Localized molecular orbitals for excited states of polyenals, polyendials, and polyenones
2003
The work is focused on the generation of localized molecular orbitals for excited states. A recently developed a priori method based in a CAS-SCF–type algorithm is applied. The method generates directly localized orbitals and can be applied to multireference wavefunctions. A detailed description of the performance of the method as well as the locality of the MOs for the example of the singlet nπ* (CO) excited state is given. It is in general possible to obtain local orbitals for the doubly occupied and virtual valence orbitals. The partial delocalization of the π* (CO) orbital is discussed, as is the effect of the use of different CAS spaces. The systems under study are polyenals, polyendia…
Donor-acceptor substituted polyenes : orientation in mono- and multilayers
1992
Large molecules containing different chemical units whose interactions within the molecule result in new macroscopically observable effects, have become increasingly important. The organization of molecules of this type in ordered structures leads to functional molecular materials.Their use in molecular electronics requires that the units exhibit specific electronic properties. Recently, we reported on the intramolecular energy transfer through terminally substituted conjugated polyenes. An intramolecular electron transfer within donor-acceptor substituted polyenes can be achieved by introducing suitable terminal groups.
The e-ASTROGAM gamma-ray space observatory for the multimessenger astronomy of the 2030s
2018
e-ASTROGAM is a concept for a breakthrough observatory space mission carrying a gamma-ray telescope dedicated to the study of the non-thermal Universe in the photon energy range from 0.15 MeV to 3 GeV. The lower energy limit can be pushed down to energies as low as 30 keV for gamma-ray burst detection with the calorimeter. The mission is based on an advanced space-proven detector technology, with unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, combined with remarkable polarimetric capability. Thanks to its performance in the MeV-GeV domain, substantially improving its predecessors, e-ASTROGAM will open a new window on the non-thermal Universe, making pioneering observations of the…
Gaming as a Key Approach for the Recovery Process of a Public Space: The Case Study of the Old Chemical Plant ‘Chimica Arenella’ in Palermo
2021
This poster describes the FORGE (FactOry of uRban GamEs) project, a proposal that our research group launched in partnership with the Municipality of Palermo (Italy) and other local stakeholders in 2019. FORGE will be hosted in what was previously a chemical plant (the former 'Chimica Arenella') and is an open factory designed to collect needs and to generate interventions for urban innovation. The four key terms we have used for the project are urban, game, factory and participation. In fact, FORGE employs a participatory methodological model based on the concept of game, aimed at supporting social and economic development through a platform for participatory co-design. FORGE plays also a …
Nonlinear chiral transport in Dirac semimetals
2018
We study the current of chiral charge density in a Dirac semimetal with two Dirac points in momentum space, subjected to an externally applied time dependent electric field and in the presence of a magnetic field. Based on the kinetic equation approach, we find contributions to the chiral charge current, that are proportional to the second power of the electric field and to the first and second powers of the magnetic field, describing the interplay of the chiral anomaly and the drift motion of electrons moving under the action of electric and magnetic fields.
Chiral expansion of the nucleon mass to order q^6
2006
We present the results of a complete two-loop calculation at order q^6 of the nucleon mass in manifestly Lorentz-invariant chiral perturbation theory. The renormalization is performed using the reformulated infrared renormalization, which allows for the treatment of two-loop integrals while preserving all relevant symmetries, in particular chiral symmetry.
Modelo empírico para la determinación de clorofila-a en aguas continentales a partir de los futuros Sentinel-2 y 3. Validación con imágenes HICO
2014
[EN] Chlorophyll-a concentration is one of the main indicators of inland waters quality. Using CHRIS/PROBA images and in situ data obtained in four lakes in Colombia and Spain, we obtained empirical models for the estimation of chlorophyll-a concentration, which can be directly applied to future images of MSI Sentinel-2 and OLCI Sentinel-3 sensors. The models, based on spectral band indices, were validated with data from the hyperspectral sensor HICO, onboard of the International Space Station.
Phylogenetic relationship of the green alga Nanochlorum eukaryotum deduced from its chloroplast rRNA sequences.
1995
The marine green coccoidal alga Nanochlorum eukaryotum (N.e.) is of small size with an average diameter of 1.5 microns. It is characterized by primitive-appearing biochemical and morphological properties, which are considerably different from those of other green algae. Thus, it has been proposed that N.e. may be an early developed algal form. To prove this hypothesis, DNA of N.e. was isolated by a phenol extraction procedure, and the chloroplast DNA separated by preparative CsCl density-gradient centrifugation. The kinetic complexity of the nuclear and of the chloroplast DNA was evaluated by reassociation kinetics to 3 x 10(7) bp and 9 x 10(4) bp, respectively. Several chloroplast genes, i…
Program for the interpretive optimization of two-dimensional resolution.
2016
The challenge of fully optimizing LC × LC separations is horrendous. Yet, it is essential to address this challenge if sophisticated LC × LC instruments are to be utilized to their full potential in an efficient manner. Currently, lengthy method development is a major obstacle to the proliferation of the technique, especially in industry. A program was developed for the rigorous optimization of LC × LC separations, using gradient-elution in both dimensions. The program establishes two linear retention models (one for each dimension) based on just two LC × LC experiments. It predicts LC × LC chromatograms using a simple van-Deemter model to generalize band-broadening. Various objectives (ana…
Detailed study of SNR G306.3–0.9 using XMM-Newton and Chandra observations
2016
Aims. We aim to study the spatial distribution of the physical and chemical properties of the X-ray emitting plasma of the supernova remnant (SNR) G306.3-0.9 in detail to obtain constraints on its ionization stage, the progenitor supernova explosion, and the age of the remnant. Methods. We used combined data from XMM-Newton and Chandra observatories to study the X-ray morphology of G306.3-0.9 in detail. A spatially resolved spectral analysis was used to obtain physical and geometrical parameters of different regions of the remnant. Spitzer infrared observations, available in the archive, were also used to constrain the progenitor supernova and study the environment in which the remnant evol…
