Reflectance-based surface saliency

In this paper, we propose an original methodology allowing the computation of the saliency maps for high dimensional RTI data (Reflectance Transformation Imaging). Unlike most of the classical methods, our approach aims at devising an intrinsic visual saliency of the surface, independent of the sensor (image) and the geometry of the scene (light-object-camera). From RTI data, we use the DMD (Discrete Modal Decomposition) technique for the angular reflectance reconstruction, which we extend by a new transformation on the modal basis enabling a rotation-invariant representation of reconstructed reflectances. A comparison of HDFS compact data formats: Avro versus Parquet

In this paper, file formats like Avro and Parquet are compared with text formats to evaluate the performance of the data queries. Different data query patterns have been evaluated. Cloudera’s open-source Apache Hadoop distribution CDH 5.4 has been chosen for the experiments presented in this article. The results show that compact data formats (Avro and Parquet) take up less storage space when compared with plain text data formats because of binary data format and compression advantage. Biochar is defined as charred organic matter applied to soil in a deliberate manner, with the intent to improve soil properties (Lehmann et al., 2009). Biomass-derived char can be used as energy carrier, as adsorber and as material for the improvement of soil properties. Carbonized organic matter can have different physical and chemical properties depending on the technology used for its production. El Liber philosophorum moralium antiquorum forma parte del corpus de literatura sapiencial hispánica que se enmarca dentro de las denominadas «rutas del saber» del siglo XIII. El Liber es la traducción latina de la obra castellana Bocados de oro (s. XIII), texto que, a su vez, es traducción de un original árabe de título Mokhtâr al-Hikam wa-mahasim al-kalim (Selección de sentencias y las más bellas palabras), que el sirio-egipcio Abu’l Wafa al-Mubassir ben Fatik (1019-1097) escribió en torno a los años 1048-1049. En el presente artículo, ofrecemos la primera edición crítica completa del capítulo dedicado a Solón de Atenas del Liber philosophorum.

Urban 3-D models for plannig of mobile telephony systems

This paper deals with an application of numerical cartography, carried out by means of digital photogrammetry techniques, aimed at the planning of mobile telephony cells. Particularly, urban 3-D vector models (wireframe), got by digital restitution and integrated by raster images referred to rectified buildings facades, were carried out in a sample area selected inside the Orleans Park, seat of the Palermo University. Then such models were processed by computer graphics techniques owing to the operations of rendering and animation. These 3-D representations could come in very useful for study and planning of mobile telephony networks in urban areas.

In this article I will scrutinize Screen (2002, by WARDRIP-FRUIN & al.), a literary work set and experienced in a CAVE Virtual Reality environment, especially from the perspective of its temporal aspects. There are obvious themes of remembering, forgetting and textually constructing the past in this work, but most notably, Screen emphasizes the temporality of the reading act itself. I will analyze this highly special work in relation to the remembered, read, and bodily experienced time, and thus, attempt to better understand both the notion of fictive time and the temporality of fiction. peerReviewed
