Smart Tools for Academic Information Seeking

2016

Systematic information seeking is an essential part of academic work. Research and information seeking go hand in hand, and both need planning. In the academic world you can hardly avoid the research plan, but you probably won’t hear that much about the information seeking plan. The information seeking plan guides you through the research process from the first sparks of an idea to the last dot in the bibliography from the point of view of the often invisible process of systematic information seeking.Systematic Information Seeking Framework designed in the Jyväskylä University Library has its roots in Carol Kuhlthau's Guided Inquiry Design Process. Our model, designed for more contextual ad…

Effects of reading proficiency and of base and whole-word frequency on reading noun- and verb-derived words: An eye-tracking study in Italian primary…

2018

The aim of this study is to assess the role of readers’ proficiency and of the base-word distributional properties on eye-movement behavior. Sixty-two typically developing children, attending 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, were asked to read derived words in a sentence context. Target words were nouns derived from noun bases (e.g., umorista, ‘humorist’), which in Italian are shared by few derived words, and nouns derived from verb bases (e.g., punizione, ‘punishment’), which are shared by about 50 different inflected forms and several derived words. Data shows that base and word frequency affected first-fixation duration for nouns derived from noun bases, but in an opposite way: base frequency ha…

O wierszu "Nie obchodzi mnie" Feliksa Netza. Lektura filologiczno-hermeneutyczna (pierwsze notatki)

2018

The article is an attempt to analyze and interpret the poem by Feliks Netz entitled Nie obchodzi mnie (I dont care), from the volume Trzy dni nieśmiertelności (Three Days of Immortality), which is an artistic reproduction of the last moments of Sándor Márai, an eminent Hungarian writer who died by suicide in San Diego in 1989. The author of this poem is one of the most prominent translators of the author of Embers into Polish, a great essayist and expert on Márai's work - hence the vision of the days and hours preceding the act of his suicide is supported by numerous autobiographical reports (derived from the Diary of the Hungarian writer from the latest period), which the author of the art…

The role of perspective on students’ use of multiple documents to solve an openended Task

2013

AbstractMcCrudden & Schraw (2007) show how students’ interaction with a text is mediated by the instructions they are presented with. Specifically, perspective instructions prompt readers to use background knowledge to evaluate text from an assigned point of view. Research on perspective in single texts has demonstrated that readers confer relevance on text segments that are consistent with the assigned perspective (Pichert & Anderson, 1977). This work has tested the effects of perspective when reading conflicting information from multiple documents to perform an open-ended task, as well as has studied if the trustworthiness of a source exerts any influence on students’ decision to use info…

Nanog Regulates Primordial Germ Cell Migration Through Cxcr4b

2010

Abstract Gonadal development in vertebrates depends on the early determination of primordial germ cells (PGCs) and their correct migration to the sites where the gonads develop. Several genes have been implicated in PGC specification and migration in vertebrates. Additionally, some of the genes associated with pluripotency, such as Oct4 and Nanog, are expressed in PGCs and gonads, suggesting a role for these genes in maintaining pluripotency of the germ lineage, which may be considered the only cell type that perpetually maintains stemness properties. Here, we report that medaka Nanog (Ol-Nanog) is expressed in the developing PGCs. Depletion of Ol-Nanog protein causes aberrant migration of …

Empowering Media Citizenship through Educommunication

2014

Hearing Voices in Dreams: Freud's Tossing and Turning with Speech and Writing

2002

In The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud repeatedly claims that there is no original speech in dreams. All dreamed speech is lifted from waking life and used as mutable raw material, whereas thought and writing can occur independently of the dream-work. This article examines Freud's insistence of the unoriginality and mutability of speech, which ostensibly reverses the supposed phonocentric tradition of Western metaphysics. Freud's interpretations, the article suggests, point to the importance of a general linguistic system in the production of meaning in dreams. This system includes non-phonetic writing and the concretization of abstract dream-thoughts into visual images. This concretization…

READING COMPETENCE AND ENGAGEMENT OF LATVIAN STUDENTS IN THE VIEW OF OECD PISA 2018 RESULTS

2020

Students' reading competence determines the achievements of learners in all areas of school education as well as in their further education, professional activity and life. The results of the OECD Program for International Student Assessment - OECD PISA 2018 confirm the need to improve reading competence in Latvia (OECD, 2019).The aim of the study is to analyze the achievement of Latvia's fifteen-year-old students in OECD PISA 2018 and the previous international program cycles in relation to students' reading engagement and its changes. Reading engagement significantly influences not only students' reading competence but are in themselves one of the goals of modern education (Guthrie & …

Neuronal-Type NO Synthase: Transcript Diversity and Expressional Regulation

1998

Of the three established isoforms of NO synthase, the gene for the neuronal-type enzyme (NOS I) is by far the largest and most complicated one. The genomic locus of the human NOS I gene is located on chromosome 12 and distributed over a region greater than 200 kb. The nucleotide sequence corresponding to the major neuronal mRNA transcript is encoded by 29 exons. The full-length open reading frame codes for a protein of 1434 amino acids with a predicted molecular weight of 160.8 kDa. However, both in rodents and in humans, multiple, tissue-specific or developmentally regulated NOS I mRNA transcripts have been reported. They arise from the initiation by different transcriptional units contain…

An altered intracellular distribution of the autoantigen La/SS-B when translated from a La mRNA isoform.

1997

Abstract Transcription of the gene encoding for the nuclear autoantigen La resulted in La mRNA isoforms. A promoter switching combined with an alternative splicing pathway replaced exon 1 with exon 1′. Similar to mRNAs encoding for ribosomal proteins, exon 1′ started with a pyrimidine-rich 5′-terminus. Moreover, exon 1′ contained 5′-GC-rich regions and an oligo(U)-tail of 23 uridine residues. Exon 1′ encoded for three open reading frames upstream of the La protein reading frame. In spite of this unusual structure, exon 1′ La mRNAs were translated not only in vitro but also in transiently transfected cells. The translational efficiency of exon 1′ La mRNA was about 14% of exon 1 La mRNA using…
