Fair Kernel Learning
2017
New social and economic activities massively exploit big data and machine learning algorithms to do inference on people’s lives. Applications include automatic curricula evaluation, wage determination, and risk assessment for credits and loans. Recently, many governments and institutions have raised concerns about the lack of fairness, equity and ethics in machine learning to treat these problems. It has been shown that not including sensitive features that bias fairness, such as gender or race, is not enough to mitigate the discrimination when other related features are included. Instead, including fairness in the objective function has been shown to be more efficient.
Interaction of the Vibrio cholerae cytolysin (VCC) with cholesterol, some cholesterol esters, and cholesterol derivatives: a TEM study.
2002
The Vibrio cholerae cytolysin (VCC) 63-kDa monomer has been shown to interact in aqueous suspension with cholesterol microcystals to produce a ring/pore-like heptameric oligomer approximately 8 nm in outer diameter. Transmission electron microscopy data were produced from cholesterol samples adsorbed to carbon support films, spread across the holes of holey carbon films, and negatively stained with ammonium molybdate. The VCC oligomers initially attach to the edge of the stacked cholesterol bilayers and with increasing time cover the two planar surfaces. VCC oligomers are also released into solution, with some tendency to cluster, possibly via the hydrophobic membrane-spanning domain. At th…
Accurate single-shot quantitative phase imaging of biological specimens with telecentric digital holographic microscopy
2014
The advantages of using a telecentric imaging system in digital holographic microscopy (DHM) to study biological specimens are highlighted. To this end, the performances of nontelecentric DHM and telecentric DHM are evaluated from the quantitative phase imaging (QPI) point of view. The evaluated stability of the microscope allows single-shot QPI in DHM by using telecentric imaging systems. Quantitative phase maps of a section of the head of the drosophila melanogaster fly and of red blood cells are obtained via single-shot DHM with no numerical postprocessing. With these maps we show that the use of telecentric DHM provides larger field of view for a given magnification and permits more acc…
Enzymes involved in the dynamic equilibrium of core histone acetylation ofPhysarum polycephalum
1992
DEAE-Scpharose chromatography of extracts from plasmodia of the myxomyccte PI~.~suru~~t ,~/.~crpl~~ho~~ revealed the presence of multiple histone acetyltransferases and histonc deacctylascs. A cyloplasmic histonc acctyltransferase B, specific for histonc H4, and two nuclear acetyltransferases Al and A2 were identilied; Al acetylates all core hislones with a preference for l-13 and H2A. whereas A2 is specific for H3 and also slightly for H2B. Two hislone deacetylases. HDI and HD2, could be discriminated. They differ with respect to subslralc speciliciiy and pH dependence. For the first time the substrate specificity of histonc deacetylascs was determined using HPLC-purilicd individual core h…
Kernel image similarity criterion
2011
This paper presents a family of metrics for assessing image similarity. The methods use the Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion (HSIC) to estimate nonlinear statistical dependence between multidimensional images. The proposed methods have very good theoretical and practical properties. We illustrate the performance in evaluating the quality of natural photographic images, hyperspectral images under different noise levels, in synthetic multiresolution problems, and real pansharpening products.

Vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, West Nile virus, and so forth are some of the most prominent threats to human health. They are transmitted to the human population by infected insects or by direct transmission between humans. The epidemic process relies on suitable environmental and climatic conditions. Indeed, climatic factors affect the development of pathogens in vectors as well as the population dynamics of the vectors impacting significantly the incidence of disease in the human population. While the influence of the climatic conditions on Vector-borne diseases is well-documented, there is a strong need to design more realistic epidemiological models incorporating e…

ESP
A new preprocessing and control board for the phase 2 electronics of AGATA experiment
2016
The electronics of AGATA HPGe segmented gamma ray detector faces a new challenge in the search of a bigger integration and cost reduction for the phase 2 of the experiment going beyond 45 crystals. This opportunity can be used to introduce a new architecture based on commercial standards while keeping backward compatibility with current electronics. In this sense, new FPGA devices and fast Ethernet links can be used to ease the preprocessing and control task and allowing for processor farms to distribute the processing load. At the same time, modularity should be a key feature of the design in the aim to make it upgradable in time and technology. This paper presents the design of a new prep…
A study on spectral optimisation in partial response CPM signals
1995
An optimisation technique for the minimisation of the effective bandwidth in partial response CPM signals is described. The minimum Euclidean distance is used as optimisation constraint because the bit error probability is a function of this parameter for high values of signal to noise ratio. The procedure has been implemented for a correlation length corresponding to two signalling intervals. The optimisation problem leads to a system of two nonlinear differential equations for the pulse shape, together with some boundary conditions. Numerical solution of the differential equations has been performed; initial conditions have been adjusted, to satisfy the boundary conditions using an iterat…
