On thermal behaviour of DMC catalysts for ring opening polymerization of epoxides

Abstract The thermoanalytical studies of two types of the double metal cyanide catalysts were carried out. The identity of the catalysts was characterized by an elemental analysis and FTIR. The thermoanalytical examinations performed with the use of TG-DSC, EGA-FTIR, EGA-MS shed new light on views of the bonding of the ligands in the DMC. The chemical justification of the processes responsible for the TG/DSC steps was proposed. Several organic ligand complexing states were found in both types of catalysts. Electrostatic Anchoring of Mn4 Single-Molecule Magnets onto Chemically Modified Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes

Two different routes that enable the electrostatic grafting of cationic single-molecule magnets (SMMs) onto the surface of chemically modified anionic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) are described. The chemical nature and physical properties of the resulting hybrids are discussed on the basis of a complete battery of experimental techniques. The data show that the chemical nature of the SMM unit remains intact, while its magnetic response is significantly affected by the grafting process, which is likely due to surface effects.

Abstract The kinetics of the oxidation of malonic acid and (its substituted compounds, methyl-, ethyl-, butyl- and benzyl-malonic acid) by ceric ions has been studied at 20.0 °C in the absence and the presence of the surfactant N-tetradecyl-N,N-dimethylamine oxide (C 14 DMAO). The addition of increasing amounts of C 14 DMAO influences the rate of the redox process to an extent that significantly depends on the hydrophobicity of the reducing species. Carbon nanomaterials are attractive candidates for drug delivery due to their high surface area, ease of functionalisation and biocompatibility. This work describes the spectroscopic monitoring of the loading capacity of oxidised carbon nanohorns for two cationic porphyrins. Addition of the COOH functionalised carbon nanohorns to both meso-tetra(4-N-methylpyridyl) free base (H2TMPyP4) and platinum (PtTMPyP4) porphyrin in aqueous solution results in hypochromism of the Soret band and quenching of the porphyrin emission. Supramolecular assembly: Spherical and stable hybrid assemblies based on a cationic polymer with spermine side chains and an anionic Gd(3+)-containing polyoxometalate cluster (GdW) are prepared by electrostatic interaction. The T1-weighted MRI performance of GdW is enhanced about three times in the assemblies; meanwhile, the assemblies show good biocompatibility, which enables them to be promising candidates for MRI contrast agents.

A series of heterobifunctional mesogenic biphenyl esters having two different polymerizable groups, i.e., acryl and diacetylene groups, were synthesized and their thermal behaviors and polymerization investigated. All compounds showed enantiotropic transitions. Under POM, highly birefringent focal-conic fan textures appeared on heating and cooling from the isotropic melt. Compounds 6−8 having a butyl spacer between a biphenyl and a diacetylene group exhibited LC phases even at room temperature.
