The pleiotropic growth factor TGFβ plays an important role in regulating responses to skin injury. TGFβ targets many different cell types and is involved in all aspects of wound healing entailing inflammation,re-epithelialization, matrix formation and remodeling. To elucidate the role of TGFβ signal transduction in keratinocytes during cutaneous wound healing, we have used transgenic mice expressing a dominant negative type II TGFβ receptor exclusively in keratinocytes. Gait Analysis Using Multiple Kinect Sensors

A gait analysis technique to model user presences in an office scenario is presented in this chapter. In contrast with other approaches, we use unobtrusive sensors, i.e., an array of Kinect devices, to detect some features of interest. In particular, the position and the spatio-temporal evolution of some skeletal joints are used to define a set of gait features, which can be either static (e.g., person height) or dynamic (e.g., gait cycle duration). Data captured by multiple Kinects is merged to detect dynamic features in a longer walk sequence. The approach proposed here was been evaluated by using three classifiers (SVM, KNN, Naive Bayes) on different feature subsets.

Genome-Wide Association Analysis in Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis

Background & Aims We aimed to characterize the genetic susceptibility to primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) by means of a genome-wide association analysis of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Methods A total of 443,816 SNPs on the Affymetrix SNP Array 5.0 (Affymetrix, Santa Clara, CA) were genotyped in 285 Norwegian PSC patients and 298 healthy controls. Associations detected in this discovery panel were re-examined in independent case-control panels from Scandinavia (137 PSC cases and 368 controls), Belgium/The Netherlands (229 PSC cases and 735 controls), and Germany (400 cases and 1832 controls). ABSTRACT Lactobacillus casei is the only lactic acid bacterium in which two pathways for l -malate degradation have been described: the malolactic enzyme (MLE) and the malic enzyme (ME) pathways. Whereas the ME pathway enables L. casei to grow on l -malate, MLE does not support growth. BACKGROUND: Although uterine leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas are considered biologically unrelated tumors, they share morphologic and histologic characteristics that complicate their differential diagnosis. Based on previous cloning and sequencing study, real-time PCR and in situ hybridization assays of the inflamed body wall of LPS-injected Ciona intestinalis showed the enhanced gene expression of a collagen with FACIT structural features (Ci-type IX-Col 1alpha-chain).
