Exploring grade 9 students' assumption making when mathematizing
2015
International audience; Making assumptions is a key activity in modelling. The present study aims to explore the variety of assumptions that lower secondary students make in this process. As theoretical basis for the data analysis, we used the modelling cycle by Blum and Leiss (2007) and framed a definition of assumptions. The study was carried out with grade 9 students. The results show three categories of assumptions: (1) parameter assumptions, (2) assumptions for the choice of the mathematical model, and (3) assumptions about task expectations. Assumptions from the first two categories assist students to use extra-mathematical knowledge to construct a mathematical model, while the third …
The role and presence of conflicts in romantic Erasmus relationships
2017
The present study assesses the presence and importance of conflicts in intercultural relationships that were created during an Erasmus exchange period abroad. The theoretical background is based upon the concepts of third culture building (TCB) and conflict management styles, both of which were used to explain the various stages of the relationship development. So far the scholarly literature on the subject of Erasmus students is rather scarce and only a few studies focus on intercultural couples’ lived experiences concerning conflicts. This study is driven by the need for more developed and valid information of Erasmus couples that in fact form a rather large number of the Erasmus students…
"In short: all people are different" : teachers' and teacher students' views and conceptions of cultural diversity
2016
Tutkimus on lähestymistavaltaan fenomenografinen.

Finnish and German student teachers’ motivations for choosing teaching as a career : The first application of the FIT-Choice scale in Finland
2019
This study introduces and validates the Finnish version of the FIT-Choice scale and uses the scale to explore Finnish undergraduate students' motivations for choosing teaching as a career as well as their perceptions of teaching as a profession in comparison to German student teachers. The results replicated the FIT-Choice structure both in Finland and Germany. Sample comparisons revealed that motivations for teaching and perceptions of the teaching profession reflected both differences and similarities between Finland and Germany. The study offers novel information on student teachers’ motivational structure. peerReviewed

Predicting Change in Middle School Students’ Leisure-Time Physical Activity Participation: A Prospective Test of the Trans-Contextual Model
2020
We applied the trans-contextual model (TCM) to examine the effects of middle school students’ perceived autonomy support from their physical education (PE) teachers on autonomous motivation toward PE in school and, critically, autonomous motivation toward, and actual participation in, leisure-time physical activity (PA). The research adopted a three-wave prospective design enabling the modeling of change in the TCM constructs over time. Middle school students (N = 248) aged from 12 to 16 years reported their perceived autonomy support, autonomous motivation in PE, autonomous motivation toward leisure-time PA, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control (PBC), intentions for PA…
Effect of self-determined motivation in physical education on objectively measured habit physical activity : a trans-contextual model
2019
Grounded in the trans-contextual model, the purpose of the present study was to examine the role of self-determined motivation in Physical Education (PE) on self-determined motivation in Physical Activity (PA), PA intention, and accelerometer-measured habitual PA behavior among high-school aged adolescents. A sample of 394 Spanish high-school students (211 males and 183 females; aged 12-16 years) participated in the present study. The outcome measure of PA was established using accelerometry, whereas motiva- tion toward PA and PE as well as PA intention were measured using validated questionnaires. Path analyses supported in part the central propositions of the trans-contextual model. Self-…
Motivation to Study for PhD Degree: Case of Latvia
2014
AbstractThis paper studies what goals individuals pursue when enrolling in doctoral studies and how it affects the characteristics of the university they find important for choosing it and information sources on doctoral programme they find useful. It uses data collected in 2014 from PhD students and PhD candidates in 14 universities in Latvia and from students born in Latvia but studying abroad. The main result is substantial heterogeneity of goals by field of study, allowing to divide the latter into three groups. Group 1 contains arts & humanities, economics, and education & psychology. Compared to it, students from Group 2 (biology, agriculture, environment & geoscience; physics, mathem…
