The Impact of Entrepreneur-CEOs in Microfinance Institutions: A Global Survey

2013

- Peer reviewed Microfinance is a global high-growth industry, in which entrepreneurship is prevalent and substantial. Based on the theoretical argument that microfinance entrepreneur-CEOs are “motivated agents” with a unique ability to hire and socialize mission-oriented staff, we hypothesize that these CEOs produce more sustainable microfinance institutions with better social performance and lower costs. This study utilizes data from 295 microfinance institutions in 73 developing countries, assessed between 1998 and 2010. Our empirical evidence suggests that entrepreneur-managed microfinance institutions feature higher social performance, greater financial sustainability, and lower costs.

Saving banks and society: a model of commitment to society

2012

Savings banks are increasingly interested in social issues, reflecting a corporate commitment to meet the demands of society. Our goal is to understand the importance of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) for savings banks and the actions carried out to promote it. To do this we assume that these entities are more resources devoted to society. The field work was conducted through a questionnaire answered by 57 Spanish institutions. We note that CSR is a growing movement with enormous potential, because of the role of financial intermediation and lending banks to develop. Finally, it is curious to see how social contributions materialize so correlated. Las Cajas de Ahorros tienen cada vez…

Influence of board of directors on firm performance: Analysis of family and non-family firms

2015

This article analyses how board structure can affect both financial and social performance, comparing family and non-family firms. Our theoretical framework is based on the integration of the agency theory, traditionally used in the analysis of the impact of the board on the firm's financial performance, with the stakeholder theory, which is more appropriate in the analysis of the social aspects of the firm. Three main aspects are addressed: the analysis of the firm's social performance; the integration of agency theory with stakeholder theory; and the study of the specific characteristics of family firms' boards. The research confirms that neither the agency theory nor the stakeholder theo…

Commitment of independent and institutional women directors to corporate social responsibility reporting

2018

This paper examines how independent and institutional women directors on boards affect corporate social responsibility (hereafter CSR) reporting. Most of the previous empirical evidence has shown a linear association between female directors and CSR disclosure, but to the best of our knowledge, no research has investigated the individual effect of independent and institutional female directors on CSR reporting. Therefore, the analysis of how the disclosure of CSR information is affected by independent and institutional women directors in a separate way merits our attention. Thus, we posit that there is a nonlinear association, concretely quadratic, between independent and institutional fema…

Climate Change and Global Justice: New Problem, Old Paradigm?

2014

In this paper, we focus on the conceptualization of climate change as an issue of global justice. While we do not deny that climate change raises fundamental and dramatic issues of justice among peoples as well as generations, our claim is that the language of global justice can obscure the fact that problems provoked by climate change lack some characteristic features of problems of global justice, while possessing others that are not characteristic of such problems. We begin by describing briefly how we got to where we are, climatically speaking; we go on to show why it is plausible to think of climate change as provoking problems of global justice; point out four respects in which this d…

A comparison of corporate social responsibility engagement in the OECD countries with categorical data

2015

This note presents a new method to compare the engagement level of the OECD countries with the corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities when achievements of their companies are described by CSR standards. We introduce the eigenvector procedure developed by Herrero and Villar (2013), applying the analysis of group performance with categorical data. We find that differences in CSR engagement across OECD countries are quite low in the top and the bottom of the eigenvector classification compared with those of the GRI index. However, there are important differences across countries placed in the middle rank of these two classifications.

The association between microfinance rating scores and corporate governance: A global survey

2014

Abstract The global microfinance industry has experienced high growth rates over the past decades, and the World Bank foresees a future market with billions of customers. However, the industry's continued growth is contingent on its ability to create a governance structure that supports microfinance institutions' long-term performance. Because microfinance institutions' performance is multidimensional and difficult to measure, prior research has not been successful in establishing consistent associations between governance structures and microfinance institutions' performance. We apply microfinance rating scores – a unique innovation of the microfinance industry – as a summary performance m…

Ownership, responsibility and leadership – a historical perspective

1999

The aim of this article is to present the great lines of managerial thoughts concerning ownership, business, social responsibility and leadership. The perspective of consideration is historical, and especially conceptual. We noticed that in the twentieth century a modern business ideology began to take form. Old suppositions according to the classical economic theory about the nature of economic activities started to give way when the modern professional manager type came into the management of the firm. At that time also there developed the idea of the firm as an institution with many targets. The position of the firm in society changed, people started to make demands for a wider social re…
