The archaeological investigations (1998-1999) conducted in the area in front of the medieval castle of Butera (CL) have returned part of the internal courtyard of the building, equipped with a system of wells and siloi for water supply and granary. The stratigraphic relationships between the structures and the analysis of the material found inside the cisterns, as well as highlighting the different building phases during which the extensive collection system for water and grain was built (12th/13th-15th century ), allow us to have interesting indicators relating to the duration of circulation of the various pottery classes identified

The Byzantine chant is a fundamental element of the cultural identity of the Albanians of Sicily (the Arbëresh). The origin of this musical tradition dates back to the period after the fall of Constantinople (1453), when many exodus of Albanian and Greek populations occurred from Albania and Morea towards Sicily and other southern Italian regions. Since that time the Arbëresh Byzantine chant has been handed down only orally. In the Eparchy of the Arbëresh of Sicily this ancient and traditional musical repertoire is well preserved and accompanies the Liturgies and the Offices (Matins, Vespers, Hours) of the whole liturgical year. Prospero hierae (Hyacinthaceae), a New Species from Marettimo Island (Sicily)

A new species, Prospero hierae C. Brullo, S. Brullo, Giusso, Pavone & Salmeri (Hyacinthaceae), from Island of Marettimo (Egadi Archipelago, Sicily) is described and illustrated. Its chromosome number (2n = 14), leaf anatomy and ecology are examined. This small species with glaucous, adaxially flat leaves is closely related with the taxa belonging to the Prospero autumnale group and, in particular, it shows more affinities with P. corsicum, P. pulchellum and P. minimum.

AbstractFabric and stable isotopic composition of a Holocene stalagmite (CR1) from a cave in northern Sicily record changes in paleorainfall in the early Holocene. High δ13C stable isotope values in the calcite deposited from ca. 8500 to ca. 7500 yr ago are interpreted as reflecting periods of high rainfall. The wet phase was interrupted by two periods of multi-century duration characterized by relatively cool and dry winters centered at ca. 8200 and ca. 7500 yr ago, highlighted by low δ13C and δ18O values.
