Efficient checking of coherence and propagation of imprecise probability assessments

2000

We consider the computational difficulties in the checking of coherence and propagation of imprecise probability assessments. We examine the linear structure of the random gain in betting criterion and we propose a general methodology which exploits suitable subsets of the set of values of the random gain. In this way the checking of coherence and propagation amount to examining linear systems with a reduced number of unknowns. We also illustrate an example.

The elasticity of a random variable as a tool for measuring and assessing risks

2022

Elasticity is a very popular concept in economics and physics, recently exported and reinterpreted in the statistical field, where it has given form to the so-called elasticity function. This function has proved to be a very useful tool for quantifying and evaluating risks, with applications in disciplines as varied as public health and financial risk management. In this study, we consider the elasticity function in random terms, defining its probability distribution, which allows us to measure for each stochastic process the probability of finding elastic or inelastic situations (i.e., with elasticities greater or less than 1). This new tool, together with new results on the most notable p…

The Tax Justice Network-Africa v Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury & 2 Others: A Big Win for Tax Justice Activism?

2019

This paper develops an optimization model for selecting a large subsample that improves the representativeness of a simple random sample previously obtained from a population larger than the population of interest. The problem formulation involves convex mixed-integer nonlinear programming (convex MINLP) and is therefore NP-hard. However, the solution is found by maximizing the “constant of proportionality” – in other words, maximizing the size of the subsample taken from a stratified random sample with proportional allocation – and restricting it to a p-value high enough to achieve a good fit to the population of interest using Pearson’s chi-square goodness-of-fit test. The beauty of the m…

TESTING THE HYPOTHESIS OF AN EFFICIENT MARKET IN TERMS OF INFORMATION – THE CASE OF THE CAPITAL MARKET IN ROMANIA DURING RECESSION

2010

This paper is trying to test the hypothesis of efficient market (EMH Efficient Market Hypothesis), the case of capital market in Romania during the economic financial crisis. According to the purpose in view our research is aiming at testing the hypothesis of random walk of stock exchange indexes BET, BET-C, BET_FI of Bucharest Stock Exchange. In this respect we will enforce statistic tests to see if the capital market in Romania is efficient in a weak form during this period.

TESTING INFORMATIONAL EFFICIENCY: THE CASE OF U.E. AND BRIC EMERGENT MARKETS

2012

Empirical finance has brought together a considerable number of studies in determining the market efficiency in terms of information in the case of an emerging financial market. Conflicting results have been generated by these researches in efficient market hypothesis (EMH), so efficiency tests in the emerging financial markets are rarely definitive in reaching a conclusion about the existence of informational efficiency. This paper tests weak-form market efficiency of eight emerging markets: four U.E emerging markets: Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia and BRIC emerging markets: Brazil, Russia, India and China. The random walk hypothesis of stock exchange indices is tested…

Does better education mitigate risky health behavior? A mendelian randomization study.

2022

Education and risky health behaviors are strongly negatively correlated. Education may affect health behaviors by enabling healthier choices through higher disposable income, increasing information about the harmful effects of risky health behaviors, or altering time preferences. Alternatively, the observed negative correlation may stem from reverse causality or unobserved confounders. Based on the data from the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study linked to register-based information on educational attainment and family background, this paper identifies the causal effect of education on risky health behaviors. To examine causal effects, we used a genetic score as an instrument for year…

Analyzing online search patterns of music festival tourists

2020

Music festivals, as cultural events that induce tourism flows, intermediate both the cultural and travel experience. The present study analyzes online search behavior of potential attenders to a music festival. We hypothesize that the search process reveals latent patterns of behavior of cultural tourists planning to attend music festivals. To this end, information from Google Trends on queries related to three popular music festivals is used to build a network of search topics. Based on it, alternative exponential random graph model specifications are estimated. Findings support the general result of mediated information flows: music festivals induce planning and traveling queries. Howeve…

Biomass Assessment of Agricultural Crops Using Multi-temporal Dual-Polarimetric TerraSAR-X Data

2019

The biomass of three agricultural crops, winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), and canola (Brassica napus L.), was studied using multi-temporal dual-polarimetric TerraSAR-X data. The radar backscattering coefficient sigma nought of the two polarization channels HH and VV was extracted from the satellite images. Subsequently, combinations of HH and VV polarizations were calculated (e.g. HH/VV, HH + VV, HH × VV) to establish relationships between SAR data and the fresh and dry biomass of each crop type using multiple stepwise regression. Additionally, the semi-empirical water cloud model (WCM) was used to account for the effect of crop biomass on radar backscatter …

2021

Kelangsungan hidup ikan selamat pemeliharaan yaitu 100%. Pertumbuhan bobot mutlak individu berkisar 8.76 sampai 16.6 g…
