International audience; Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) has been considered as a potential anticancer agent owing to its selectivity for malignant cells. However, its clinical use remains limited because of its poor efficacy. Attempts to increase its antitumor activity include, among others, its functionalization by nanoparticles (NPs). In the present study, TRAIL was grafted onto magnetic spinel iron oxide NPs of defined core size, 10 and 100 nm on average, to see whether the size of the resulting nanovectors, NV10 and NV100, respectively, might affect TRAIL efficacy and selectivity. Aggregation of activated platelets is considerably mediated by the autocrine action of thromboxane A2 (TxA2) which is formed in a prostaglandin endoperoxide H2 synthase-1 (PGHS-1 or COX-1)-dependent manner. The activity of PGHS-1 can be stimulated by peroxides, an effect termed "peroxide tone", that renders PGHS-1 the key regulatory enzyme in the formation of TxA2. Activated platelets release nitric oxide (*NO) and superoxide (O*2) but their interactions with the prostanoid pathway have been controversially discussed in platelet physiology and pathophysiology. The vasoactive properties of 14 organic mononitrates were investigated in vitro using PGF(2alpha)-precontracted porcine pulmonary arteries. A surprisingly wide range of vasorelaxant potencies was observed (pD(2): 3.36-7.50). Activities showed to be highly sensitive to the molecular structure and the substituents at the molecular carrier of the nitrate group. A correlation between lipophilicity and vasorelaxant potency could not be recognized. 2-Nitrooxyethylammoniumnitrate (1) was found to be slightly superior to the high potency trinitrate GTN.

Toxicity as prime selection criterion among SARS-active herbal medications

We present here a new selection criterion for prioritizing research on efficacious drugs for the fight against COVID-19: the relative toxicity versus safety of herbal medications, which were effective against SARS in the 2002/2003 epidemic. We rank these medicines according to their toxicity versus safety as basis for preferential rapid research on their potential in the treatment of COVID-19. The data demonstrate that from toxicological information nothing speaks against immediate investigation on, followed by rapid implementation of Lonicera japonica, Morus alba, Forsythia suspensa, and Codonopsis spec. for treatment of COVID-19 patients. Characterization of the Solid State Properties of Anodic Oxides on Magnetron Sputtered Ta, Nb and Ta-Nb Alloys

Tantalum oxide, niobium oxide and Ta-Nb containing mixed oxides were grown by anodizing sputter-deposited Ta, Nb and Ta-Nb alloys of different compositions. A photoelectrochemical investigation was performed in order to estimate the band gap and the flat band potential of the oxides as a function of their composition. The band gap of the investigated Ta-Nb containing mixed oxides changed monotonically between those estimated for Ta2O5 (4.1 eV) and Nb2O5 (3.4 eV) and in agreement with a proposed correlation between the Band gap of an oxide and the difference of electronegativity of the oxide constituents.
