The metalloproteinase-disintegrin ADAM10 is exclusively expressed by type I muscle fibers.

2008

ADAM10 (Kuzbanian) is a member of a recently discovered family of membrane-anchored metalloproteinases with a complex and conserved domain structure. In part, these metalloproteinases have been implicated in muscle formation. Herein the expression pattern of ADAM10 in human skeletal muscle was studied. ADAM10 was found to be present in human myoblasts and to be exclusively expressed in type I fibers, suggesting that it may be critical in muscle fiber differentiation.

The positioning system of the ANTARES Neutrino Telescope

2012

The ANTARES neutrino telescope, located 40km off the coast of Toulon in the Mediterranean Sea at a mooring depth of about 2475m, consists of twelve detection lines equipped typically with 25 storeys. Every storey carries three optical modules that detect Cherenkov light induced by charged secondary particles (typically muons) coming from neutrino interactions. As these lines are flexible structures fixed to the sea bed and held taut by a buoy, sea currents cause the lines to move and the storeys to rotate. The knowledge of the position of the optical modules with a precision better than 10cm is essential for a good reconstruction of particle tracks. In this paper the ANTARES positioning sys…

A methodology for the sustainability assessment of agri-food systems: an application to the Slow Food Presidia project

2014

New and alternative models for agri-food production and consumption have brought up questions regarding the effects they have on local development processes in terms of the economic exploitation of rural areas as well as environmental, cultural, and social factors. The agri-food system proposed by the Slow Food (SF) Presidia Project, which focuses on farm-to-market systems for local, high-quality, sustainable products, can respond to the new and emerging needs of both rural and urban populaces via several approaches in addition to food production itself. However, evaluating these parameters is challenging. The aim of this study was to develop an indicator-based tool to monitor the sustainab…

Rules and norms: two kinds of normative behaviour:

2016

Celano’s notion of a “pre-convention” is grounded in the opposition between two allegedly different kinds of normative behaviour: observing a “rule” and conforming to a “norm”. This opposition plays a central role in Celano’s paper, and marks a crucial point in his intellectual trajectory. Nevertheless, it remains largely implicit. In this paper, I try to make it fully explicit, giving a more precise characterisation of both kinds of normative behaviour. I also focus on the importance of distinguishing between them, express some conjectures (or wishes) regarding Celano’s future research, and propose a (marginal) criticism.

Ecopedagogia e nonviolenza nell’era planetaria. La scelta vegetariana

2016

Vegetarianism is not a forced choice nor an ideology, but it can be interpreted as a possible way of life and as an educational option. It is closely connected with a nonviolent modus vivendi which implies the choice not to kill humans and animals. It is a choice that, along the history, has been associated with a path of spiritual education. Vegetarianism can be seen, following the lesson of the Masters of nonviolence, as an important step for an integral education that promotes better human relationships and interconnections among all creatures that inhabit the planet.

'A Shared Reality between a Journalist and the Audience': How Live Journalism Reimagines News Stories

2021

Live journalism is a new journalistic genre in which journalists present news stories to a live audience. This article investigates the journalistic manuscripts of live journalism performances. With the focus on texts, the article reaches beyond the live performance to explore the wider implications and potentials pioneered by live journalists. The data were gathered from Musta laatikko (‘Black Box’) manuscripts, a live journalism production by the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. The manuscripts were analysed as eudaimonic journalism through four conceptual dimensions: self-transcendence, autonomy, competence, and relatedne…

Slow Pyrolysis as a Method for Biochar Production from Carob Waste: Process Investigation and Products’ Characterization

2021

The zero-waste city challenge of the modern society is inevitably addressed to the development of model’s waste-to-energy. In this work, carob waste, largely used in the agro-industrial sector for sugar extraction or locust beangum (LBG) production, is considered as feedstock for the slow pyrolysis process. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in 2012, the world production of carobs was ca. 160,000 tons, mainly concentrated in the Mediterranean area (Spain, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, and Greece). To evaluate the biomass composition, at first, the carob waste was subjected to thermo-gravimetric analysis. The high content of fixed carbon suggest…

EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT FERTILIZATION LEVELS ON IBERIS SEMPERFLORENS POT CULTURE

2013

The genus Iberis (family Brassicaceae) includes 30 species of annual and perennial herbs and subshrubs that grow in a wide area from western and central Europe to the Mediterranean Basin. IberissemperflorensL. is a perennial evergreen subshrub (30-60 cm high) endemic to southern Italy and Sicily. Due to its abundance of white flowers and extensive flowering period occurring during the winter months, the species has good potential for pot cultivation and outdoor ornamental use in Mediterranean-type climates. Reliable and efficient propagation methods for I. semperflorens nursery production have been determined. However, there are limited information on cultural techniques of this winter flow…

Emancipazione pubblica e oppressione privata. Tratteggi di una gender violence tardo moderna nell'incrociarsi di paradigmi atlantici e mediterranei

2016

The paper intends to focus on the unfinished character of a slow-modernity where women are still in the balance between legitimacy frame concerning their emancipation in the public sphere, and representation frame of traditional roles of spouse and mother in private life; between postmodern values, accepted rationally, and premodern values, internalized emotionally. It often happens so that even the most educated women of the middle and upper class accept and legitimize in the private sphere the symbolic and indirect violence, and sometimes the physical violence by their partners in an effort to reconcile public post-modern expectations and private pre-modern expectations. As the «Acrobat o…
