Advanced fragmentation stage of oxide coating on polymer substrate under biaxial tension

Crack patterns of 100-nm-thick silicon oxide coating on polypropylene film subjected to equibiaxial stress loading are studied experimentally. The loading is achieved by means of a bulging cell mounted under an optical microscope with stepwise pressurization of film specimens. The evolution of the coating fragment area distribution at relatively high strains is modeled using Weibull statistics to describe the coating strength. The fragment area distribution at an advanced fragmentation stage is shown to scale with the average fragment area, the latter being a power function of the applied biaxial strain.
Layout influence on microwave performance of graphene field effect transistors

The authors report on an in-depth statistical and parametrical investigation on the microwave performance of graphene FETs on sapphire substrate. The devices differ for the gate-drain/source distance and for the gate length, having kept instead the gate width constant. Microwave S -parameters have been measured for the different devices. Their results demonstrate that the cut-off frequency does not monotonically increase with the scaling of the device geometry and that it exists an optimal region in the gate-drain/source and gate-length space which maximises the microwave performance.

This thesis focuses on the coupling of High–Speed Atomic Force Microscopy (HS-AFM) and Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) for biomolecule analysis. We have designed a fabrication protocol to manufacture “SERS-active” substrates. The efficacy of gold, silver and gold-silver bimetallic crystalline nanoparticle substrates were evaluated. We have investigated the impact of optical and morphological features of the substrates on Raman signal intensity by analyzing well-known samples such as bipyridine ethylene and methylene blue molecules. The aim of the study was to examine the performance of turfgrass warm season species, including 6 varieties of Cynodon dactylon in comparison with Zoysia japonica and Paspalum vaginatum in three substrates with different soil textures (sandy loam, sandy clay loam, clay), to find the one or the ones that adapt best in the Mediterranean environment. The results showed the best perfomances in sandy loam substrate and for C.dactylon cv. Transcontinental, Capriola and La Paloma. Z. japonica, Zenith, had lower values.

The expression of the major protein kinase C substrate MARCKS (myristoylated alanine-rich C kinase substrate) is controlled by the stability of its mRNA. While the MARCKS mRNA is long living in quiescent fibroblasts (t1/2 = 14 h), its half-life time is drastically reduced (t1/2 = 2 h) in cells treated with phorbol esters to activate protein kinase C (PKC) or treated with growth factors.
