Supramolecular polymerization of sulfated dendritic peptide amphiphiles into multivalent L-selectin binders

2021

The synthesis of a sulfate-modified dendritic peptide amphiphile and its self-assembly into one-dimensional rod-like architectures in aqueous medium is reported. The influence of the ionic strength on the supramolecular polymerization was probed via circular dichroism spectroscopy and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. Physiological salt concentrations efficiently screen the charges of the dendritic building block equipped with eight sulfate groups and trigger the formation of rigid supramolecular polymers. Since multivalent sulfated supramolecular structures mimic naturally occurring L-selectin ligands, the corresponding affinity was evaluated using a competitive SPR binding assay…

Structural performances of pultruded GFRP emergency structures – Part 2: Full-scale experimental testing

2019

Abstract This paper presents an experimental testing of a pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) structure used for emergency applications continuing the discussion presented in a previous paper (part 1) where the study of the characteristics of material and elements are presented. First, the design of the composite structure and components and the evaluation of the structural behavior by means of numerical and analytical approach according to current regulatory codes are described. In this frame, the global and local response was observed according to load paths deriving from the design loads at limit states. Then, the experimental test on a full-scale 2D model is presented at diff…

Tailored conjugated polymer Langmuir-Schafer thin films in sensing transistors

2004

Organic Thin Film Transistors (OTFTs) have been fabricated, in a standard bottom gate configuration, with Langmuir-Schäfer (LS) or cast thin films of regioregular poly[1,4-(2,5-dioctyloxyphenylene)-2,5-thiophene], synthesized via an organometallic protocol, as active layers. The transistors electrical characterization has evidenced that LS based devices exhibit better performance level than cast film ones. Appealing perspectives for newly substituted conjugated polymers in OTFT sensing devices are discussed.

Ester-functionalized poly(3-alkylthiophene) copolymers : synthesis, physicochemical characterization and performance in bulk heterojunction organic s…

2013

Abstract The introduction of functional moieties in the donor polymer (side chains) offers a potential pathway toward selective modification of the nanomorphology of conjugated polymer:fullerene active layer blends applied in bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaics, pursuing morphology control and solar cell stability. For this purpose, two types of poly(3-alkylthiophene) random copolymers, incorporating different amounts (10/30/50%) of ester-functionalized side chains, were efficiently synthesized using the Rieke method. The solar cell performance of the functionalized copolymers was evaluated and compared to the pristine P3HT:PCBM system. It was observed that the physicochemical and opt…

Polymer-based symmetric electrochromic devices

1999

Abstract The fact that conjugated polymers repeatedly undergo electrochemical doping/undoping processes, which are accompained by color changes, makes these materials very attractive, and much effort has been devoted to their use in advanced devices. There is renewed interest in electroactive polymers that reversibly undergo both p- and n-doping because of their potential application in symmetric electrochemical devices. We employed fused molecules, dithienothiophenes, as monomers to obtain polymers with a narrow band gap suitable for n- and p-doping. The performance results of two symmetric electrochromic devices having as electrodes both poly(dithieno[3,4-b:3',4'-d]thiophene) (pDTT1) and …

Thermal sensor based on a polymer nanofilm

2016

In this work, we have developed a thermal sensor based on poly(3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanofilms as thermoelectric material. The PEDOT nanofilms have been synthesized by the electrochemical polymerization method. The thicknesses of the films were around 120 nm. The doping level of PEDOT was controlled by chemical reduction using hydrazine. The achieved Seebeck coeficient is 40 uV/K. A PEDOT nanofilm was integrated into an electronic circuit that amplifies the voltage originated from the Seebeck effect. The temperature increment produced by a fingerprint touching the film is enough to switch on a light emitting diode. Peer Reviewed

Stress-Strain Law for Confined Concrete with Hardening or Softening Behavior

2013

This paper provides a new general stress-strain law for concrete confined by steel, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP), or fiber reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM), obtained by a suitable modification of the well-known Sargin’s curve for steel confined concrete. The proposed law is able to reproduce stress-strain curve of any shape, having both hardening or softening behavior, by using a single closed-form simple algebraic expression with constant coefficients. The coefficients are defined on the basis of the stress and the tangent modulus of the confined concrete in three characteristic points of the curve, thus being related to physical meaningful parameters. It will be shown that if the v…

Thermal-, pressure- and light-induced spin-crossover behviour in the two-dimensional Hofman-like coordination polymer [Fe(3-Clpy)2Pd(CN)4]

2013

The thermal spin-crossover behaviour, photoexcitation and subsequent relaxation, as well as the pressure-induced spincrossover behaviour at 298 K are discussed for the non-porous two-dimensional Hofmann-like coordination polymer [Fe(3-Clpy)(2)Pd(CN)(4)] (1). The title compound undergoes a two-step, cooperative thermal-induced SCO with critical temperatures T-c1(down arrow) = 159.6 K and T-c1(up arrow) = 164.5 K for the first step and T-c2(down arrow) = 141.4 K and T-c2(up arrow) = 148.4 K for the second step. Irradiation of the low-spin state with green light (514 nm) at 10 K induced the photoexcitation of around 60% of the iron(II) centres to the high-spin state (LIESST effect). The subseq…

Metallophilic interactions in polymeric group 11 thiols

2016

Three polymeric group 11 transition metal polymers featuring metallophilic interactions were obtained directly via self-assembly of metal ions and 4-pyridinethiol ligands. In the cationic [Cu2(S-pyH)4]n2+ with [ZnCl4]n2− counterion (1) and in the neutral [Ag(S-py) (S-pyH)]n (2) 4-pyridinethiol (S-pyH) and its deprotonated form (S-py) are coordinated through the sulfur atom. Both ligands are acting as bridging ligands linking the metal centers together. In the solid state, the gold(I) polymer [Au(S-pyH)2]Cl (3) consists of the repeating cationic [Au(S-pyH)2]+ units held together by aurophilic interactions. Compound 1 is a zig-zag chain, whereas the metal chains in the structures of 2 and 3 a…
