Darstellung einiger oligomerer Cyclo{oligo[(2-hydroxy-1,3-phenylen)methylen]}e. Spektroskopische Untersuchung ihrer Pseudorotation
1978
Correction for aerosol effects on satellite sea surface temperature measurements
1998
Estimation of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) from split- window algorithms for NOAA-AVHRR data can be determined with rms values of 0.7 K on a global basis. However, this figure is not compatible with the stringent accuracy of 0.3 K required by climate studies. Among the different sources of errors, the presence of tropospheric aerosols in the satellite field of view prevents the retrieval of accurate satellite SSTs. Still, the effect of aerosols on temperature measurements derived from remote sensing techniques has been traditionally overlooked. Very few studies have addressed the problem of giving split-window algorithms which incorporate aerosol correction, although retrieving algorithms …
African trypanosomes expressing multiple VSGs are rapidly eliminated by the host immune system
2019
Significance Many parasites escape the host immune system by undergoing antigenic variation, a process in which surface antigens are regularly shed and replaced by new ones. Trypanosoma brucei employs multiple sophisticated molecular mechanisms to ensure the expression of a homogeneous VSG coat. We generated a mutant parasite that expresses multiple distinct VSGs and studied the consequences of having a multi-VSG coat during an infection. We showed that expression of multiple VSGs makes the parasites more vulnerable to the immune response, which can now control the trypanosomes from the onset of the infection, allowing most mice to survive. In the future, trypanosome infections may be treat…

Supramolecular self-assembly on the B-Si(111)-(√3x√3) R30° surface: From single molecules to multicomponent networks
2017
Abstract Understanding the physical and chemical processes in which local interactions lead to ordered structures is of particular relevance to the realization of supramolecular architectures on surfaces. While spectacular patterns have been demonstrated on metal surfaces, there have been fewer studies of the spontaneous organization of supramolecular networks on semiconductor surfaces, where the formation of covalent bonds between organics and adatoms usually hamper the diffusion of molecules and their subsequent interactions with each other. However, the saturation of the dangling bonds at a semiconductor surface is known to make them inert and offers a unique way for the engineering of m…
Weak chord-arc curves and double-dome quasisymmetric spheres
2014
Let $\Omega$ be a planar Jordan domain and $\alpha>0$. We consider double-dome-like surfaces $\Sigma(\Omega,t^{\alpha})$ over $\overline{\Omega}$ where the height of the surface over any point $x\in\overline{\Omega}$ equals $\text{dist}(x,\partial\Omega)^{\alpha}$. We identify the necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of $\Omega$ and $\alpha$ so that these surfaces are quasisymmetric to $\mathbb{S}^2$ and we show that $\Sigma(\Omega,t^{\alpha})$ is quasisymmetric to the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ if and only if it is linearly locally connected and Ahlfors $2$-regular.
Nitric oxide increases the decay of matrix metalloproteinase 9 mRNA by inhibiting the expression of mRNA-stabilizing factor HuR.
2003
Dysregulation of extracellular matrix turnover is an important feature of many inflammatory processes. Rat renal mesangial cells express high levels of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) in response to inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 beta. We demonstrate that NO does strongly destabilize MMP-9 mRNA, since different luciferase reporter gene constructs containing the MMP-9 3' untranslated region (UTR) displayed significant reduced luciferase activity in response to the presence of NO. Moreover, by use of an in vitro degradation assay we found that the cytoplasmic fractions of NO-treated cells contained a higher capacity to degrade MMP-9 transcripts than those obtained from contro…
Involvement of KSRP in the post-transcriptional regulation of human iNOS expression–complex interplay of KSRP with TTP and HuR
2005
We purified the KH-type splicing regulatory protein (KSRP) as a protein interacting with the 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) of the human inducible nitric oxide (iNOS) mRNA. Immunodepletion of KSRP enhanced iNOS 3'-UTR RNA stability in in vitro-degradation assays. In DLD-1 cells overexpressing KSRP cytokine-induced iNOS expression was markedly reduced. In accordance, downregulation of KSRP expression increases iNOS expression by stabilizing iNOS mRNA. Co-immunoprecipitations showed interaction of KSRP with the exosome and tristetraprolin (TTP). To analyze the role of KSRP binding to the 3'-UTR we studied iNOS expression in DLD-1 cells overexpressing a non-binding mutant of KSRP. In these ce…
The 3'-UTR of the mRNA coding for the major protein kinase C substrate MARCKS contains a novel CU-rich element interacting with the mRNA stabilizing …
2003
The expression of the major protein kinase C substrate MARCKS (myristoylated alanine-rich C kinase substrate) is controlled by the stability of its mRNA. While the MARCKS mRNA is long living in quiescent fibroblasts (t1/2 = 14 h), its half-life time is drastically reduced (t1/2 = 2 h) in cells treated with phorbol esters to activate protein kinase C (PKC) or treated with growth factors. In a first step to study the underlying mechanism we identified both a cis-element on the MARCKS mRNA and the corresponding trans-acting factors. Fusing the complete 3'-UTR or specific regions of the 3'-UTR of the MARCKS gene to a luciferase reporter gene caused a drastic decrease in luciferase expression to…
Assessment of Energy and Economic Effectiveness of Photovoltaic Systems Operating in a Dense Urban Context
2013
A methodology that permits testing the level of integration of the photovoltaic technology in urban areas is presented. The percentage of coverage of the electricity demand of grid-connected photovoltaic systems installed on the roofs of buildings were investigated in a district of the city of Palermo (Sicily). After classifying roofs according to their shape, orientation and pitch by means of satellite images provided by Google Earth, the ratio of the productivity of the PV systems and the consumption of electricity of the households was analysed. The results of the energy assessment have been screened considering the economic feasibility of grid-connected photovoltaic systems: the energy …
