Clinico-Immunological Status and Neurocognitive Function of Perinatally Acquired HIV-Positive Children on cART: A Cross-Sectional Correlational Study…

2020

Despite the undisputed benefits of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), perinatally acquired human immunodeficiency virus (PHIV) children on treatment often present with a spectrum of neurological deficits known as HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment. Even higher CD4 cell count does not seem to prevent the development of neurocognitive impairment in children with PHIV. While CD4 cell count has shown to have the greatest prognostic value, its association with neurocognitive abilities remains to be clarified. This study aimed at determining the correlation between plasma CD4+ lymphocyte and neurocognitive function in children with PHIV on cART. In total, 152 purposively recruited h…

Prognostic and Predictive Significance of Pharmacogenetic Analysis in Patients with Carcinomas of Unknown Primary (CAUP)

2012

ABSTRACT Purpose To investigate the prognostic/predictive significance of the expression of BRCA1, ERCC1, RRM1, TOPO-I, TOPO-IIa, TOPO-IIb, TXR1 TYMS and HIF1a mRNA in patients with Carcinomas of Unknown Primary (CaUP). Material and methods Ninety-three patients with CaUP and available tumoral samples diagnosed in three institutions were included in the study. The mRNA levels of the target genes were determined by quantitative real-time PCR from microdissected cells derived from patients' tumoral specimens. β-actin and PGK1 were used as reference genes. Results Successful amplification of at least one gene was achieved in all samples. BRCA1, ERCC1, HIF1a and TXR1 were amplified in all sampl…

TAKING A LOOK AT CHINESE PEDAGOGY IN SHUXUE [MATHEMATICS]: A DIALOGUE BETWEEN CULTURES TO APPROACH ARITHMETIC AT FIRST AND SECOND ITALIAN PRIMARY CLA…

2013

The purpose of this paper is to analyze two cases of task design about straws and word problems in different cultural traditions (the Eastern and Western one). By means of two paradigmatic examples developed in Italy, we aim at showing, on the one hand, the effects and advantages of intercultural dialogue and, on the other hand, the need to take into account and to respect culturally rooted pedagogies, avoiding uncritical transfer from one culture to another. This perspective implies a reciprocal respect of the different approach modalities and hence a continuous back and forth between the practical and the deeply related theoretical dimension

EphrinB2 controls vessel pruning through STAT1-JNK3 signalling

2014

Angiogenesis produces primitive vascular networks that need pruning to yield hierarchically organized and functional vessels. Despite the critical importance of vessel pruning to vessel patterning and function, the mechanisms regulating this process are not clear. Here we show that EphrinB2, a well-known player in angiogenesis, is an essential regulator of endothelial cell death and vessel pruning. This regulation depends upon phosphotyrosine-EphrinB2 signalling repressing c-jun N-terminal kinase 3 activity via STAT1. JNK3 activation causes endothelial cell death. In the absence of JNK3, hyaloid vessel physiological pruning is impaired, associated with abnormal persistence of hyaloid vessel…

Cytogenetic study of angiosarcoma of the breast.

1994

Angiosarcoma of the breast is quite rare, and the development of cutaneous angiosarcoma after segmental mastectomy and radiation therapy is even less common. A cytogenetic analysis of a mammary angiosarcoma arising in a breast after previous irradiation and segmental mastectomy for infiltrating ductal carcinoma revealed multiple clonal rearrangements involving chromosomes X, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 15, 17, 20, and 22. No cytogenetically analyzed angiosarcomas of the breast have been reported before. Genes Chromosom Cancer 10:210–212 (1994). © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Nutraceuticals and functional foods for the control of plasma cholesterol levels. An intersociety position paper

2018

Current evidence shows that cholesterol management either reduces the likelihood of cardiovascular disease (CVD) or slows down its progression. Hence, it is important that all health professionals make appropriate use of all the available intervention strategies to control risk factors: from dietary improvement and positive lifestyle changes to the use of functional foods, food supplements, and drugs. This review examines the effect of the most frequently occurring cholesterol-lowering substances in functional foods or in supplements across Europe, namely plant sterols and stanols, monacolin K found in red yeast rice, berberine and beta-glucans. We conclude that currently available suppleme…

Causes of and prevention strategies for hepatocellular carcinoma.

2012

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a challenging malignancy of global importance. It is associated with a high rate of mortality and its prevalence in the United States and in Western Europe is increasing. Cirrhosis is the strongest and the most common known risk factor for HCC, usually due to hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections. However, different lines of evidence identify in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) a possible relevant risk factor for occurrence of HCC. Given the continuing increase in the prevalence of obesity and diabetes, the incidence of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis-related HCC may also be expected to increase, and a potential role of behav…

Key competences and plurilingual education in the Valencian Region (Spain) : a curricular analysis of Primary Education

2020

The purpose of this work is to study the level of transversality of key competences in Primary Education in the Valencian Community. To this end, an analysis of the Decree 108/2014 cur-rently in effect will be carried out, along with determining the frequency with which each competence is worked on during this stage of education. The data obtained will be interpreted bearing in mind plurilingual programs and, more specifically, the basis of the methodological needs that are pursued in CLIL, the approach to teaching non-linguistic areas through a foreign language. Generally, the findings point to a lack of transversality in some of the competences, one of them being the linguistic competence…

Role of curcumin in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension treatment: A new therapeutic possibility

2013

The idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension is a complex disease that mainly affects pulmonary arterial circulation. This undergoes a remodeling with subsequent reduction of flow in the small pulmonary arteries. Because of this damage an increased vascular resistance gradually develops, and over time it carries out in heart failure. The inflammatory process is a key element in this condition, mediated by various cytokines. The inflammatory signal induces activation of NF-κB, and prompts TGF-β-related signaling pathway. Clinical evolution leads to progressive debilitation, greatly affecting the patient quality of life. The actual therapeutic approaches, are few and expensive, and include …
