The cloud-point temperatures (T-cl's) of trans-decahydronaphthalene(TD)/polystyrene (PS, (M) over bar (w) = 270 000) solutions were determined by light scattering measurements over a range of temperatures (1-16degreesC), pressures (100-900 bar), and compositions (4.2-21.6 vol.-% polymer). The system phase separates upon cooling and T-cl was found to increase with rising pressure for constant composition. In the absence of special effects, this finding indicates positive excess volume for the mixing. Surfactant Association: Recent Theoretical and Experimental Developments

A theoretical model describing the association of ionic surfactants into rod-shaped micelles is combined with an approximate formula for the viscosity increase induced by rod-shaped aggregates. It is shown that most of the thermodynamic parameters of the association model can be obtained from viscosity measurements. The approach is applied to micellar solutions of hexadecylpyridinium salts. The pronounced effect of counter-ion concentration on the growth of rod-shaped micelles can be attributed to a slightly higher degree of counter-ion association in the cylindrical part than in the end portions. Preparation, characterization and hydrolytic degradation of PLA/PCL co-mingled nanofibrous mats prepared via dual-jet electrospinning

Abstract PLA/PCL co-mingled nanofibrous mats were prepared via multi-jet electrospinning. The concentration of PLA and PCL in the co-mingled mats were controlled by changing the flow rate of the two polymer solutions. The amount of PLA and PCL in the co-mingled nanofibrous mats was monitored by UV–Vis measurements through a colored dye added to PLA and by FTIR-ATR analysis. Morphology and mechanical properties of the nanofibrous mats were respectively examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and tensile tests. Collocation Method for Linear BVPs via B-spline Based Fuzzy Transform

The paper is devoted to an application of a modified F-transform technique based on B-splines in solving linear boundary value problems via the collocation method. An approximate solution is sought as a composite F-transform of a discrete function (which allows the solution to be compactly stored as the values of this discrete function). We demonstrate the effectiveness of the described technique with numerical examples, compare it with other methods and propose theoretical results on the order of approximation when the fuzzy partition is based on cubic B-splines.

Abstract In this article, we present a thorough numerical comparison between unsymmetric and symmetric radial basis function collocation methods for the numerical solution of boundary value problems for partial differential equations. A series of test examples was solved with these two schemes, different problems with different type of governing equations, and boundary conditions. Particular emphasis was paid to the ability of these schemes to solve the steady-state convection-diffusion equation at high values of the Peclet number. The tropical stingless bees have evolved intricate communication systems to recruit nestmates to food locations. Some species are able to accurately communicate the location of food, whereas others simply announce the presence of food in the environment. Plebeia droryana is a tiny Neotropical stingless bee that, until recently, was thought to use a solitary foraging strategy, that is without the use of a recruitment communication system. A formulation for layered beams undergoing end loads, namely axial, shear and bending actions, is developed and presented in this paper. A layer-wise kinematical model is first derived so that the point-wise balance relationships are fulfilled at the layer level. A theory of laminated beams subjected to axial, bending and shear loads is presented in this paper. The kinematical model employed to describe the laminated beam displacement field is layer-wise in nature. Moreover it is such that the equilibrium equations and the continuity of the stress components at plies interfaces are satisfied.
