In tali archivi possono infatti confluire dati morfologici, biom…

An operator view on alliances in politics

2015

We introduce the concept of an {\em operator decision making technique} and apply it to a concrete political problem: should a given political party form a coalition or not? We focus on the situation of three political parties, and divide the electorate into four groups: partisan supporters of each party and a group of undecided voters. We consider party-party interactions of two forms: shared or differing alliance attitudes. Our main results consist of time-dependent decision functions for each of the three parties, and their asymptotic values, i.e., their final decisions on whether or not to form a coalition.

La géopolitique du foncier : pouvoirs et échelles d’action

2018

When it comes to land management, successive reforms to territorial governancehave resulted in power games that have placed intercommunalauthorities in charge of coordination without any clearly defined institutionalhierarchy. The interviews conducted with actors in the territories studied(the Communauté de communes [joint local authorities] of the Vallée deChamonix Mont-Blanc, Pays du Grésivaudan and Massif du Vercors) and ouranalysis of the public policy tools they use highlight the change in scale thathas occurred in land management. We argue that the geopolitical stakes ofland have been elucidated with the constitution of dedicated engineering, which invites us to distinguish between the…

AnABlast: Re-searching for Protein-Coding Sequences in Genomic Regions

2019

AnABlast is a computational tool that highlights protein-coding regions within intergenic and intronic DNA sequences which escape detection by standard gene prediction algorithms. DNA sequences with small protein-coding genes or exons, complex intron-containing genes, or degenerated DNA fragments are efficiently targeted by AnABlast. Furthermore, this algorithm is particularly useful in detecting protein-coding sequences with nonsignificant homologs to sequences in databases. AnABlast can be executed online at http://www.bioinfocabd.upo.es/anablast/ .

Redzes asuma attālinātās pārbaudes iespēju novērtēšana

2021

2017

The perception of sounds of a foreign tongue influences the quality of comprehension and speaking in the language, as well as learning how to read and write properly. The differentiation and identification of sounds enables the development of aural-verbal memory, subsequently associating particular sound patterns with particular meanings. In other words, a developed perception of sounds ensures an efficient communication in a foreign language. Since learners perceive foreign sounds with varied proficiency, the teacher should recognize the difficulties and undertake remedial measures to facilitate learning progress. This article aims to present an educational tool, currently in development, …

Mixed e-assessment: An application of the studentgenerated question technique

2010

This paper presents the experiment of a mixed summative-formative evaluation in an asynchronous distance higher education context. In the experiment, performed in the distance course of Total Quality Management, Industrial Engineering, University of Guadalajara (Mexico), students are guided to formultate questions on specific topics. Studentgenerated questions are evaluated through an ad-hoc quantitative tool, specifically designed for the purpose: the four-criterion Observation Matrix. The experiment shows: (1) that it is possible to improve the Higher Education evaluation process and formalise students' skill in a more thoroughly way than with traditional evaluation; (2) how the student-e…

Paradigm of tunable clustering using Binarization of Consensus Partition Matrices (Bi-CoPaM) for gene discovery

2013

This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited. Clustering analysis has a growing role in the study of co-expressed genes for gene discovery. Conventional binary and fuzzy clustering do not embrace the biological reality that some genes may be irrelevant for a problem and not be assigned to a cluster, while other genes may participate in several biological functions and should simultaneously belong to multiple clusters. Also, these algorithms cannot generate tight cluster…

Conquer the Net: An educational computer game to learn the basic configuration of networking components

2009

Advanced networking equipment is relatively expensive and student access to it is usually limited to scheduled times at computer laboratories within the university premises. Hence, it is important to make the most effective use of the time assigned and minimize the time that students spend in activities which can be performed outside the laboratory sessions. Familiarizing with the basic configuration commands is one such activity. We have developed a computer game to allow students to learn these in a motivating and pleasant environment. This game has been designed so that rules are easily learned and both cooperative and competitive learning are promoted. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Com…

Simulation as a game design tool

2009

In this paper we suggest using gameplay simulations on a logical event level as a design tool already in the early stages of the development process. The approach is centred on abstracting all unnecessary details of the gameplay to produce a highly simplified model of the game system. Compared to other kinds of intermediate design representations, such as sketches and prototypes, the simulations can reveal problems and opportunities in the longer term dynamics of possible gameplay. As an example we describe an implementation of a simulation model for the game Tower Bloxx using a simulation software package called DisCo.
