Spectroscopic and structural characterization of pure and FeCl3-containing tri-n-butyl phosphate

2014

The spectroscopic properties and liquid structure of pure tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and FeCl3/TBP solutions have been investigated by Uv–Vis and Raman spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction and conductometry. Uv–Vis and Raman spectra, supported by conductometric measurements, consistently indicate that the solubilized salt is present mostly as TBP n [FeCl3 − n ] n+ and FeCl4 − complex ions due to specific interaction with the TBP phosphate group. Thanks to this interaction, a high amount of salt (up to 13 % w/w) can be dissolved despite the relatively low dielectric constant of TBP. The X-ray diffractogram of pure TBP has been interpreted in terms of three main contributions which can be attri…

Microstructure and lateral diffusion in monolayers of polymerizable amphiphiles

1989

Lipid analogue amphiphilic molecules containing polymerizable units were investigated in monolayers at the air/water interface by using film balance measurements, fluorescence microscopy, and photobleaching techniques. The polymerizable groups (diene-, diyne-, and methacrylate units) were introduced into the hydrophobic alkyl chains or into the polar head of the amphiphilic molecules. In the case of the diene- and diyne-containing compounds the polymerizable units are incorporated into the hydrophobic alkyl chains, enabling them to form a two-dimensional network. Due to the free chain flexibility of the monomers the lateral mobility was comparable to that of saturated lipid analogues and de…

Hydrogen bonds in unpolar matrix — Comparison of complexation in polymeric and low molecular-weight systems

1991

By ene-reaction of 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione with double bonds, polar 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazolidine-3,5-dione (phenyl urazole) groups are introduced into unpolar matrices. Hydrogen-bond complexes are formed between two amide-like units. The temperature dependence of complex formation in dilute hydrocarbon medium is obtained from remperature-dependent IR spectra in the region of the C=O stretching vibration. Results obtained for a low molecular-weight model system are compared with modified polybutadienes, where the groups are attached statistically along the polymer backbone. The enthalpy and the entropy of complex formation (ΔH f =−28.6 kJ/mol; ΔS f =−52 J/mol K−1) obtained for the…

Computer simulation of macromolecular materials

1988

Computer simulation of model systems with Monte Carlo methods enables the detailed study of structure and thermodynamic properties of these systems and thus constitutes a link between analytic theory and experiment. Typical applications that are discussed include polymer blends, dynamics of local motions in polymer melts, and the adsorption of polymers on walls.

Synthesis and characterization of water-swellable?,?-polyasparthydrazide derivatives

1995

α, β-polyasparthydrazide (PAHy) was crosslinked by glutaraldehyde to form water-swellable materials possessing a three-dimensional molecular network. Different crosslinking degrees were prepared varying glutaraldehyde/PAHy ratio and samples containing 5-fluorouracil were obtained by incorporating the drug into the polymer networks during the crosslinking reaction. All samples were characterized by swelling tests, thermal, x-ray and SEM analysis. Their microstructure was observed through scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, for samples containing the anticancer drug,in vitro release studies were performed in pH 7.4 buffer solution.

Structural variations in amphiphiles: Discoidal multivalent cations

1986

Fourteen cationic multipolar amphiphiles have been synthesized with pyridinium or trimethylammonium head groups. The hydrophobic cores are planar ring systems (benzene or triphenylene) to which two, three, four, or six decylene or undecylene alkyl chains are attached by ester linkages. The hydrophilic head groups are bound to the outer ends of the alkyl chains.

A thermodynamic analysis on the coincidence of extrema conditions in the sorption equilibrium for ternary polymer systems

1993

Flory-Huggins theory of polymer solutions has been used to express the condition of extrema values in the total sorption, as well as the inversion point in the preferential adsorption parameters for termary polymer systems. Two approaches have been followed, the first considers the binary and ternary interaction parameters independent of polymer concentration and solvent composition. In the second one, this dependence has been introduced. Our attention is focused on the volume fraction of solvent mixture dependence of the above parameters, in order to confirm or not the coincidence between the extrema values and the inversion point. Several cosolvent and cononsolvent ternary polymer systems…

Prediction of maxima and minima in the curve of total sorption parameter in ternary polymer systems. Influence of ternary interaction parameter

1993

Flory-Huggins theory modified by Pouchly has been applied to predict maxima and minima in the curve of total sorption in ternary polymer systems formed by a polymer and two liquids. In this work, different diagrams based on experimental magnitudes easily obtained such as the difference in affinities of liquids, solvents and non solvents, and the solvent molar volume ratio. Total sorption parameter has been considered to be the decisive magnitude to define extrema conditions in both cosolvent and cononsolvent ternary polymer systems. The theoretical prediction is not altered by the inclusion of ternary interactions. Different examples of ternary systems dealing with vinyl polymers and polydi…

A comparative study between cosolvent and cononsolvent ternary polymer systems through the preferential adsorption coefficient

1993

Sorption equilibrium of polystyrene and poly (dimethyl siloxane) in mixed solvents has been monitored by means of the preferential adsorption coefficient experimentally determined from intensity light scattering measurements. The pairs of solvents used to dissolve each polymer sample have been selected for the purpose to perform cosolvent and cononsolvent ternary polymer systems. Flory-Huggins formalism including ternary interactions has been used to predict the sorption equilibrium for the cosolvent system and, for the first time, for cononsolvent ones. Moreover, the proportionality between binary and ternary interactions, recognized by Pouchly, is also corroborated for both ternary polyme…

Formation of Bridging Alkene and Conjugated Dialkenes Exclusively Generated from Alkynes on the [3,3‘-Co(1,2-C2B9H11)2]- Platform. The Unique Hydrobo…

2003

The unprecedented metal-mediated transformation of an alkyne into a B,B' bridging alkene is reported. Also, the unprecedented synthesis of a conjugated dialkene derivative of [3,3'-Co(1,2-C2B9H11)2]- generated only from an alkyne, contrary to the usual case where an alkyne and an alkene are needed, is described. This has been possible through the singular capacity of a B-H to produce hydroboration.
