Clinical Benefits of Early Triptan Therapy for Migraine

2004

The introduction of the triptans brought advances in achieving complete and sustained pain resolution in migraine patients, compared with non-migraine-specific treatments. However, sustained pain-free rates for triptans recorded in many clinical trials are still relatively low. This may be due to study participants being treated late into the attack, when pain is already moderate or severe. Studies with almotriptan have shown that efficacy is enhanced when treatment is given early in a migraine attack while pain is still mild, compared with later administration when pain intensity is greater. Developments in our understanding of migraine pathophysiology provide a rationale for this phenome…

Heritability of corneal refraction and corneal astigmatism: a population-based twin study among 66- to 79-year-old female twins.

2012

. Purpose:  To examine the heritability of corneal refraction power (CR) and corneal astigmatism (AST) in older women. Methods:  Corneal refraction and AST were measured by IOL master in 52 monozygotic (MZ) and 47 dizygotic (DZ) female twin pairs aged 66–79 years. The relative contribution of genetic and environmental factors to individual differences in CR was estimated by applying an independent pathway model to the twin data and AST by intraclass correlations (ICC). Results:  For the right eye, mean CR was 44.58 dioptres (D) (standard deviation (SD) ±1.28) When comparing CR of the right and left eye between MZ and DZ, no significant difference was found. Mean AST was 0.77 D (SD ±0.44) wi…

Mobile platform for online processing of multimodal skin optical images: Using online Matlab server for processing remission, fluorescence and laser …

2015

Mobile platform for multimodal skin assessment has been developed. Different illumination sources allow switching between modalities. Diffuse reflectance spectral imaging is provided by five LEDs, fluorescence is excited by 405 nm LEDs, and laser speckle by 650 nm laser diode. Handheld, battery powered device includes all light sources and color camera with USB. The core of the system is Linux OS embedded microcontroller. USB, FTP and HTML with JavaScript combination is used to create standard image transfer and control interface. In combination with built in WiFi access point it allows online skin images storage and processing. It means that data processing algorithms are located and updat…

Evaluation of the Department of Neurosurgery of the Seoul National University Hospital

2013

The Department of Neurosurgery (DNS) of the Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH), belongs to the largest and oldest such institutions in Korea. Because of its growing reputation it is hardly surprising that the DNS draws visitor and scholars for clinical education and academic exchange from far beyond Korea. I myself visited the SNUH in February and March 2013. During this time I composed this evaluation in which I compare the DNS to my home Department at the Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz/Germany, as well as the situation of Neurosurgery in Korea and Germany in general. In the first part this evaluation summarizes data concerning equipment, staff and organizational structure, …

High-Speed Video Microscopy for Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Diagnosis: A Study of Ciliary Motility Variations with Time and Temperature

2021

Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la siguiente URL: https://www.mdpi.com/2075-4418/11/7/1301 Este artículo de investigación pertenece al número especial "Progress in Diagnosing and Managing Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia". Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare disease resulting from a defect in ciliary function that generates, among other issues, chronic upper and lower respiratory tract infections. European guidelines recommend studying ciliary function (pattern (CBP) and frequency (CBF)), together with characteristic clinical symptoms, as one of the definitive tests. However, there is no “gold standard”. The present study aims to use high-speed video microscopy to describe how CBF…

Japanese, Mediterranean and Argentinean diets and their potential roles in neurodegenerative diseases

2019

Environmental factors are responsible of cellular senescence and processes found in the development of cognitive disorders. The aim of this paper is to compare benefits of the Japanese, Mediterranean, and Argentinian Diet on the onset or prevention of senile dementia (SD) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Special focus was on the effects of specific compounds such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), antioxidants, and saturated and trans fatty acids. A high adherence to diets rich in PUFAs, monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and antioxidants may decrease the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases ; while the predominance of saturated and trans fatty acids possibly rises it.

Expression pattern of matrix metalloproteinases-2 and -9 and their tissue inhibitors in patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropat…

2021

Background: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a heterogeneous family of endopeptidases that play a role in many physiological functions, including the immune response. An imbalance between the activity of MMPs and their physiological tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) has been proposed in the pathophysiology of different autoimmune disorders. We aimed to assess the plasmatic levels of MMP-2, MMP-9, and their inhibitors TIMP-1 and -2 in patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). Subjects and methods: Twenty patients with CIDP and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled. Plasma concentrations of MMP-2, MMP-9, TIMP-1, and TIMP-2 were determined by the enzy…

Chromoendoscopy in Barrett's oesophagus: is cresyl violet the magic bullet?

2006

The endoscopic detection of Barrett’s epithelium remains challenging even for modern endoscopy. This is mainly due to the fact that Barrett’s epithelium is often patchy and can easily be overlooked by conventional endoscopy with random biopsies. Thus, chromoendoscopy and magnifying endoscopy were introduced to facilitate diagnosis of Barrett’s epithelium and Barrett’s associated neoplasias. Methylene blue-aided chromoendoscopy was firstly introduced by Canto et al. [1]. The authors could show that methylene blue selectively stains specialised columnar epithelium, which is pathognomonic for Barrett’s epithelium. In contrast, dysplastic areas revealed no or weaker staining due to changes in t…

NeXt for neuro-radiosurgery: A fully automatic approach for necrosis extraction in brain tumor MRI using an unsupervised machine learning technique

2017

Stereotactic neuro-radiosurgery is a well-established therapy for intracranial diseases, especially brain metastases and highly invasive cancers that are difficult to treat with conventional surgery or radiotherapy. Nowadays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most used modality in radiation therapy for soft-tissue anatomical districts, allowing for an accurate gross tumor volume (GTV) segmentation. Investigating also necrotic material within the whole tumor has significant clinical value in treatment planning and cancer progression assessment. These pathological necrotic regions are generally characterized by hypoxia, which is implicated in several aspects of tumor development and gro…
