The histology of brain tumors for 67 331 children and 671 085 adults diagnosed in 60 countries during 2000-2014: a global, population-based study (CO…

2021

Abstract Background Global variations in survival for brain tumors are very wide when all histological types are considered together. Appraisal of international differences should be informed by the distribution of histology, but little is known beyond Europe and North America. Methods The source for the analysis was the CONCORD database, a program of global surveillance of cancer survival trends, which includes the tumor records of individual patients from more than 300 population-based cancer registries. We considered all patients aged 0-99 years who were diagnosed with a primary brain tumor during 2000-2014, whether malignant or nonmalignant. We presented the histology distribution of th…

Long-term population-based risks of breast cancer after childhood cancer

2008

Previous studies have reported substantially increased risks of breast cancer among survivors of childhood cancer at 10–20 years posttreatment. Whether these excess risks are sustained beyond 40 years of age when general population incidence of breast cancer begins its steep increase is largely unknown. We quantified the risk of breast cancer in adult female survivors with considerably more survivors followed-up beyond 40 years of age than previously available. Standardized Incidence Ratios (SIR), Excess Absolute Risks (EAR), and cumulative incidence were calculated within a population-based cohort of 8,093 female survivors of childhood cancer. Poisson regression models were used to model S…

Primary umbilical endometrioma: Analyzing the pathogenesis of endometriosis from an unusual localization

2015

Abstract Objective This report presents a rare case of symptomatic primary umbilical endometriosis and reviews the literature on the topic with the aim to clarify some questions on the origin of endometriosis. Case report A 33-year-old woman with cyclic umbilical bleeding was found to have umbilical endometriosis. She had no history of pelvic or abdominal surgery. There was no past history of endometriosis or endometriosis-associated symptoms. An omphalectomy was performed after explorative laparoscopy to carefully inspect the abdominopelvic cavity and assess any coexisting pelvic endometriotic lesions. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of umbilical endometriosis. Conclusion …

The Cohort of Long-term Survivors at the German Childhood Cancer Registry

2008

Background With the increasing number of long-term survivors among patients diagnosed with cancer during childhood, questions concerning late effects have become a major research topic. To ascertain late effects, it is necessary to contact former patients. An essential requirement for such studies is a long-term surveillance (LTS) of former childhood cancer patients in their adolescence and their adulthood. The paper describes the role of the German Childhood Cancer Registry (GCCR) in LTS. A cohort of long-term survivors has been built up over the years. The characteristics of this LTS cohort and strategies for further improvement of LTS will be presented. Patients and methods Since 1980 th…

Rank two aCM bundles on the del Pezzo fourfold of degree 6 and its general hyperplane section

2018

International audience; In the present paper we completely classify locally free sheaves of rank 2 with vanishing intermediate cohomology modules on the image of the Segre embedding $\mathbb{P}^2$ x $\mathbb{P}^2 \subseteq \mathbb{P}^8$ and its general hyperplane sections.Such a classification extends similar already known results regarding del Pezzo varieties with Picard numbers 1 and 3 and dimension at least 3.

SLIT's Prevention of the Allergic March.

2018

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The progression of atopic disorders from atopic dermatitis in infants to allergic rhinitis and asthma in children, adolescents, and adults defines the allergy march. Allergen immunotherapy is the only causal treatment altering the immunological mechanism underlying the allergic diseases. The sublingual administration route is more acceptable than the subcutaneous one in pediatric age. RECENT FINDINGS: Several studies show the efficacy and safety profile of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) for the treatment of respiratory allergy diseases, but few data are available on its effect of primary and secondary prevention of allergic disease. The purpose of this manuscript is to r…

Influence of DNA damage and repair upon the risk of treatment related leukemia

2008

Therapy-related myelodysplasia and acute myeloid leukemia (t-MDS/AML) are malignancies occurring after exposure to chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. Several studies have addressed cumulative dose, dose intensity and exposure to specific agents of preceding cytotoxic therapy in relation to the risk of developing such leukemia. Since only a small percentage of patients exposed to cytotoxic therapy develop t-MDS/AML, it has been suggested that some genetic predisposition may be involved, specifically associated to polymorphisms in certain genes involved in chemotherapy/radiotherapy response - fundamentally genes intervening in drug detoxification and DNA synthesis and repair. A review is made …

Complete Hemocyanin Subunit Sequences of the Hunting SpiderCupiennius salei

2002

Hemocyanins are large copper-containing respiratory proteins found in many arthropod species. Scorpions and orthognath spiders possess a highly conserved 4 x 6-mer hemocyanin that consists of at least seven distinct subunit types (termed a to g). However, many "modern" entelegyne spiders such as Cupiennius salei differ from the standard arachnid scheme and have 2 x 6-mer hemocyanins. Here we report the complete primary structure of the 2 x 6-mer hemocyanin of C. salei as deduced from cDNA sequencing, gel electrophoresis, and matrix-assisted laser desorption spectroscopy. Six distinct subunit types (1 through 6) and three additional allelic sequences were identified. Each 1 x 6-mer half-mole…

A Derivation of the Vlasov-Stokes System for Aerosol Flows from the Kinetic Theory of Binary Gas Mixtures

2016

In this short paper, we formally derive the thin spray equation for a steady Stokes gas, i.e. the equation consists in a coupling between a kinetic (Vlasov type) equation for the dispersed phase and a (steady) Stokes equation for the gas. Our starting point is a system of Boltzmann equations for a binary gas mixture. The derivation follows the procedure already outlined in [Bernard-Desvillettes-Golse-Ricci, arXiv:1608.00422 [math.AP]] where the evolution of the gas is governed by the Navier-Stokes equation.
