This study explores the relationship between civic and citizenship factors and the middle proficiency level of students’ civic knowledge in the Baltic countries: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The study uses large scale data from the IEA’s International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) 2016. According to ICCS 2016, 39% of students from the three Baltic countries and only 26% of students from the Nordic countries had a middle proficiency level of civic knowledge. Identifying Pathways to Computer Science : The Long-Term Impact of Short-Term Game Programming Outreach Interventions

Short-term outreach interventions are conducted to raise young students’ awareness of the computer science (CS) field. Typically, these interventions are targeted at K–12 students, attempting to encourage them to study CS in higher education. This study is based on a series of extra-curricular outreach events that introduced students to the discipline of computing, nurturing creative computational thinking through problem solving and game programming. Otto Bluh (1902–1981) was a professor of physics who maintained a lifelong interest in Mach and contributed actively to previous commemorations. Dozent and first assistant at the German University of Prague, he was forced into exile as a result of the German occupation and held research and academic positions in Birmingham (UK), and the universities of British Columbia (Canada) and Vanderbilt (USA). In view of recent international efforts to identify and measure the ability “critical thinking,” this paper attempts to trace and reconstruct the core meaning of this concept in the light of its conceptual history in the German terminology of educational philosophy and research. In doing so, it becomes evident that it is necessary to clarify the relationship between “critical thinking” and “education,” both understood as terms designating a mental state. Im Beitrag wird Gérard Granels "introduction“ zu seiner "traduction" von Heideggers "Was heißt Denken?" vorgestellt, die Ende der Fünfzigerjahre in Zusammenarbeit mit dem deutschen Aloys Becker entstand und 1959 erstmalig bei den Presses Universitaires de France erschien. Dieser sprachlich und gedanklich bemerkenswert dichte Übersetzungskommentar Granels ist im Hinblick auf die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Theorie und Praxis des Übersetzens, die als Frage nach der Möglichkeit einer Überwindung gestellt wird, umso aufschlussreicher, als bereits die heideggersche Vorlage wesentlich um den Zusammenhang von Denken und Übersetzen, Sprachmaterialität und Sinnschöpfung kreist.

A classroom with a blackboard and some rows of desks is obsolete in special education. Depending on the needs, some students may need more tactile and inspiring surroundings with various pedagogical accessories while others benefit from a simplified environment without unnecessary stimuli.
