Abstract Aconitine intoxication by ingestion of Aconitum roots can lead to ventricular tachycardia and cardiac arrest and provides an example of the potential effect of self‐medication. Educational campaigns should be implemented to contain acute intoxications caused by herbal‐derived products.
Successful treatment of paraquat poisoning: activated charcoal per os and "continuous hemoperfusion".

AbstractIngestion of paraquat results in an extremely dangerous poisoning. The first aim is to clear the gastrointestinal tract by inducing emesis and performing gastric/gut lavage; as much activated charcoal as possible should be administered per os and as quickly as possible. The best measure to eliminate paraquat from blood and tissue is hemoperfusion with coated activated charcoal; it has to be performed in the sense of “continuous hemoperfusion” about 8 h/d over a period of 2–3 weeks. These measures give a chance to lower the lethality of paraquat poisoning.

The article concerns potential harmful effects of exposure to lead. Although the occurrence of severe lead poisoning has receded in several countries, occupational exposure resulting in moderate and clinically symptomatic toxicity is still common. Reliability of a decision-tree model in predicting occupational lead poisoning in a group of highly exposed workers

Objective This study aimed to provide the toxicological profile of some lead-exposed workers and obtain a predictive model for lead poisoning. Methods Data regarding external and absorbed exposure were collected from 585 subjects employed in ten metallurgical production departments. Airborne lead concentration, blood lead level (BLL), cumulative blood lead index (CBLI), urine delta-aminolevulinic acid (DALA), age, workplace/section, exposure period, and whether reported lead poisoning as occupational disease were examined using ANOVA, and, post-ANOVA, Pearson correlation matrix, PCA (principal component analysis), decision-tree modeling, and logistic modeling. Incidence of Staphylococcus aureus in meals from cafeterias

A study to determine the incidence of Staphylococccus aureus in 705 meals from several cafeterias in Valencia, Spain was undertaken. Out of the 705 studied meals, 81 samples (I I. I %) had coagulase positive staphylococci with a range of S. aureus from 100 to 53000 cfu/g. me four highest values (> l0,ooO S. aureus &/g) were obtained with Russian type salad, meatballs, chicken croquettes and salad. These products involved more handling stages. These data show that food handlers may contribute to food poisoning and that there are some handling practices that require more attention.

Objective. To describe the epidemiology of norovirus (NV) and Salmonella gastroenteritis outbreaks in Catalonia between 15 October 2004 and 30 October 2005. Material and methods. Epidemiological data were obtained from outbreak reports. The aetiologic agent was investigated by culture for enteric bacteria, enzyme immunoanalyses, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and molecular epidemiology genotyping for NV. A patient with severe organophosphate intoxication received Neostigmine 1 mg IV during the intermediate syndrome. This dose resulted clinically and neurophysiologically in a marked deterioration of neuro-muscular transmission. This effect of neostigmine on the neuromuscular block during the intermediate syndrome (deterioration) differs from its effect on a similar pattern (improvement), which is seen in the delayed neuropathy following organophosphate exposure. The administration of therapeutic doses of cholinesterase inhibitors in patients with a reduced safety margin due to inhibition of endplate acetylcholinesterase may be dangerous.
