Towards Computer-based Exams in CS1
2017
Even though IDEs are often a central tool when learning to program in CS1, many teachers still lean on paper-based exams. In this study, we examine the “test mode effect” in CS1 exams using the Rainfall problem. The test mode was two-phased. Half of the participants started working on the problem with pen and paper, while the other half had access to an IDE. After submitting their solution, all students could rework their solution on an IDE. The experiment was repeated twice during subsequent course instances. The results were mixed. From the marking perspective, there was no statistically significant difference resulting from the mode. However, the students starting with the paper-based pa…
Innovators and innovated: Newspapers and the postdigital future beyond the “death of print”
2017
Along with other cultural organizations, newspapers, through waves of digital disruption, have become subject to a dominant narrative of crisis. But newspapers have long participated in change. A constructivist approach, qualified by consideration of media materiality, draws attention to diverse but essential processes of innovation around them. We see a contraflow of migration from digital to print, opening up a shared media space; bonding strategies are bringing multimedia to ink on paper, while bridging via boundary objects such as QR (Quick Response) codes are connecting the two. Among other initiatives, development of automation of news production and experiments with transparency are …
Let's talk business! : a task-based material package of public speaking and small talk in the BELF context
2012
Tästä johtuen olen maisterintutkielmassani koonnut opetusmateriaalipaketin, jonka keskiössä on ensinnäkin tulevien liike-elämän toimi…
An Edutainment Implementation in an English Vocational Training Class
2021
The Relationships between Pre-Service Primary Teachers’ Teaching and Instructing/Coaching Orientations, and Their Perceived Strengths in Teaching Phy…
2014
Abstract. This study explored if the orientations towards instructing/coaching in physical activities (PA) and teaching physical education (PE) affect the perceived strengths in teaching PE at the primary level (PSTPEs). The orientations were considered as socializing factors into teaching PE. In this study, the perceived strengths were divided into discipline - and pupil - focused strengths. Online questionnaire was used to collect the data from 386 first year pre - service primary teachers before their first PE course of formal teacher education, to expose the acculturative influences of the orientations. Cross tabulation and logistic regression were used to analyze the relationships. The…
Scaffolding through dialogic teaching in early school classrooms
2016
The present study examines what types of dialogic teaching patterns can be identified in the early school years, and how teachers scaffold children's participation and shared understanding through dialogic teaching. Thirty recorded lessons from preschool to Grade 2 in Finnish classrooms were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Two teacher-initiated and two child-initiated dialogic teaching patterns were identified. Teacher's scaffolding in teacher-initiated dialogues was characterised by high responsibility in maintaining the interactional flow and utilisation of diverse strategies. In the child-initiated dialogues, the teachers' scaffolding consisted of listening and inquiry, and …
Teaching foreign language to the elderly : teachers perceptions
2009
Väestön ikääntymisen myötä eläkeikäisten ihmisten rooli on noussut tärkeään asemaan myös vieraiden kielten oppimisessa ja opetuksessa. Ikääntyneitä oppijoita on kuitenkin tutkittu Suomessa vielä valitettavan vähän. Poikkeuksena mainittakoon Aino Jaatisen (2003) paljolti omaksi avukseen laatima tutkimus ikääntyneistä englannin oppijoista, jota on käytetty pohjakirjallisuutena myös tässä tutkielmassa. Tämän proseminaarityön päämääränä on ollut kartoittaa vieraiden kielten opettajien havaintoja iäkkäistä oppijoista sekä heidän mahdollisesti käyttämiä opetusmetodejaan. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin kyselylomakkeen avulla, johon vastasi kuusi opettajaa. Tutkimustulokset osoittivat, että opettajat …

Le « bon cours » et le « mauvais cours » : analyse descriptive et essai de typologie des conceptions de jeunes enseignants-chercheurs en France
2017
This empirical study is part of research into teachers’ conceptions of teaching but in a new context and with a new audience. It is based on a qualitative survey conducted by semi-directive interviews with 17 lecturers (in the job for three years at most and across a range of subject areas) about the notions of ‘good’ and ‘poor’ lessons. The analysis reveals (1) difficulties in defining what makes for a ‘good’ lesson and even more so a ‘poor’ lesson; (2) the narrow range of terms used and the fact that the terms characterize a ‘good’ lesson as both a process and an outcome; (3) the absence of conceptions in terms of academic subject areas, and (4) great difficulty in categorizing the concep…
School Detention in Finland : A Pilot Study
2017
Although detention is one of the most popular methods of punishment in schools, it is being met with increasing criticism as an educational intervention. Few studies have explored its use to date; therefore, the present pilot study was planned to survey the popularity of detention. By analyzing a representative sample of comprehensive school teachers (N = 2,276) in Finland at grade levels 1-9, it was found that 30% of Finnish school teachers regularly use this punishment. Differences in use were observed across gender, age, and teacher category. These results provide a baseline against which future follow-up studies can be compared. peerReviewed
