Isolation and Characterization of Novosphingobium sp. Strain MT1, a Dominant Polychlorophenol-Degrading Strain in a Groundwater Bioremediation System

ABSTRACT A high-rate fluidized-bed bioreactor has been treating polychlorophenol-contaminated groundwater in southern Finland at 5 to 8°C for over 6 years. We examined the microbial diversity of the bioreactor using three 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA)-based methods: denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, length heterogeneity-PCR analysis, and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. The molecular study revealed that the process was dependent on a stable bacterial community with low species diversity. Speciation of vanadium in urban, industrial and volcanic soils by a modified Tessier method

Vanadium (V) concentrations in industrial, urban and volcanic soils were sequentially extracted using a modified Tessier's method. The voltammetric technique was used to determine V concentrations in solutions obtained from the various extraction steps. At the reference stations, the V concentrations (sum of four individual fractions) in soils ranged from 0.72 to 0.24 g kg(-1) dry weight (d.w.) with a mean value of 0.18 g kg(-1) d.w. We examined parasite populations and communities in the Mediterranean sentinel fish species, Mullus barbatus, sampled at a small-scale PCB gradient at the shelf sediments off Catalonian coasts of the Western Mediterranean. A recurrent feature at both the population and community level was the differentiation of the samples along the increasing PCB levels simultaneously registered in the sediments. Solid-phase extraction in multi-residue pesticide analysis of water

The determination of pesticides in water is fundamental to the solution of environmental problems as natural waters are usually contaminated with a large number of pesticides. The selection of an isolation and/or concentration technique depends largely on the class of pesticides to be determined. It is often necessary to determine simultaneously a wide variety of compounds in a water sample. Application of solid-phase extraction techniques offers a solution. The mechanisms of solid-phase extraction, types of sorbents and their application to multi-residue pesticide analysis are reviewed.

Imputation Strategies for Missing Data in Environmental Time Series for An Unlucky Situation

After a detailed review of the main specific solutions for treatment of missing data in environmental time series, this paper deals with the unlucky situation in which, in an hourly series, missing data immediately follow an absolutely anomalous period, for which we do not have any similar period to use for imputation. A tentative multivariate and multiple imputation is put forward and evaluated; it is based on the possibility, typical of environmental time series, to resort to correlations or physical laws that characterize relationships between air pollutants.

Structural invariants for the prediction of relative toxicities of polychloro dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans

Multivariate models are reported that can predict the relative toxicity of compounds with severe environmental impact, namely polychloro dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs). Multiple linear regression analysis (MLR) and partial least square projections of latent variables (PLS) show the usefulness of graph-theoretical descriptors, mainly topological charge indices (TCIs), in these series. The general trends of the group are correctly reproduced and better results are presented than have previously been published. In general, the more toxic compounds exhibit more symmetric molecular structures.

Trace metal concentrations were measured in different tissues of Sabella spallanzanii, Styela plicata and Mytilus galloprovincialis collected in Termini Imerese harbor, located in Sicily (Italy), in order to evaluate the potential use of these species as bioindicators. The higher bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) were calculated in tube of Sabella spallanzanii, except for As which shows the higher BAF in branchial crown of the same specie. An urgent need exists to assess the exposure of fish to pharmaceuticals. The aim of the present study was to assess the uptake and metabolism of waterborne pharmaceuticals in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). A further objective was to determine the possibility of monitoring exposure to low levels of pharmaceuticals by bile assays. Rainbow trout were exposed for 10 d under flow-through conditions to mixtures of five pharmaceuticals (diclofenac, naproxen, ibuprofen, bisoprolol, and carbamazepine) at high and low concentrations.
