THE INFLUENCE OF TEXTURE SYMMETRY IN MARKER POINTING: EXPERIMENTING WITH HUMANS AND ALGORITHMS
2011
Symmetry plays a fundamental role in aiding the visual system, to organize its environmental stimuli and to detect visual patterns of natural and artificial objects. Various kinds of symmetry exist, and we will discuss how internal symmetry due to textures influences the choice of direction in visual tasks. Two experiments are presented: the first, with human subjects, deals with the effect of textures on preferences for a pointing direction. The second emulates the performances obtained in the first through the use of an algorithm based on a physic metaphor. Results from both experiments are shown and comment.
Use of ICS in COPD: From Blockbuster Medicine to Precision Medicine
2017
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of mortality worldwide, whose burden is expected to increase in the next decades, because of numerous risk factors, including the aging of the population. COPD is both preventable and treatable by an effective management including risk factor reduction, prevention, assessment, and treatment of acute exacerbations and co-morbidities. The available agents approved for COPD treatment are long-acting or ultra-long-acting β2-agonists (LABAs) and long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMAs) bronchodilators, as well as inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) in combination with LABAs. ICS use has been restricted only to selected COPD patients by th…
A Multifactorial pattern for the understanding of the psychological development of the child with impaired hearing and its clinical-therapeutic impli…
2006
The Authors propose a multifactorial pattern for the understanding of the psychological development of the child with impaired hearing. According to this pattern the psychological development is determined by a variety of factors that can be regrouped intothree categories: • family features • aspects concerning the rehabilitation and the acoustic prosthesis • social and socio-environmental factors. In order to apply an effective action it is necessary to consider the interaction of the different factors and to adapt the therapeutic plan to that particular situation.

Measuring tourism from demand side
2017
This Paper proposes an analysis of tourism from the demand side, taking into account for both the total level of tourism demand produced by some European countries (domestic and outgoing) and its general tendency, and for the seasonal fluctuations which characterize many tourism-related aggregates. Tourist flows from the demand side at the European level are analyzed in the last decade, and a special focus on Italian tourism demand is provided, jointly with an analysis of its seasonal fluctuations. The analysis of general tendency of tourism demand and of the impacts of seasonality is a fundamental pre-requisite for the implementation of tourism policies.
Can Nationality Explain Economic Tourist Behaviour? A Thematic Review
2022
Numerous studies focus on the determinants of choices regarding tourism consumption utilizing several methods, different data sources, with diverse results. And the notion of considering nationality as an influential factor in tourism expenditure has been considered very often in the literature. This work examines this relationship between nationality and tourism expenditure by means of a thematic review approach. The results suggest the critical role played by nationality in understanding the determinants of tourism expenditure.
Wooden Surface Investigation: an Optical Approach Based on Shadow Moiré
2007
The interest in the mechanical behaviour of wood is a very important task due to the increasing role played by wood structures in modern architecture as well as its applicability in restoration of ancient buildings. The behaviour of wooden surfaces experiencing variable humidity conditions is of great importance both with concern to performances of wooden building’s structures and to ensure correct restoration and conservation of art works like wooden sculptures and panel paintings [1]. In literature there are only a few studies dealing with the influence of moisture on the physical properties of wood [1,2]. The characterization of wooden behaviour related to changes in the humidity level c…
Automatic differentiation of melanoma from dysplastic nevi.
2015
International audience; Malignant melanoma causes the majority of deaths related to skin cancer. Nevertheless, it is the most treatable one, depending on its early diagnosis. The early prognosis is a challenging task for both clinicians and dermatologist, due to the characteristic similarities of melanoma with other skin lesions such as dysplastic nevi. In the past decades, several computerized lesion analysis algorithms have been proposed by the research community for detection of melanoma. These algorithms mostly focus on differentiating melanoma from benign lesions and few have considered the case of melanoma against dysplastic nevi. In this paper, we consider the most challenging task a…
Numerical study of the Kadomtsev–Petviashvili equation and dispersive shock waves
2018
A detailed numerical study of the long time behaviour of dispersive shock waves in solutions to the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) I equation is presented. It is shown that modulated lump solutions emerge from the dispersive shock waves. For the description of dispersive shock waves, Whitham modulation equations for KP are obtained. It is shown that the modulation equations near the soliton line are hyperbolic for the KPII equation while they are elliptic for the KPI equation leading to a focusing effect and the formation of lumps. Such a behaviour is similar to the appearance of breathers for the focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the semiclassical limit.
