Decoherence in circuits of small Josephson junctions

2001

We discuss dephasing by the dissipative electromagnetic environment and by measurement in circuits consisting of small Josephson junctions. We present quantitative estimates and determine in which case the circuit might qualify as a quantum bit. Specifically, we analyse a three junction Cooper pair pump and propose a measurement to determine the decoherence time $\tau_\phi$.

Effects of Lévy noise on the dynamics of sine-Gordon solitons in long Josephson junctions

2015

We numerically investigate the generation of solitons in current-biased long Josephson junctions in relation to the superconducting lifetime and the voltage drop across the device. The dynamics of the junction is modelled with a sine-Gordon equation driven by an oscillating field and subject to an external non-Gaussian noise. A wide range of $\alpha$-stable L\'evy distributions is considered as noise source, with varying stability index $\alpha$ and asymmetry parameter $\beta$. In junctions longer than a critical length, the mean switching time (MST) from superconductive to the resistive state assumes a values independent of the device length. Here, we demonstrate that such a value is direc…

Suppression of timing errors in short overdamped Josephson junctions

2004

The influence of fluctuations and periodical driving on temporal characteristics of short overdamped Josephson junction is analyzed. We obtain the standard deviation of the switching time in the presence of a dichotomous driving force for arbitrary noise intensity and in the frequency range of practical interest. For sinusoidal driving the resonant activation effect has been observed. The mean switching time and its standard deviation have a minimum as a function of driving frequency. As a consequence the optimization of the system for fast operation will simultaneously lead to minimization of timing errors.

Dynamic spin-triplet order induced by alternating electric fields in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junctions

2021

Dynamic states offer extended possibilities to control the properties of quantum matter. Recent efforts are focused on studying the ordered states which appear exclusively under the time-dependent drives. Here we demonstrate a class of systems which feature dynamic spin-triplet superconducting order stimulated by the alternating electric field. The effect is based on the interplay of ferromagnetism, interfacial spin-orbital coupling (SOC) and the condensate motion driven by the field, which converts hidden static p-wave order, produced by the joint action of the ferromagnetism and the SOC, into dynamical s-wave equal-spin triplet correlations. We demonstrate that the critical current of Jos…

Quantum transport of non-interacting Fermi gas in an optical lattice combined with harmonic trapping

2004

We consider a non-interacting Fermi gas in a combined harmonic and periodic potential. We calculate the energy spectrum and simulate the motion of the gas after sudden replacement of the trap center. For different parameter regimes, the system presents dipole oscillations, damped oscillations around the replaced center, and localization. The behaviour is explained by the change of the energy spectrum from linear to quadratic.

Entanglement of superconducting qubits via microwave fields: Classical and quantum regimes

2008

We study analytically and numerically the problem of two qubits with fixed coupling irradiated with quantum or classical fields. In the classical case, we derive an effective Hamiltonian, and construct composite pulse sequences leading to a CNOT gate. In the quantum case, we show that qubit-qubit-photon multiparticle entanglement and maximally entangled two-qubit state can be obtained by driving the system at very low powers (one quanta of excitation). Our results can be applied to a variety of systems of two superconducting qubits coupled to resonators.

Resonant effects in a SQUID qubit subjected to nonadiabatic changes

2013

By quickly modifying the shape of the effective potential of a double SQUID flux qubit from a single-well to a double-well condition, we experimentally observe an anomalous behavior, namely an alternance of resonance peaks, in the probability to find the qubit in a given flux state. The occurrence of Landau-Zener transitions as well as resonant tunneling between degenerate levels in the two wells may be invoked to partially justify the experimental results. A quantum simulation of the time evolution of the system indeed suggests that the observed anomalous behavior can be imputable to quantum coherence effects. The interplay among all these mechanisms has a practical implication for quantum…

Emulating the one-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model by a double chain of qubits

2016

The Jordan-Wigner transformation maps a one-dimensional spin-1/2 system onto a fermionic model without spin degree of freedom. A double chain of quantum bits with XX and ZZ couplings of neighboring qubits along and between the chains, respectively, can be mapped on a spin-full 1D Fermi-Hubbard model. The qubit system can thus be used to emulate the quantum properties of this model. We analyze physical implementations of such analog quantum simulators, including one based on transmon qubits, where the ZZ interaction arises due to an inductive coupling and the XX interaction due to a capacitive interaction. We propose protocols to gain confidence in the results of the simulation through measu…

Local Sensing with the Multi-Level AC Stark Effect

2018

Analyzing weak microwave signals in the GHz regime is a challenging task if the signal level is very low and the photon energy widely undefined. A superconducting qubit can detect signals in the low photon regime, but due to its discrete level structure, it is only sensitive to photons of certain energies. With a multi-level quantum system (qudit) in contrast, the unknown signal frequency and amplitude can be deduced from the higher level AC Stark shift. The measurement accuracy is given by the signal amplitude, its detuning from the discrete qudit energy level structure and the anharmonicity. We demonstrate an energy sensitivity in the order of $10^{-3}$ with a measurement range of more th…

Microwave-induced coupling of superconducting qubits

2008

We investigate the quantum dynamics of a system of two coupled superconducting qubits under microwave irradiation. We find that, with the qubits operated at the charge co-degeneracy point, the quantum evolution of the system can be described by a new effective Hamiltonian which has the form of two coupled qubits with tunable coupling between them. This Hamiltonian can be used for experimental tests on macroscopic entanglement and for implementing quantum gates.
