared to men and report more gastrointestinal side effects. The incidence of cardiovascular events in women on MTF has been found to be lower to that of men on MTF. Despite some promising results with MTF regarding pregnancy rates in women with PCOS, the management of gestational diabetes, cancer prevention or adjunctive cancer treatment and COVID-19, most robust meta-analyses have yet to confirm such beneficial effects.

Two sibs, whose parents are first cousins, had diabetes mellitus with hyperinsulinism, insensitive insulin receptors, and acanthosis nigricans. Both patients had pigmentary retinopathy, secondary cataracts, labyrinthine deafness, mental retardation, and cerebral atrophy. They were disproportionately short with relatively broad hands and feet and slightly coarse face. The young woman had secondary amenorrhea and polycystic ovaries and the boy gynecomastia and hypergonadotrophic hypogonadism. The spectrum of androgen excess disorders.

A better understanding of the different phenotypes and of their endocrine and metabolic characteristics permits investigators to distinguish three main androgen excess disorders: classic polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), mild ovulatory PCOS, and idiopathic hyperandrogenism. These androgenic phenotypes differ more for the severity of the endocrine and metabolic alteration than for the etiopathogenetic mechanisms. The appearance of a particular androgenic phenotype is determined by a sum of genetic and environmental factors, but mostly by body weight.

Optimization of Cell Growth on Bacterial Cellulose by Adsorption of Collagen and Poly-L-Lysine

Poly-L-lysine and collagen were separately added to bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofibers. The ionic surface charge had been previously modified in order to promote the adsorption of poly-L-lysine and collagen. Cell adhesion of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells on BC surfaces was confirmed by removing unattached cells from the BC substrates. Cell viability was calculated and it was determined that both poly-L-lysine-BC and collagen-BC substrates are viable for cell growth. The results showed that the cell viability in poly-L-lysine modified BC substrate is similar to the one observed in polystyrene tissue culture plates.

Cloning and functional analysis of cDNA encoding the hamster Bcl-2 protein.

We have cloned cDNA encoding hamster Bcl-2 protein from total RNA of CHO-9 cells by RT-PCR using oligonucleotide primers sharing homology with the sequence of mouse and rat bcl-2. The fragments spanning the total coding region were cloned into pCR4-TOPO and sequenced for verification. The hamster bcl-2 cDNA has a size of 711 nucleotides and encodes a polypeptide of 236 amino acids. Hamster Bcl-2 shares 95.8 and 88.6% similarity with mouse and human Bcl-2, respectively. Northern blot analysis revealed a single 7.5 kb bcl-2 transcript in hamster (CHO-9), mouse (BK4), and rat (H5) cells and a 8.5 kb bcl-2 mRNA in human (HeLa MR) cells. Need for liver evaluation in polycystic ovary syndrome

Medicine is changing and requires a more in-depth knowledge also in fields that were previously considered completely different and dedicated to other specialists. A good example of this general trend is the paper by Cerda et al. [1] that shows a high prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). The authors studied 41 young women with PCOS and found that 17 patients (41%) had NAFLD.
