Toward a model for students’ combinatorial thinking
2021
Abstract Combinatorics has many applications in different disciplines, however, only a few studies have explored students’ combinatorial thinking at the upper secondary and tertiary levels concurrently. The present research is a grounded theory study of eight Year 12 and five undergraduate students, who have participated in semi-structured interviews and responded to eight combinatorial tasks. Three types of combinatorial tasks were designed: combinatorial reasoning, evaluating, and problem-posing tasks. In the open coding phase of data analysis, seventy-one codes were identified which categorized into seven main categories at the axial coding phase. At the selective coding phase, five rela…
Critical alignment in inquiry-based practice in developing mathematics teaching
2013
Published version of an article in the journal: Educational Studies in Mathematics. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10649-013-9489-z This paper reports a case study from a mathematics teaching developmental research project. The theoretical foundation for the research comprises communities of inquiry and critical alignment, with which the developmental methodology has a particular synergy. This synergy is the main focus of the paper. The paper elaborates theoretical and methodological antecedents of the project and traces these through a case study of developments in the practices of one upper secondary school team and a group of university didacticians (mat…
LEADING SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS TO FACE THE DISCIPLINARY, EPISTEMOLOGICAL AND SOCIETAL CHALLENGES OF CLIMATE CHANGE: DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF MULTI-D…
The scientific community has been debating climate change (CC) for over two decades. In the light of certain arguments put forward by the aforesaid community, the EU has recommended a set of innovative reforms to science teaching, such as incorporating environmental issues into the scientific curriculum, thereby helping to make schools a place of civic education. However, despite these European recommendations, relatively little emphasis is still given to climate change within science curricula. The main goal of the research project described in this thesis is to study if, how and why the scientific contents related to CC could be reconstructed so as to integrate the many dimensions involve…
Educational dialogue among teachers experiencing different levels of self-efficacy
2021
This study examines the occurrence and quality of educational dialogue in the Grade 1 classrooms of teachers with low, moderate and high self-efficacy beliefs. Video recordings of 24 teachers were analysed based on episodes of educational dialogue and were categorised with respect to patterns of dialogic teaching. Teachers with low levels of self-efficacy conducted educational dialogue the least; they also used less teacher-initiated, high-quality dialogue compared with moderate and high self-efficacy teachers. Teachers with high self-efficacy utilised more child-initiated high-quality dialogue compared with the moderate self-efficacy teachers. The findings are important because they provid…
2014
Biological evolution still lacks representation in school, especially below high school level. In order to find new implications that could help achieve significant improvement in teaching evolution, twelve expert interviews with both renowned researchers and experienced science teachers were conducted. Results of the comparison between the mindsets of scientists and teachers yield the five recommendations that could significantly improve the teaching practices of biological evolution: (1) Evolution should be taught as early as possible and should be exposed as the central concept of biology. (2) Despite the large theoretical framing of biological evolution, many occasions occur for hands-o…
Supporting and constraining factors in the development of university teaching experienced by teachers
2017
Higher education calls for reform, but deeper knowledge about the prerequisites for teaching development and pedagogical change is missing. In this study, 51 university teachers’ experiences of supportive or constraining factors in teaching development were investigated in the context of Finland’s multidisciplinary network. The findings reveal that the supportive factors in teaching development arise from the nature of the development itself, i.e. from the teachers’ opportunities to act as active agents in an authentic development process. Furthermore, the circumstances of the development also play essential roles (both constraining and supportive) in teaching development. Such support, at …
3 - 4 gadus vecu bērnu sensorās attīstības veicināšana ar dabas materiāliem
2015

This research clarifies how a collaborative team teaching model (CTTM) can support both pre-service and in-service teachers’ professional development in using inquiry-based science teaching in primary schools. The data were collected via a questionnaire-based survey approach after inquiry projects implementation at public schools in four Finnish cities. In total, 98 pre-service teachers and 51 in-service class teachers were involved in the research. According to their experiences collaborative team teaching was seen as an adequate teaching approach in primary school science lessons. Both in-service and pre-service teachers experienced inquiry-based science teaching enthusiastically and rece…
A Phenomenological Study About the Effect of Covid-19 Pandemic on the Use of Teaching Resources in Mathematics
2023
In this contribution, we discuss phenomenological research related to a pilot study carried out by the Consortium of the MaTeK Horizon 2020 project during the 2020–21 academic year. The research aims to analyse the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the use of teaching resources in mathematics in five coun- tries. A questionnaire made of seven questions was administered to a data sample made of teachers of all grades. The answers coming from the questionnaire were quantitatively and qualitatively analysed. Closed-ended questions were analysed by using a clustering methodology called k-means. Open-ended questions were qualitatively analysed. The results show that almost all the teachers are…
