Inflammation, genes and zinc in Alzheimer's disease.

2007

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a heterogeneous and progressive neurodegenerative disease which in Western society mainly accounts for clinical dementia. AD has been linked to inflammation and metal biological pathway. Neuro-pathological hallmarks are senile plaques, resulting from the accumulation of several proteins and an inflammatory reaction around deposits of amyloid, a fibrillar protein, Abeta, product of cleavage of a much larger protein, the beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP) and neurofibrillary tangles. Amyloid deposition, due to the accumulation of Abeta peptide, is the main pathogenetic mechanism. Inflammation clearly occurs in pathologically vulnerable regions of AD and several i…

The biological activity of bacteriophage DNA, prepared by the cationic detergent dilution technique

1975

Abstract The preparation of phage lambda DNA infecting E. coli K 12 with cationic detergent is described. This DNA infects E. coli spheroblasts with the same efficiency as DNA prepared by phenol methods.

vacA genotypes in oral cavity and Helicobacter pylori seropositivity among adults without dyspepsia.

2010

Objective: The aims of this research were to determine the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori and its vacA genotypes in oral cavity in persons without dyspepsia and to establish the association between the presence of H. pylori in oral cavity and oral hygiene. The seroprevalence of anti-H. pylori antibodies and its associated factors were analyzed too. Study design: For the study, 200 adults without dyspepsia symptoms were selected. Dental plaque and saliva samples from each subject were obtained. H. pylori detection in oral samples was carried out by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and for vacA genotyping a semi-nested and nested PCR was used. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) w…

The effect of postsurgical administration of a selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitor on the healing of intrabony defects following treatment with ena…

2003

Regenerative treatment with enamel matrix proteins (EMD) has been shown to promote regeneration in intrabony periodontal defects. However, up to now various postoperative regimens such as the routine administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were often used in combination with enamel matrix proteins. Therefore, it cannot be excluded that the results might have been influenced by the effect of the postoperative medication. The aim of this randomized, controlled, blinded, clinical investigation was to determine the effect of postsurgical administration of a selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitor on the healing of intrabony periodontal defects following regenerative period…

Comparative efficacy of aloe vera mouthwash and chlorhexidine on periodontal health: A randomized controlled trial

2016

Background: With introduction of many herbal medicines, dentistry has recently evidenced shift of approach for treating many inflammatory oral diseases by using such modalities. Aloe vera is one such product exhibiting multiple benefits and has gained considerable importance in clinical research recently. Aims: To compare the efficacy of Aloevera and Chlorhexidine mouthwash on Periodontal Health. Material and Methods: Thirty days randomized controlled trial was conducted among 390 dental students. The students were randomized into two intervention groups namely Aloe Vera (AV) chlorhexidine group (CHX) and one control (placebo) group. Plaque index and gingival index was recorded for each par…

Platform switch versus platform match in the posterior mandible – 1-year results of a multicentre randomized clinical trial.

2014

Objective The purpose of this ongoing randomized study was to assess differences in bone level changes and success rates using implants supporting single crowns in the posterior mandible either with platform matched or platform switched abutments. Material and Methods Patients aged 18 and above, missing at least two teeth in the posterior mandible and with a natural tooth mesial to the most proximal implant site were enrolled. Randomization followed implant placement. Definitive restorations were placed after a minimum transgingival healing period of 8 weeks. Changes in crestal bone level from surgery and loading (baseline) to 12-month post-loading were radiographically measured. Implant su…

Intravascular Ultrasound-based Imaging Modalities for Tissue Characterisation

2014

Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in the developed world. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is a widely used imaging modality providing complementary diagnostic information to angiography regarding the vessel wall of the coronary arteries. IVUS has been used for assessment of ambiguous angiographic lesions, evaluation of new interventional devices and in atherosclerosis progression-regression trials. However, the standard gray-scale IVUS has limited value for the accurate identification of specific plaque components. This limitation has been partially over- come by introduction of new IVUS-based imaging methods such as: virtual histology IVUS, iMAP…

Non invasive imaging of coronary arteries with 64-slice CT and 1.5T MRI: challenging invasive techniques

2007

Non-invasive coronary artery imaging challenges any diagnostic modality, because of the complex and tortuous anatomy and cardiac contraction and respiration. Therefore, non-invasive coronary imaging requires high spatial and temporal resolution. Our purpose is to discuss the feasible applications in coronary imaging of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Multi-slice Computed Tomography (MSCT). Focus will be devoted to potential indications and clinical impact of MSCT because of the fast development and the important results recently reported, in particular with the recent introduction of 64-slice equipments. MSCT of the coronary arteries is a promising imaging modality for the assessment of coro…

Purified Membrane-Containing Procapsids of Bacteriophage PRD1 Package the Viral Genome

2009

Icosahedral-tailed double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) bacteriophages and herpesviruses translocate viral DNA into a preformed procapsid in an ATP-driven reaction by a packaging complex that operates at a portal vertex. A similar packaging system operates in the tailless dsDNA phage PRD1 (Tectiviridae family), except that there is an internal membrane vesicle in the procapsid. The unit-length linear dsDNA genome with covalently linked 5'-terminal proteins enters the procapsid through a unique vertex. Two small integral membrane proteins, P20 and P22, provide a conduit for DNA translocation. The packaging machinery also contains the packaging ATPase P9 and the packaging efficiency factor P6. Here we…
