In the FE analysis of quasi-brittle materials, one of the main issues is how to correctly capture cracks propagation. In particular, under specific load intensity, strains progressively localize in narrow bands, leading to a global nonlinear softening response until collapse. A variety of FE models have been proposed, which may be separated in two main groups: discrete crack models and continuous models. Discrete crack models introduce a discontinuity along the inter-element boundaries or inside elements (intra-element discontinuity). Noradrenaline (NA) 1 microM and caffeine (CAF) 10 mM induce a contractile response in isolated rat aorta maintained at 37 degrees C either in the presence or absence of extracellular calcium. In Ca-free media the contractile response was reduced and contractile activity of CAF only occurred at 25 degrees C. NA induced a biphasic response in Ca-free medium, with a fast phasic contraction followed by a smaller more sustained contraction. The response induced by CAF consisted of a fast transient contraction which returned to a level below the resting tone. Cytotoxic T lymphocytes specific for immune alloantigens controlled by alleles of the Ly system have been induced in vivo. These results were obtained either in a secondary type of response or by treating mice before immunization with a single dose of cyclophosphamide (80 mg/kg).

Multipotent adult germline stem cells and embryonic stem cells have similar microRNA profiles.

Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) isolated from the adult mouse testis and cultured have been shown to respond to culture conditions and become pluripotent, so called multipotent adult germline stem cells (maGSCs). microRNAs (miRNAs) belonging to the 290 and 302 miRNA clusters have been previously classified as embryonic stem cell (ESC) specific. Here, we show that these miRNAs generally characterize pluripotent cells. They are expressed not only in ESCs but also in maGSCs as well as in the F9 embryonic carcinoma cell (ECC) line. Use of a collagen/elastin-membrane for the tissue engineering of dermis.

In an experimental model in rats, xenogeneic membranes consisting of processed native collagen and elastin were grafted to serve as a template for the formation of a neo-dermis, while in vitro-cultured autogeneic keratinocytes were applied on top of this to restore an epidermis. The process of tissue reconstruction and the digestion of the grafted membrane components were analysed by histological and immunohistochemical methods as well as electron microscopy. Approximately 3 weeks post grafting the membranes were completely vascularised and colonized by different types of cells. Larval competition in Drosophila melanogaster: frequency-dependence of viability

Strain induced renormalization of transport properties in UPt3 thin films

The growth of sputter deposited UPt3 thin films on Al2O3 (1012), LaAlO3 (111) and SrTiO3 (111) was investigated. We found strongly 0001-textured growth of UPt3 in a small compositional range of 23–25% uranium content. For Al2O3-and LaAlO3-substrates no in-plane order could be observed whereas epitaxial growth was initiated on SrTiO3 (111): The growth can be identified as Vollmer-Weber like resulting in the formation of large lateral strain as a consequence of the growth mode and a lattice misfit of −4.3% between UPt3 (0001) and SrTiO3 (111).
