Solutions of elliptic equations with a level surface parallel to the boundary: stability of the radial configuration
2016
A positive solution of a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary value problem or initial-value problems for certain elliptic or parabolic equations must be radially symmetric and monotone in the radial direction if just one of its level surfaces is parallel to the boundary of the domain. Here, for the elliptic case, we prove the stability counterpart of that result. We show that if the solution is almost constant on a surface at a fixed distance from the boundary, then the domain is almost radially symmetric, in the sense that is contained in and contains two concentric balls $${B_{{r_e}}}$$ and $${B_{{r_i}}}$$ , with the difference r e -r i (linearly) controlled by a suitable norm of the deviation…
Expression von Tenascin, Laminin und Fibronectin nach traumatischer vorderer Kreuzbandruptur
2008
In the present study, the pattern of some extracellular matrix glycoproteins was determined in traumatic anterior cruciate ligament ruptures (n = 17) and in normal ligaments (n = 11). 6 microns cryo-sections were incubated with monoclonal antibodies recognizing tenascin, laminin, and fibronectin, and FITC-labeled secondary antibodies. Immunohistochemistry revealed that tenascin, fibronectin and laminin are sparsely distributed in normal anterior cruciate ligaments, but strongly expressed in ruptured ligaments with a time-restricted pattern. The de novo-expression of tenascin appeared before laminin but later than fibronectin. The data suggest that fibronectin and tenascin are important, par…
The forgotten mathematical legacy of Peano
2019
International audience; The formulations that Peano gave to many mathematical notions at the end of the 19th century were so perfect and modern that they have become standard today. A formal language of logic that he created, enabled him to perceive mathematics with great precision and depth. He described mathematics axiomatically basing the reasoning exclusively on logical and set-theoretical primitive terms and properties, which was revolutionary at that time. Yet, numerous Peano’s contributions remain either unremembered or underestimated.
Skolēnu rakstīti dzejoļi angļu valodas darbības vārdu gramatisko laiku apguves veicināšanai 7. klasē
2016
Characterization of antigenic epitopes of potato virus Y.
1993
Immunochemical analysis of overlapping synthetic hexapeptides covering the entire length of the coat protein of potato virus Y (PVY) revealed immunodominant regions both at the N-terminal and at the C-terminal end of the coat protein. Immunization of rabbits with synthetic peptides representing N- and C-terminal regions of the coat protein resulted in production of antibodies that reacted with PVY. Antigenicity of PVY peptides was found to correlate with predicted beta turns, with hydrophilicity and with predicted chain flexibility. Characterization of the immunochemical properties of PVY will facilitate the development of detection methods for potyviruses.
Statins and new-onset diabetes
2013
Statins are highly efficacious lipid modifying agents that reduce the risk for cardiovascular (CV) events in both primary and secondary prevention settings. However, statins affect molecular mechanisms which adversely impact on insulin sensitivity and β-cell function, thereby increasing risk for new onset diabetes mellitus (NOD). Defining the mechanisms involved is the focus of considerable current investigation. The statins reduce the risk for CV events in normoglycemic patients as well as in those with diabetes mellitus (DM) and their benefits outweigh the risk of inducing NOD. We review the clinical evidence for NOD with statin treatment, as well as the potential mechanisms involved. Our…
Atomic physics studies at the gamma factory at CERN
2020
The Gamma Factory initiative proposes to develop novel research tools at CERN by producing, accelerating and storing highly relativistic, partially stripped ion beams in the SPS and LHC storage rings. By exciting the electronic degrees of freedom of the stored ions with lasers, high-energy narrow-band photon beams will be produced by properly collimating the secondary radiation that is peaked in the direction of ions' propagation. Their intensities, up to $10^{17}$ photons per second, will be several orders of magnitude higher than those of the presently operating light sources in the particularly interesting $\gamma$--ray energy domain reaching up to 400 MeV. This article reviews opportuni…
Single amino acids in the lumenal loop domain influence the stability of the major light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b complex.
2004
The major light-harvesting complex of photosystem II (LHCIIb) is one of the most abundant integral membrane proteins. It greatly enhances the efficiency of photosynthesis in green plants by binding a large number of accessory pigments that absorb light energy and conduct it toward the photosynthetic reaction centers. Most of these pigments are associated with the three transmembrane and one amphiphilic alpha helices of the protein. Less is known about the significance of the loop domains connecting the alpha helices for pigment binding. Therefore, we randomly exchanged single amino acids in the lumenal loop domain of the bacterially expressed apoprotein Lhcb1 and then reconstituted the muta…
Search for Lorentz and CPT violation using sidereal time dependence of neutrino flavor transitions over a short baseline
2017
A class of extensions of the Standard Model allows Lorentz and CPT violations, which can be identified by the observation of sidereal modulations in the neutrino interaction rate. A search for such modulations was performed using the T2K on-axis near detector. Two complementary methods were used in this study, both of which resulted in no evidence of a signal. Limits on associated Lorentz and CPT-violating terms from the Standard Model extension have been derived by taking into account their correlations in this model for the first time. These results imply such symmetry violations are suppressed by a factor of more than 1020 at the GeV scale.
Local conical dimensions for measures
2012
AbstractWe study the decay of μ(B(x,r)∩C)/μ(B(x,r)) asr↓ 0 for different kinds of measures μ on ℝnand various conesCaroundx. As an application, we provide sufficient conditions that imply that the local dimensions can be calculated via cones almost everywhere.
