Inclusive Design for Alzheimer’s Disease: Low-cost Treatments, Design and ICT

2019

Inability to acquire new memories, difficulty to remember recent events and to recognize objects, places and people, visual-spatial disorientation, these are some of the disorders with which who is affected by neurological diseases must learn to live with. In a continuously evolving society, where the decreasing birth rate and the drops in mortality are consistent, the job of Architecture is precisely to interpret the requirements and needs of people who have lost the canonical relationship with the world and give them the possibility to recover it or maintain it through communication channels that use their remaining ability to understand. The indoors and outdoors acquire a “prosthesis fun…

Settore ICAR/12 - Tecnologia Dell'Architettura

The Sustainability Factor: How Much Do Pension Expenditures Improve in Spain?

2020

The reform of 2013 represented a qualitative leap in the reform of the Spanish pension system. Unlike its predecessors, it introduced two automatic resetting mechanisms similar to those of other European countries. The first is the sustainability factor, scheduled to come into effect in 2019 but delayed until 2023, and its ultimate reversal cannot be ruled out. The objective of this study was to quantify the savings, or the lowest expenditure, that can be achieved in the Spanish public contributory pension system by applying it. These savings are measured in terms of cash&mdash

Updated insights into the mechanism of action and clinical profile of the immunoadjuvant QS-21: A review

2019

Background Vaccine adjuvants are compounds that significantly enhance/prolong the immune response to a co-administered antigen. The limitations of the use of aluminium salts that are unable to elicite cell responses against intracellular pathogens such as those causing malaria, tuberculosis, or AIDS, have driven the development of new alternative adjuvants such as QS-21, a triterpene saponin purified from Quillaja saponaria. Purpose The aim of this review is to attempt to clarify the mechanism of action of QS-21 through either receptors or signaling pathways in vitro and in vivo with special emphasis on the co-administration with other immunostimulants in new adjuvant formulations, called a…

Immunologic Effects of Interferon

1990

Interferons can be defined as a family of induced proteins sharing the capacity to exert pleiotropic effects on cell functions and to render cells resistant to virus infection. They are activating genes coding for a number of enzymes, most of which have not yet been characterized, and also by enhancing the synthesis of cell surface components. This enables interferons to modulate the immune response at different levels. This article will focus on the effects of interferon on antigen presentation, regulation of the immune response, activation of macrophage functions, and on its role in the pathogenesis of some diseases.

Changes in CD4+ cells’ miRNA expression following exposure to HIV-1

2010

Background: Micro RNAs (miRNAs) inhibit HIV-1 expression by either modulating host innate immunity or by directly interfering with viral mRNAs. Here, we investigated the miRNA profile that discriminates different classes of HIV-1-infected patients from multiple-exposed uninfected individuals. Methods: The expression levels of 377 miRNAs were selectively analysed in CD4+ cells isolated from whole blood of HIV-1 elite LTNP (eLTNP), naive, and multiply exposed uninfected individuals (MEUs). MiRNA extraction was performed by the mir Vana™ miRNA Isolation Kit (Ambion), and their expression was subsequently examined by real-time PCR-based arrays. The expression of miRNAs was also determined in pr…

¿Implicar a los estudiantes en la modificación de rúbricas influye sobre su percepción de validez?

2019

[EN] Oral presentation is one of the fundamental competences in the teaching-learning process for most of the university students and rubrics could be used as a useful tool in this process. Therefore, the main objective was to determine the perception of validity and utility of a rubric for students of the Physical Education and Sports Sciences degree, considering also if they were involved or not in the rubric’s development. 115 students participated, in two groups. The teacher of the subject gave to both groups the same rubric to evaluate their oral presentations. So, one of the groups modified and prepared the rubric´s elements. After oral presentations, both groups completed a rubric's …

Cloned T helper cells reverting to a resting state develop increasing sensitivity in their antigen-mediated interaction with accessory cells.

1988

A cloned murine T cell line, KIII5, specific for the polypeptide poly-L(Tyr,Glu)-poly-D,L-Ala--poly-L-Lys [(T,G)-A--L] was compared at different stages after antigenic stimulation with respect to the conditions required for the reinduction of growth by varying concentrations of antigen presented on different types of accessory cells (AC). We show that the dose of antigen necessary for inducing half maximal proliferation in the presence of splenic AC shifts to considerably lower concentrations when the T cell blasts revert to a resting state (100 micrograms/ml on day 7 to 10 micrograms/ml on day 21-35). During the same time period the expression of interleukin 2 (IL2) receptor and the reacti…

New development opportunities for the craft brewing segment: the case study of a micro-malthouse

2017

In Italy in the past few years, the number of small breweries penetrating the craft beer sector has grown exponentially. Craft producers intend to give a strong added value and a local character to their production in different ways. One of these is the use of malt derived from small batches of local cereals and pseudo cereals. The aim of this study is the assessment of investment profitability, through a cost-benefit analysis (CBA), for a compact and a modular micro-malting plant in Sicily (Southern Italy). The CBA for a micro-malthouse was carried out considering both installation and operating costs. Net present value (NPV), discounted benefit-cost ratio (DBCR) and internal rate of retur…
